Marlins' Connor Norby to miss 6-to-8 weeks after left wrist surgery
The procedure on Wednesday was to repair a broke hamate bone in his left wrist and was done by hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan in Phoenix, the team said Friday. The recovery timeline is six to eight weeks.
Norby felt wrist soreness during Miami's road series at Baltimore last week and was initially listed with wrist inflammation.
The Marlins acquired Norby from Baltimore last summer in the trade that also landed first-time All Star Kyle Stowers in Miami.
While Norby's tenure with the Marlins started strong — he hit .247 with a .315 on-base percentage while hitting seven homers in 36 games — his performance had been uneven this year, with a .241 average and .289 on-base percentage, six home runs and 26 RBI in 72 games. He was sidelined the first two months of the season with an oblique injury.
'Speaking with Connor in Baltimore, he felt like things were starting to come around,' manager Clayton McCullough said. 'He felt better about himself in the box. He felt like he was making some real strides defensively, and then not knowing at the time what the length of it was going to be and what it was. But he was sore. I think he was just more disappointed, if he was going to have to miss some time, he felt right now he was trending.'
The Marlins will turn to Graham Pauley and Javier Sanoja in Norby's absence. Pauley has played 23 games at third base this season. Sanoja has played nine.
Pauley got the start at third on Friday against Kansas City as Miami began the second half of the season with a six-game homestand.

'For this reason, I have informed the NFLPA Executive Committee that I am stepping down as Executive Director of the NFLPA and Chairman of the Board of NFL Players effective immediately. I hope this will allow the NFLPA to maintain its focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season.' When contacted by CNN, the NFLPA declined to comment. CNN has also reached out to Howell Jr., through the union. According to Reuters, which cited ESPN, receipts from a trip taken by Howell in November 2023 showed that the NFLPA was billed for a car service and other costs by Tootsie's Cabaret in Miami, which claims to be the largest strip club in the world. Citing ESPN, Reuters also reported that a second strip club bill was also reviewed by the NFLPA's lawyers, relating to a reported trip in February during the NFLPA summit and itemizing US$2,426 in charges, which included cash withdrawals from a club ATM ranging between $200 and $525. Howell reportedly earned between $3.5 million and $4 million in his role with the NFLPA. That was not the only controversy which Howell has become embroiled in during the last two weeks. Citing ESPN, Reuters reported that alongside his commitments to the NFLPA, Howell also held a part-time consultancy role with The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm that the NFL reportedly approved to pursue minority ownership in NFL franchises. This has been viewed by many as a serious conflict of interest. On top of that, Reuters – citing ESPN – also reported that Howell had decided to keep NFL players in the dark over an arbitration ruling on suspected collusion between team owners. Amid concerns that owners were coming together to reduce the growth of quarterback contracts, arbitrator Christopher Droney ruled there was not sufficient evidence to support the claims, per Reuters. However, he added that 'by a clear preponderance of the evidence,' the NFL's general counsel, along with commissioner Roger Goodell, did encourage owners to restrict guaranteed money in player contracts, the agency reported. According to reports, Howell and the NFLPA had a confidentiality agreement with the NFL designed to stop the full report from leaking. Although Howell did brief players on the matter, he did not give them copies of the report, according to Reuters, which cited ESPN. 'I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish at the NFLPA over the past two years,' Howell added in his statement. 'I will be rooting for the players from the sidelines as loud as ever, and I know the NFLPA will continue to ensure that players remain firmly at the center of football's future.' Scottie Scheffler in the lead at the British Open on key day of movement at Royal Portrush
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — Scottie Scheffler was quick to point out the British Open was only at the halfway point at Royal Portrush. Considering the world's No. 1 player was in the lead, it felt like a sprint Saturday for so many players to catch up. Rory McIlroy fell seven shots off the lead. He carried the hopes of his home country, and spectators could be heard from a half-mile away when McIlroy holed a birdie putt from 35 feet across the green on the first hole. Scheffler, coming off a 64 for his lowest score in a major, had a one-shot lead over former U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick. Former British Open champion Brian Harman and Li Haotong of China were two shots behind. Corey Conners of Canada made the cut on the number — 1-over par — and then shot 66 to improve his position drastically. John Parry of England had the first hole-in-one of the championship on the 13th hole. Bryson DeChambeau had a 13-shot improvement — a 78 on Thursday, a 65 on Friday — to also make the cut with no room to spare. He shot 68 and was still eight behind before Scheffler even teed off. At stake for Scheffler is the third leg of the career Grand Slam, the feat McIlroy achieved earlier this year by winning the Masters.
