Farmer's son tops ISC exam in Patna with 99.5%, plans career in law

, he has achieved 99.5% in arts stream with 100 in history, legal studies and political science, besides just two marks short in English. He has also cleared Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) with an All India Rank 145. In a conversation with TOI's Faryal Rumi, Utkarsh shares his study plan and the challenges he faced during board preparations. Excerpts:
How do you feel about your result?
I aimed around 99%, but I was thinking I might get 97% or 96%. However, 99.5% was beyond my expectations. So, I was surprised. We were called to the school to see our results. Everyone was so happy. They started hugging me.
What challenges did you face during preparations?

The biggest challenge was that I also appeared for CLAT-2025. After Aug 2024, I completely shifted my focus on CLAT preparation. At that time, I couldn't give any time to my board examinations, but my school was supportive. After I took the CLAT on Dec 1 last year, I started preparing for my school examination. Managing both was difficult at that time.
How was your CLAT result?
I got an All India Rank of 145 and an EWS category rank of 7.
So you must be planning a career in law?
Yes, I appeared for CLAT, and I will opt for law. The specific field I will practise in is not confirmed yet. My father has a degree in law, but he never practised. So, I will fulfil his as well as my dream of becoming a lawyer.
What was your strategy to prepare for the subjects that were challenging for you?
Legal studies were quite difficult because not many books are available for this subject. Some notes were provided by our teacher, and the rest were given by my coaching institute. I also watched online videos and prepared notes.
Your parents must be proud?
My father is very happy. He started posting about it on his status and other social media platforms. Nobody was expecting such a good result.
Tell me about your family.
My father is a farmer in Naubatpur, Patna. My mother passed away when I was only four years old. My elder brother, Marut Priyadarshi, did his graduation from ISSER, Bhopal, and is now working in a start-up.
Can you share some tips for students deciding streams for higher studies?
Please don't just listen to your peers. Do what you feel like. You must enjoy what you are studying. I got 97% in Class X, so people around me were suggesting I take science in plus II, but I was very sure from the beginning that I wanted to take arts because that's what I love studying.

Kozhikode/Kochi: A major fire broke out on board a Singapore-flagged vessel, MV Wan Hai 503, after a container explosion 44 nautical miles off the Azhikkal coast in Kannur on Monday, barely two weeks after a container ship sank off Thottappilly, Alappuzha. Eighteen crew members were rescued, while four are missing. The vessel, which departed from the port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 22 crew onboard on Friday, was estimated to reach the Nhava Sheva Port, Mumbai, on Tuesday. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) received a distress alert about the explosion and fire in one of its containers around 9.30am. "Of the 18 rescued crew, one is reported to have sustained serious injuries. Four crew members, including two Taiwanese, one Indonesian and one Myanmarese, are missing from the time of the explosion," a statement said. As per the cargo manifest of the ship accessed by TOI, the vessel carries "dangerous" cargo as per IMO (International Maritime Organisation) classification in as many as 157 containers. As of 12.40 pm, the resulting fire spread to other containers, and the crew abandoned the vessel in life rafts. INS Surat, diverted by the Indian Navy, rescued 18 survivors and took them to Mangalore port for disembarkation and further procedures by evening. The incident occurred around 9.20am, around 88 nautical miles off Beypore and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi. An official statement said preliminary reports suggested that 1,015 containers have fallen overboard. The crew members included eight Chinese, six Taiwanese, five Myanmarese and three Indonesian nationals. Besides two Dornier aircraft equipped with life rafts for aerial surveillance and situational assessment, the ICG has mobilised five ships, including specialised firefighting and pollution response vessels, to the incident site. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, has activated the International Safety Net (ISN), prompting nearby merchant vessels MV Ambra and MV One Marvel to assist in the rescue effort. The distress alert was initially relayed by MV Cape Valencia to MRCC Mumbai. The vessel continues to emit dense smoke, and the onboard fire poses a risk of further explosions and structural failure. Maritime traffic in the area has been advised to maintain a safe distance from the vessel. The Flag Administration of Singapore has also been formally notified. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, has instructed the ship's owners to immediately engage qualified salvors and firefighting experts. They have also been instructed to provide two-hourly updates until the situation is stabilised, a statement said. According to ICG, the vessel was adrift as of Monday evening, and firefighting efforts were ongoing. The details of the cargo onboard are being ascertained to determine the nature of the fire and the potential risks involved during firefighting operations. Efforts will also be undertaken to deter the vessel from closing in on the coast, it said.

Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Monday inspected the ongoing work to revive the old stream of Ganga river from Ghansurpur Ghat to Dadour Ghat under Bakhtiyarpur block in Patna district. He asked the officials to complete the old stream revival work before the arrival of monsoon this year. During the inspection, principal secretary of the water resources department, Santosh Kumar Mall, provided detailed information about the progress and current status of the work to the CM. The CM gave several necessary instructions to the officials. He asked the officials to speed up the work to ensure its completion before the monsoon. "Once the development work around the Sirhi Ghat and its vicinity is completed, it will provide significant convenience to visitors," Nitish said. Under this project, a total length of 4,420 metres is being dredged from the village of Ghansurpur to Dadour in Bakhtiyarpur block of Patna district to revive the old and dying course of the Ganga river. The administrative approval for this project is Rs 3427.80 lakh. Kozhikode: Singapore-flagged container ship Wan Hai 503, which caught fire 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal coast and is adrift, has 157 containers with dangerous cargo listed by International Maritime Organization (IMO). The cargo includes flammable materials, spontaneously combustible substances, and toxic chemicals like pesticides. This raises serious concerns about environmental damage in the Arabian Sea. The cargo manifest, accessed by TOI, showed that the ship has flammable solids (IMO class 4.1) in 20 containers. These include extremely flammable nitrocellulose with alcohol (at least 25% alcohol by mass and up to 12.6% nitrogen by dry mass) in two containers, naphthalene (crude or refined) in 12 containers, solids with flammable liquid in one container and paraformaldehyde in four containers. More importantly, the ship is carrying over 4,900kg of spontaneously combustible (IMO class 4.2) organometallic substance. This pyrophoric material, which can ignite on contact with air and reacts with water, is stored in one container in five portable tanks. These include 800 drums of bipyridylium pesticide weighing 1,83,200 kg used for weed and pest control, 132 drums of highly toxic and corrosive ethyl chloroformate weighing 27,786 kg in one container, and many other toxic chemicals. Other toxic substances on board include dimethyl sulphate and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The ship has around 50 containers with flammable liquids (IMO class 3). These include ethanol, paint, turpentine, printing ink, ethyl methyl ketone (an industrial solvent), and other materials. A flammable liquid (class 3) is any liquid with a flash point of 60.5°C or less or a liquid heated and transported at or above its flash point in bulk packaging. The ship also carries environmentally-hazardous substances, including benzophenone, trichlorobenzene, 167 boxes of lithium batteries and many others. Spontaneously combustible and highly flammable substances have blocked other vessels from approaching Wan Hai 503 and put out its fire. Shipping experts say the fire's high heat can weaken the stacked containers, causing them to collapse like a pancake and topple. Reports say many containers have already fallen into the sea. Azhikkal port officer Arun Kumar PK confirmed the ship is carrying dangerous cargo in four IMDG classes: 3, 4.1, 4.2, and 6.1.
