Thrissur Pooram, Kerala's grand festival begins with devotees thronging temple town's Thekkinkadu Maidan
The Pooram, known as the mother of all 'Poorams', officially kicked off on the night of May 5 as Neythalakavilamma made her majestic entry, escorted with devotion and ceremony, opening the Thekke Gopura Nada of the Sree Vadakkumnathan Temple.
Each deity participating in Thrissur Pooram has a distinct role and responsibility. Neythalakavilamma's duty is to prepare the way for Kanimangalam Shasta's early morning arrival on Pooram day, symbolically opening the South Gopuram for his entry.
Processions of deities from the 10 temples in and around Thrissur converge at the Vadukkumnathan Temple to pay obeisance to Lord Shiva.
The festival, which is celebrated on the day of 'Pooram' as per the Malayalam calendar month of Medam, is popularly known for its parading of elephants, Panchavadyam (percussion ensemble), and mega display of fireworks.
The festival attracts huge crowds from across Kerala and other states.
On the Pooram day, the festivities begin with the ceremonial entrance of 'Kanimangalam Sastha through the southern gopuram, and it is followed by the arrival of Panamukkampilly Sathavu, Chembookavu Karthiayani Devi, Karamukku Karthiyani Devi, Choorakkottukavu Durga Devi, Ayyanthole Karthiayani Devi, and Naithalakavu Bhagavathi.
Fireworks conducted as part of the celebration is one of the many attractions of the festivity. Though the Pooram happens in the summer month, people brave the scorching heat to be part of the celebration.

It will be in your house and you will be alone', revealed in messages on the show. Kiesha's aunt Rachel said: 'When we found she had been murdered I thought to myself this is Joe Bloggs, this is his amigos.' However, the show noted that Grant carried out the killing to steal the £770 that she had stashed in a wardrobe - gathered to pay Joe Bloggs. CCTV showed Grant, who claimed he was in bed, on the night in which Keisha died and not the Two Amigos. More footage showed him flaunting a large amount of money during the time he was struggling to pay his rent. Although a murder weapon was never recovered, CCTV showed Grant dumping something in a bin outside a shop. Police arrested Grant at his work after a bloody handprint in Kiesha's home was identified as his. Detective Inspector William Grant said: 'He would have known that he was starting to become of significant interest to the police. "This is a man that's committed a violent murder in a relatively low crime area of Scotland, We can't allow him to be walking the streets." Grant was convicted in May and jailed for 24 years. Kiesha's aunt Rachel said: 'I wish he had never been in Elgin and I wish he had never met Kiesha. 'I can't believe he killed her for the money, It's a disgusting thing to do. "If he asked her for money she would have given it to him. It was just that he knew she had that money and he wanted it to feed his habit. 'He's in jail now but we've got to carry on. Meghan Markle has shared a first look at the second series of her Netflix show With Love, Meghan. The first-look trailer for the second series of Meghan Markle's lifestyle programme With Love, Meghan has been released - and it's due to broadcast in just days. The preview reveals Meghan accompanied by various celebrity guests for the programme's second run, which faced harsh criticism from reviewers previously. Posting the teaser on Instagram, the Duchess of Sussex wrote alongside the trailer: "The best moments are made to be shared. With Love, Meghan returns August 26th on @netflix." In the brief clip, Queer Eye favourite Tan France and Chrissy Teigen feature as visitors to Meghan's home. The footage displayed Meghan preparing meals and baking alongside her famous pals, reports the Mirror. "I love the idea of just spending time together... and finding new ways to show people you care. There are easy ways to show up, lovingly." The trailer emerges just hours after news broke that Meghan alongside spouse Prince Harry have secured a fresh "multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects" with Netflix. With Love, Meghan's debut series launched in March but struggled to enter the top 300 most-viewed programmes on the streaming service during the opening half of 2025. Throughout the eight-episode inaugural season, the former Suits star offers entertaining advice and prepares dishes with celebrity companions including The Office favourite Mindy Kaling, to whom Meghan mentions she now uses the surname Sussex. Ayr United in mourning as tributes paid to iconic defender Rikki Fleming
Former teammates have led tributes to one of the stalwarts of Ally MacLeod's famous side. Ayr United are mourning the loss of another great with the death of iconic defender Rikki Fleming at the age of 78. Ice cool Rikki, who began his career with Rangers, spent 10 years at Somerset Park after being signed by Ally MacLeod from Kilwinning Rangers in November 1968. He went on to make more than 350 appearances as an Honest Man and was part of the team widely acknowledged as one of Ayr's greatest ever: Stewart, Malone, Murphy, Fleming, Quinn, Mitchell, Young, Ferguson, Ingram, McCulloch, Rough. Rikki was a standout in the team which beat Rangers 2-1 in September 1969 before a record crowd of 25,225, a game which is etched in the memory of those privileged to be there. In March 1974, he played for the Scottish League against the Football League at Maine Road. He won the Ayr Supporters' Association player of the year award that season for the second time and was revered as a fans' favourite. Rikki played a key part as Ayr qualified for the inaugural Premier Division in 1975 where they held their own for three seasons. He was sold to Hibs for £10,000 in 1978 for a £10,000 transfer fee before finishing his senior career with Berwick Rangers. Former skipper and assistant manager Davie Wells recalled: 'Rikki was totally dedicated, always unflappable and was so good in the air. "He was a wonderful player and used to share a few laughs with George 'Dandy' McLean, who like him had played for Rangers before joining Ayr.' Striker Neil Hood was a close pal of Rikki both on and off the park, spending foreign holidays with him when they were Somerset teammates. He said: 'He was a super guy and a fantastic footballer. It was somewhat ironic that he went on to become a taxi server because when he was at Ayr he couldn't drive and relied on public transport and teammates for lifts. 'We used to go to Glasgow dance halls together and his famous chat-up line was always the same. I'm Rikki, ex-Rangers and now a superstar with Ayr United.' Former Ayrshire Post Sports Editor Mike Wilson reckons Rikki was one of the classiest players to pull on the black and white. He said: 'Rikki was a star in a golden era for Ayr in the late 60s and 70s under Ally MacLeod who led them into the Premier Division. 'He formed a formidable partnership with the hard as nails Stan Quinn and they were the perfect foil for each other. Rikki was always unruffled no matter the opponent, a real class act who served the club well for 10 years.' Rikki and teammate Dick Malone were inducted into the Ayr Hall of Fame in 2010. Rikki, who had progressed dementia, had spent the last six months of his life in a care home before passing away.
