Miami GP suffers major ratings dip minus NBA lead-in

The Miami Grand Prix suffered a major drop in television audience for the fourth edition of the South Florida event on Sunday.
The race won by McLaren's Oscar Piastri drew an average of 2.17 million viewers on ABC, according to Nielsen ratings. That represented around a 30 percent drop from last year's race, which set a record for Formula 1 ratings on United States television with an average audience of 3.07 million.
The silver lining is that Sunday's numbers were still up 7 percent from the 2023 Miami GP, and came without a live sporting event on ABC leading into the race. The 2024 Miami GP aired right after Game 7 of a first-round playoff series.
However, this year's Miami GP was seen as an important litmus test with ESPN evaluating whether it intends to pursue an extension of its F1 media rights deal that expires at the end of this season. Two U.S.-based races remain on the schedule with a stop in Austin in October and the third year of the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November.
Piastri's win on Sunday, with teammate Lando Norris taking second place, peaked with 2.4 million viewers and rated as the third most-watched F1 race on U.S. television. The top four spots are all occupied by the Miami GP, which last week signed a 10-year extension with F1 through the 2041 season.

Stewards reject Red Bull protest of Russell's win
MONTREAL: Formula One stewards rejected a Red Bull protest of George Russell's Canadian Grand Prix victory for Mercedes on Sunday. The stewards said in a lengthy statement issued five and a half hours after the end of the race that the protest was not founded. Red Bull, who forfeited their deposit, had Max Verstappen finish second. They had argued Russell breached the rules by driving erratically when the safety car was deployed in the final laps of the race and also showed unsportsmanlike conduct. Stewards dismissed the allegations. While Russell and Verstappen are not friends and have clashed on the track, notably in Spain two weeks ago when Red Bull's four-times world champion was heavily punished, Horner said it was not personal. Red Bull have however protested twice in the space of five races now, both times against Russell. In Miami in May they protested the Briton's third place, arguing the driver had failed to slow when yellow flags were waved during a virtual safety car period. Verstappen was fourth that time. Stewards also rejected that protest.

MONTREAL, June 16 — Championship leader Oscar Piastri accepted McLaren team-mate Lando Norris's apologies on Sunday after the Briton misjudged a passing move and crashed into him in the closing laps of the Canadian Grand Prix. The collision on lap 67 of the 70-lap race came when Norris attempted to overtake his Australian team-mate and title rival on the straight, but attacked a diminishing space and hit the back of Piastri's car, demolishing his own front wing. Piastri continued and finished fourth while Norris retired. Mercedes' George Russell won the race from pole ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull with teenage rookie Kimi Antonelli third in the second Mercedes to become the third youngest driver to take an F1 podium position. It was Russell's first win this season and made him only the fourth different winner this year along with the two McLaren men and Verstappen. Piastri's fourth place finish left him frustrated and disappointed as McLaren failed to land a podium finish for the first time this year in the 10th race of the 24-race season. But he boosted his lead in the drivers' title race to 22 points with 198 ahead of Norris and Verstappen, who is third on 155. Russell is fourth on 136. 'It's not ideal for anyone,' said Piastri. 'I've not actually seen the incident, so I don't know exactly what happened, but if Lando has taken full responsibility then that's how it goes I guess. 'It was just a bit of a tricky race in general and not an ideal finish.' On his duel with Norris, he added: 'It was fair, but he made quite a large move into Turn 10, I held my own into the chicane. It was definitely a tough battle, but a clean one up until that point. 'I've not seen the incident, but I don't think there was any bad intentions involved. I think it was just unfortunate really. 'I will go and have a look – we're both fighting for a world championship and I'm very thankful to the team that they allow us to race. I don't expect this to change anything in terms of that.' 'I think our pace was OK, but not the race I expected with the bad start and that kind of cemented us in fourth and I don't think we had enough of an advantage to do anything else.' 'For me, this weekend wasn't good enough and it's still far too early to think that that is an comfortable advantage or anything like that. There's a long way to go in the season and we've got to try and improve on the whole.' Norris did not finish and accepted the blame for the accident. Red Bull protest against Russell's Canada win
MONTREAL: Formula One stewards summoned George Russell and Max Verstappen to a post-race hearing at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday following a Red Bull protest against the winning Mercedes driver. The stewards did not give further details but Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told reporters the protest related to two incidents when the safety car was deployed in the final laps of the race. He said the first item related to "erratic driving behind the safety car. George very heavily braked, obviously looking in his mirror for Max" and the second was "very clearly the distance that was left behind the safety car." Horner said the latter exceeded the permitted distance. Verstappen finished second in the race, ending a run of three successive wins at the Montreal circuit. "It's within our right to protest that so we've lodged the protest, it's with the stewards now and we'll see what they say," said Horner.
