Jefferies upgrades Street's most hated stocks, says Q1 earnings not too bad

Time of India3 days ago
With the Nifty IT index now in a deep bear market, down 25% from its peak, global brokerage firm
Jefferies
has upgraded Dalal Street's worst-performing sector to 'Neutral'. It also noted that the Q1 earnings season hasn't been all that bad for India Inc.
'While we remain concerned about the long-term stock performance of IT companies given the single-digit EPS growth outlook, we believe conditions are ripe for a near-term tactical bounce, supported by attractive valuations relative to the Nifty, free cash flow, and under-ownership,' said Mahesh Nandurkar, analyst at Jefferies. 'This should be similar to the recent bounce seen in the FMCG sector.'

The brokerage has added weight to Infosys in its model portfolio by removing BPCL (amid rising crude oil prices) and Welspun (due to concerns over US trade tariffs).
IT stocks
have been under pressure due to weak discretionary spending by clients, macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties, and AI-driven disruption that threatens traditional business models.
IT bellwether TCS is down 27% so far this calendar year, while peers HCL Tech, Infosys, and Wipro have each lost at least 20% in value. Even midcap IT names like Persistent Systems are down 22%.

Q1 earnings review
Jefferies' mid-quarter earnings review shows that downgrades (50%) outpaced earnings upgrades (40%) for FY26estimates across 113 companies in its coverage universe.
'Downgrades have averaged 57% over the past three quarters. The 'beat' ratio remained flat quarter-on-quarter at 44%. Earnings estimates for FY26 for MSCI India have been trimmed by 1.7% during the results season, and 8% earnings growth is now expected. Banks were the key reason for the downgrade,' said Jefferies analyst Mahesh Nandurkar.
On IT and banks, Nandurkar said Q1 numbers were mixed, while consumer staples showed sequential volume improvement, although EBITDA growth remained weak due to elevated input costs.
Meanwhile, Motilal Oswal noted that earnings for the 38 Nifty companies that have reported so far grew 7.5% YoY, beating estimates of 5.7% YoY. The upside was led by
RIL
,
HDFC Bank
,
ICICI Bank
,
JSW Steel
, Bajaj Finance, L&T, and M&M.
'These seven companies contributed 100% to the incremental YoY earnings growth,' the brokerage said. 'Conversely,
Coal India
, IndusInd Bank, HCL Tech,
Kotak Mahindra Bank
, Axis Bank, and Eicher Motors dragged Nifty earnings lower. Of the 38 companies, seven reported below-estimate profits, fourteen beat expectations, and seventeen were in line.'
However, Nifty EPS for FY26 has been cut by 1.1% to Rs 1,110. FY27 EPS estimates have also been trimmed by 0.8% to Rs 1,297 (from Rs 1,308), led by earnings cuts in Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, Power Grid Corp, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, the note added.

Nifty futures fall, oil rises after US tariffs on India over Russian energy

The Nifty futures fell and crude prices rose after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on goods from India over its purchase of Russian energy. The Gift Nifty futures declined up to 0.9 per cent before recovering and were trading at 24,535 — down 95.5 points or 0.39 per cent — as of 8:45 pm. Oil prices climbed, with Brent crude trading at $69.2, up 0.85 per cent. The benchmark Nifty ended Wednesday's session at 24,574, down 75 points or 0.3 per cent. The latest tariffs are in addition to the 25 per cent tariffs already in place. 'The recovery of Gift Nifty indicates that the markets are likely to take Trump's announcement in their stride and are not shocked. Additional tariffs are more of a theatre and negotiation tool than an actual imposition,' said UR Bhat, co-founder, Alphaniti Fintech. 'We expect the markets to fall by 1–2 per cent in a knee-jerk reaction, but most would expect a resolution. Impact on GDP will be around 30–40 basis points if these tariffs are sustained for a year,' said Dhiraj Relli, managing director and chief executive officer, HDFC Securities. Trump on Tuesday had accused India of fuelling Russia's war machine. The US President had earlier escalated trade tensions by unilaterally imposing a 25 per cent tariff after months of negotiations. The additional tariffs come ahead of an August 8 deadline that Trump gave Russia to reach a truce with Ukraine. He has also threatened secondary tariffs on buyers of Russian energy.

Rupee recovers from record low level, ends 16 paise higher at 87.72 against US dollar

Mumbai, The rupee rebounded from record low level and closed 16 paise higher at 87.72 against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by a volatile greenback and the Reserve Bank's decision to hold interest rate steady. However, increasing crude oil prices, negative domestic equity markets, and uncertainties around the US tariff on India restricted gains in the local unit, according to forex traders. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 87.72 and moved in a range of 87.63-87.80 during the day before settling at 87.72, up 16 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee lost 22 paise to close at a fresh all-time low of 87.88 against the US dollar. Its previous lowest closing level of 87.80 was recorded on July 30. The unit also revisited its lowest-ever intra-day level of 87.95 against the dollar, seen previously on February 10 this year. After three successive interest rate cuts, the Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday decided to keep policy rate unchanged at 5.5 per cent and retained the neutral stance, amid concerns over tariff uncertainties. Announcing the third bi-monthly monetary policy of the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the growth rate projection for FY26 has been retained at 6.5 per cent. "The rupee was in the narrow range with RBI protecting one end and FPIs buying for their dollar outflows, along with oil companies, before the due date of US secondary sanctions on Russia day after tomorrow ," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "We wait for the penal tariffs US applies on India for purchasing oil from Russia as the rupee traverses through a narrow path today with something positive in the mind. For tomorrow, we expect rupee in the range of 87.25/88.00," he said. Meanwhile, Brent crude prices rose 1.45 per cent to USD 68.62 per barrel in futures trade. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was up marginally 0.01 per cent to 98.79 after falling overnight. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 166.26 points to settle at 80,543.99, while the Nifty went down 75.35 points to close at 24,574.20. Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth ₹ 4,999.10 crore on a net basis on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
