Shelter of solidarity: Activists join hands to honour their own on his 60th birthday

Vijayapura: It is a universal trend to publish a congratulatory book on notable personalities when they attain the ages of 60, 75, or other significant years. However, Anil Hosamani, a dedicated activist who lived in a shed-like structure and runs a printing press to spread the thoughts of Ambedkar, Basavanna, and Gandhiji, received a unique felicitation on his 60th birthday on Sunday.
His fellow activists and like-minded people moved his belongings to a temporary shed - to construct a permanent house.
Basavaraj Sulibhavi of Ladai Prakashana told TOI that they decided to construct a house at a cost of Rs 18 lakh through crowdfunding. "His house is already named 'Samvidhana Mane' (Constitution House), as he always fought to uphold constitutional values in society. We are firm on not accepting any contribution either from politicians or from the govt.
Many activists are lending help in the form of cement, bricks, jelly stones, sand, iron, doors, windows, fans, and other construction materials and equipment.
Many like-minded organisations and fora are extending their support for this cause," he explained.
Construction started with the recital of Ambedkar's thoughts and Basavanna's vachanas at Ibrahimpur railway gate, followed by a seminar on Anil Hosamani's contributions, at Ambedkar Bhavan in Vijayapura.

Mallikarjun Heggalagi, a senior writer, noted that constructing a house for an activist and writer is a rare occurrence in the state. His father, Chandrashekhar Hosamani, resigned from his govt job, influenced by Ambedkar's thoughts and started a daily.
Following him, Anil met Savita, Ambedkar's second wife, in 1983 in Vijayapura. Savita said, "fight against injustice and don't lose hope," and Anil followed her words throughout his life. He runs 'Bahujana Nayaka' daily to spread Ambedkar's ideology from his printing press, which is named after Ambedkar," he said.
Veteran journalist Sanathkumar Belagali noted that normally activists' wards turn away from activism. "However, Anil is an exception, continuing his father's legacy. He is fortunate that his son Sangharsh is also following the same line of activism. He has also translated a book 'Ambedkar Sahavasadalli' from Marathi, which received an award from the Karnataka Sahitya Academy. However, Hosamani has never bothered about his living.

Set up multi-sectoral team for natural disasters, says Amit Shah
Amit Shah NEW DELHI: In view of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters and the need to mitigate losses, Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday directed the formation of a multi-sectoral central team. Shah recently held a review meeting on the natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh, where massive loss of lives and livelihoods have been reported due to an increase in the frequency and intensity of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and torrential rainfall, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and environmental degradation in the state. The multi-sectoral central team would comprise experts from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore. To provide immediate relief to affected people in Himachal Pradesh, the Union govt has already deputed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) for a first-hand assessment of the damages. IMCT is visiting the affected areas of the state from July 18-21. A high-level committee chaired by Shah has already approved an outlay of over Rs 2,006 crore to Himachal Pradesh for recovery and reconstruction in areas affected by disasters like floods, landslides and cloudbursts in 2023, releasing the first instalment of this package (Rs 451 crore) on July 7. Earlier on June 18, Centre released an instalment of Rs 198 crore for relief measures in Himachal Pradesh under State Disaster Response Fund.

RO/ARO exam: UPPSC rolls out robust strategy
Lucknow: Ahead of the review officer/assistant review officer (RO/ARO) examination 2023 on July 27, the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has taken a slew of measures to ensure a fair, transparent and disruption-free exam that will see over 10.76 lakh candidates. To eliminate the risk of malpractice, paper leaks or any form of misconduct, a comprehensive strategy was framed involving advanced technology, strict confidentiality protocols, robust administrative oversight and stringent security arrangements. Monitoring will be carried out through a combination of artificial intelligence, CCTV surveillance and social media tracking. The examination will be conducted in a single shift at 2,382 centres across all 75 districts of the state, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. In each district, the district magistrate will serve as the nodal officer for supervision. To maintain strict confidentiality, question papers were prepared in two separate sets. A computer-based randomisation process will determine which set to use, just 45 minutes before the exam begins. Each question paper will be available in eight jumbled series, each marked with a unique and variable barcode. Candidate identification and centre allocation have been digitised to ensure transparency and eliminate potential bias. Examination centres have been assigned through a computer-generated randomisation process. E-admit cards are linked to an eight-step verification system under the One Time Registration (OTR) process, which includes critical personal information such as name, father's name, date of birth, category, high school year and roll number. Entry into exam centres will require biometric authentication and facial recognition. Dual-layer frisking will be conducted jointly by the police and the implementing agency, said a govt spokesperson. To ensure rigorous supervision at each exam centre, a team consisting of a sector magistrate, a static magistrate, a centre administrator, two deputy centre administrators, and trained invigilators will be deployed. The centre administrator will appoint half of the invigilators, while the district magistrate/district inspector of schools will assign the other half. Invigilator duties will also be determined through computer randomisation to ensure impartiality. Additionally, a dedicated social media monitoring cell has been established to track and respond swiftly to any rumours, leaks, or suspicious online activity. The use of electronic devices will be strictly prohibited within examination centres.
