Liverpool's Emotional Summer: Scouser Tommies Reflect on the Loss of Diogo Jota
The latest episode of Scouser Tommies on Anfield Index offered an emotionally charged reflection on Liverpool's heartbreaking summer, following the tragic and unexpected passing of Diogo Jota. Hosted by Jim Boardman and Jay Reid, the podcast was a poignant listen, honouring not only the life of a beloved player but also the collective grief shared across the Liverpool community.
Grief Beyond the Pitch
Jim Boardman opened with a deeply personal moment, sharing the compounded sorrow he experienced after losing his nephew shortly before the news of Jota's death broke. 'It coincided like a week before my nephew suddenly passed away,' he revealed. That double blow made the grief even harder to process, and as Jim admitted, 'I was struggling to even talk about it out loud to people at the time.'
Jota's death reverberated throughout the Liverpool fanbase, and both hosts spoke to the strange but very real bond that supporters feel with players. 'You don't know them in real life, so to speak,' said Jim, 'but the loss still feels strong.' It was a reminder of the emotional investment fans give to the game and those who represent the club.
Liverpool's Response: Dignified and Compassionate
One thing both Jim and Jay were united on was praise for how the club responded to the tragedy. 'I honestly can't fault the way Liverpool handled it,' Jim said, recalling how the official club website quietly paused all other stories, replacing the front page with tributes and respect. 'There's not been any hurriedness, any rushedness,' he added. 'They've allowed the players and staff to come to terms with it.'
Jay Reid echoed that admiration, highlighting the wider football community's support. 'I saw so many different coloured shirts and flags and scarves that weren't Liverpool ones,' Jim noted, underlining the solidarity shown by fans from clubs like Everton, Man United, Chelsea and Man City.
The emotional impact went beyond Anfield too. Jay recalled attending an Oasis gig in Manchester, where the band played 'Live Forever' in tribute to Jota. 'I found myself emotional over a Liverpool player,' he admitted, describing it as 'a real touch of class.'
Retiring the Number 20 Shirt
As tributes continued to pour in, conversation turned to the symbolic gesture of retiring Jota's squad number. Jim, who had always resisted the idea in the past, said he'd changed his stance. 'This is the absolutely perfect way to do it,' he stated. 'No one would want to take that number anyway.'
Jay added, 'This year will never be forgotten for so many reasons, but the number 20 now will always be synonymous with Jota—and rightly so.'
Moving Forward, Together
Despite the sadness, the podcast ended with a call to keep moving forward in the spirit of unity. 'Diogo would want us to enjoy the season,' said Jim. Jay spoke of how Liverpool's next successes would now take on new meaning. 'There'll be no better tribute if the club go on and achieve success next season because it will be emotionally driven in Jota's honour and in memory.'
Liverpool, under Arne Slot, are already Premier League champions. But as Jay pointed out, 'The best tribute from this club is doing stuff on the pitch.' And if this past summer has shown anything, it's that the bond between the club, its players, and its supporters remains one of the strongest in football.
As Jim concluded, 'Thanks to Liverpool for being such an amazing club.'

Real Madrid retain interest in Premier League defender

There has been a lot of noise surrounding Real Madrid's interest in Ibrahima Konate lately. The Frenchman is currently in the final year of his contract at Liverpool, with multiple reports suggesting that he will join Real Madrid as a free agent next summer. Real Madrid are interested in signing Konate this summer as well, but Liverpool are holding out for a hefty price tag for the French international. However, Konate is not the only Premier League centre-back Real Madrid are keeping an eye on. Real Madrid remain interested in Saliba According to L'Equipe, Real Madrid are also monitoring the progress of William Saliba, who had emerged as the club's top defensive target earlier in the summer. Real Madrid, in fact, were determined to sign Saliba as part of their plans to shore up their defensive unit. However, he ended up becoming too expensive for the club. William Saliba remains a top target for Real Madrid (Photo by) As a result, Real Madrid opted to sign Bournemouth youth prodigy Dean Huijsen, who has done a decent job since joining the club before the FIFA Club World Cup. The Spanish giants, though, are determined to add more defensive firepower, perhaps in the summer of 2026. That is where Saliba might come into the picture once again. The Frenchman is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, having played a key role in Arsenal's success under Mikel Arteta. That said, Saliba may still cost a fortune next summer as the Frenchman has a long-term contract at Arsenal, which doesn't expire until 2027. Therefore, unless Real Madrid are willing to break the bank for Saliba next summer, Ibrahima Konate is likely to remain the club's top defensive target in 2026, providing the Liverpool star doesn't join this summer.

Liverpool reportedly agree $110 million fee for Hugo Ekitike — How will he fit in?

With multiple reports claiming that Liverpool have agreed a fee of $110 million to sign Hugo Ekitike, the Reds will take their incredible summer of spending to over $370 million. MORE — Full transfer ins and outs for all Premier League clubs David Ornstein reported that an "outline agreement" is in place as talks are almost complete between Liverpool and Eintracht Frankfurt and the transfer fee for Ekitike, including add ons, will be over $110 million. The likes of Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports have since shared similar details, with the former saying that Ekitike has agreed a six-year contract at Liverpool. But what will Ekitike bring to Liverpool? Where will he fit in to the team as the reigning Premier League champions aim to go back-to-back? Hugo Ekitike is a perfect fit for Slot's fluid system Ekitike, 23 years old, is a versatile forward who is going to thrive in Arne Slot's fluid attacking system and this is one of those deals where it makes all the sense in the world. The French striker is able to play off the shoulder of the last defender and make clever runs in-behind, while he also loves to drift wide and that should open up space for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luiz Diaz and Florian Wirtz to exploit. Ekitike's imminent arrival suggests that Darwin Nunez is on his way out this summer, while the likes of Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo will also be pushed further down the pecking order. After a few years of frugality, Liverpool have gone big on signings and Ekitike, Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Milos Kerkez are set to be regulars for most of the next decade. All of them are on their way up and are hungry to prove they belong at the very top. That is exactly the kind of drive Arne Slot's side need as they aim to defend their Premier League title and go all the way in the Champions League. How many goals could Ekitike add to Liverpool? Ekitike scored 22 goals in all competitions last season — including 15 goals and eight assists in 31 starts in the Bundesliga — as he helped Frankfurt qualify for the Champions League. His expected goals (xG) tally was 21.7 in the Bundesliga last season, so he got himself into better situations than his goal tally suggests, and if he can continue to improve his finishing he will surely get close to the 30-goal marker in all competitions each season in the future. It seems like he's right on the cusp of breaking out into one of the best versatile forwards in Europe and this signing has a similar feel to when Liverpool signed Sadio Mane in the summer of 2016. Let's see if Ekitike, and Liverpool's other new signings, can deliver on the big expectations. Everything is pointing towards more shrewd business, and long-term success, from Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes and Co. behind-the-scenes at Liverpool.

'Tiger-like' Scheffler set to spoil McIlroy dream in British Open finale

Dominant world number one Scottie Scheffler takes a four-shot lead into the final round of the British Open on Sunday, leaving local hero Rory McIlroy praying for a miracle. McIlroy dubbed his American rival's brilliance over the first three days at Royal Portrush as "inevitable" as he maintains a stunning run of form that has already seen Scheffler claim the PGA Championship this year. When leading at the 54-hole stage, Scheffler has won his last nine tournaments and it will take an unexpected collapse or charge from the chasing pack to deny him a fourth major. Li Haotong is his closest challenger at 10 under par as he aims for history by becoming the first Chinese man to win a major. Matthew Fitzpatrick sits third, five shots off the lead, after stumbling down the back nine on Saturday. McIlroy appears the one big threat to a serene Sunday afternoon for Scheffler as the Masters champion tries to ride the wave of support on a course just over 60 miles from where he took his first steps in the game just outside Belfast. Tens of thousands of fans were already on the course Sunday morning, waiting eagerly to see if McIlroy can produce a spectacular charge. For much of Saturday, the crowds following McIlroy's every move were in raptures. Three birdies in his opening four holes and an eagle at the 12th powered the world number two to a round of 66 and a share of fourth place. But the 2014 British Open champion remains six shots off the lead, a gap even he recognises is hard to bridge given Scheffler's class. "Scottie Scheffler is inevitable. Even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he's the complete player," said McIlroy. "He's playing like Scottie. I don't think it's a surprise. Everyone's seen the way he's played or plays over the last two or three years. He's just so solid. He doesn't make mistakes." - Scheffler not 'fulfilled' - Scheffler raised eyebrows in his pre-tournament media duties by stating his is "not a fulfilling life" despite his success and standing in the game. "It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes. It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric feeling," he added. Yet, it is hard to see Scheffler being robbed of his few moments of bliss come the 18th green on the Causeway Coast. Victory would see him become only the second player after Tiger Woods to win the British Open while ranked world number one. His streak of 10 consecutive top-10 finishes is also set to continue, a run that includes three tournament wins. That level of consistency has sparked comparisons to Woods' heyday, even if Scheffler remains some way off the latter's 15 majors. "He's an exceptional player. He's world number one, and we're seeing Tiger-like stuff," said Fitzpatrick of his playing partner on Saturday. However, that hype does not appear to matter to the man who is on course to lift the Claret Jug for the first time. "Winning major championships is not an easy task, and I've put myself in a good position," said Scheffler. "Going into tomorrow I'm going to step up there on the first tee and I'm going to be trying to get the ball in the fairway, and when I get to the second shot I'm going to be trying to get that ball on the green. "There's not really too much else going on." kca-jc/ea
