The Smiths fans hail one member as 'underrated genius' behind the band's success

Daily Record14-05-2025
The legendary British band shot to fame in the 1980s, with many fans still gushing over them today.
Fans of The Smiths have been vocal in asserting that the band's success wouldn't have been the same without a certain member, and it might not be the one you'd initially suspect. The iconic 1980s group were renowned for their distinctive sound, contemplative and occasionally existential lyrics, and hits like 'How Soon Is Now?' and 'This Charming Man'.
They were fronted by Morrissey with his signature vocals. The lineup was rounded out by Johnny Marr on guitar, Andy Rourke on bass, and Mike Joyce on drums.

Despite Morrissey and Marr being hailed as the songwriting masterminds, fans are adamant that another member was indispensable to the band's heyday. In the comments section of the YouTube video for 'Barbarism Begins at Home (2011 Remaster)', music lovers were effusive about the brilliance of the late Andy Rourke.

Andy's passing at the age of 59 in 2023 was made public by his ex-bandmate Johnny Marr, who penned a heartfelt Instagram tribute to announce the sad news, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Marr's homage read: "Andy and I met as schoolboys in 1975. We were best friends, going everywhere together.
"When we were fifteen, I moved into his house with him and his three brothers, and I soon came to realise that my mate was one of those rare people that absolutely no one doesn't like".
He continued by reflecting on their shared ambition to become "the best musicians" they possibly could.
Marr said: "Throughout our teens, we played in various bands around south Manchester before making our reputations with The Smiths from 1982 to 1987, and it was on those Smiths records that Andy reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player."

Marr also noted that Andy's baselines were "dazzling".
He concluded his message by saying: "Andy will always be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by everyone who knew him, and as a supremely gifted musician by people who love music. Well done, Andy. We'll miss you, brother".
Fans took to the comments section of the YouTube video to express their admiration for Andy Rourke's contribution to The Smiths.

One fan posted: "RIP Andy Rourke. Often extremely overlooked how vital the rhythm section was for the Smiths".

"Andy Rourke is a completely underrated bass player," another echoed in tribute.

Someone else suggested greater recognition for the bass player, saying: "When people think of The Smiths, they always concentrate on Moz and Marr, but they should also concentrate on the great rhythm section, especially those Andy Rourke bass lines".
Praising his musical prowess, a YouTube user exclaimed: "Anyone who knows bass playing understands the true genius of the riff is not just coming up with it...but actually playing the damn thing repetitively for nearly 7 minutes without dropping a note.
"Watch them do it live in front of not only a live audience but also millions watching at home LIVE. Andy not only had imagination and obvious skill but b***s the size of Wembley...true talent".

Taylor Swift obliterates Trump and Joe Rogan's podcast ratings

The most anticipated sports podcast episode in history ended up giving the world's biggest pop star bragging rights over the President of the United States. Wednesday night saw a special release of the 'New Heights' podcast where co-host and Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce brought on his pop superstar girlfriend, Taylor Swift . Teasers leading up to the episode revealed that Swift would be unveiling the cover and release date for her highly-anticipated 12th album, 'The Life of a Showgirl'. Swifties flocked in droves to listen to the episode live - breaking the record for the most-watched live-streamed podcast in YouTube's history at 1.3 million viewers. It shattered the previous mark - held by 'The Joe Rogan Experience' when the eponymous host brought on then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump . Not only that, but the New Heights YouTube channel saw a spike in subscriber numbers. The channel began at 2.85 million subs before the episode began. At the time of publishing, the subscriber count sits at 2.97 million. While it did break the live-viewership record, it still has some ways to go to catch up to the 24-hour viewer count that the Trump episode of Rogan had. In the first 24-hours of that episode, Rogan's channel had 26 million views. At the time of publishing, the YouTube video of the New Heights show has 9.5 million in the first 14 hours (with 6 million views coming in the first five hours). But breaking one record held by Trump is sure to be a feather in Swift's cap after she endorsed Democrat nominee and former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Trump has gone on the offensive against Swift in the past, calling her 'no longer hot' after the endorsement of Harris and mocking her for being booed at Super Bowl LIX. Not only does this two-hour conversation mark a major moment for the show, it also is a perfect full-circle moment for Travis and Taylor. Travis previously mentioned in July 2023 how he'd like to have Swift on the show and how he tried giving her a friendship bracelet at a concert in Kansas City, but that he wasn't able to meet her. Cut to now. Travis and Taylor have been the definitive storyline in the NFL over the last two years, with the sport seeing a massive spike in female audience in that time. On the episode, Swift mentioned how important that July 2023 episode was to their eventual meeting. 'This kind of felt more like I was in an '80s John Hughes movie,' Swift said. 'He was just like standing outside of my window with a boom box just being like, "I want to date you. Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet. Do you want to date me?"' She continued, 'This is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.' Kelce added, 'And I was sitting there at the Eras tour listening to every single one of those songs, like, I know what she wants me to do!' He continued, 'I'm the luckiest man in the world,' while Swift said her man is 'a vibe booster in everyone's life that he's in. He's like a human exclamation point.' Swift's album announcement was the biggest draw for the show - with the 'Cruel Summer' singer confirming the October 3 release for 'The Life of a Showgirl'. She added that there will not be any extra songs on the album - which is being produced by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin and his collaborator Shellback. The pair helped make some of Swift's biggest hits - including 'Style', 'Shake It Off' and 'Blank Space' of her multi-Grammy winning 2014 album '1989'. Unlike previous albums, Swift said there would not be any hidden tracks for 'Showgirl'. However, fans are sure to be entertained - with the tracklist released and revealing that fellow pop star Sabrina Carpenter will feature on the title track.

Huge BBC drama to return for TWO more series after replacing Holby City

School drama Waterloo Road returned to screens two years ago after the BBC cancelled medical drama Holby City in order to move TV investment away from London. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 2 Waterloo Road is returning for at least another two series Credit: BBC 2 Lindsey Coulson plays Dame Stella Drake in the drama Credit: BBC Now the series has been recommissioned for at least two more runs. The BBC says the Manchester-set programme's return, which began in 2006 and ran until 2015 before it was brought back to screens in 2023, will allow it to continue with its investment in creative talent in the north of England. Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: "I'm delighted that Waterloo Road will be opening its corridors once again, with two more series of the hit drama about to start filming. "The show continues to entertain the audience who love to follow both the staff and pupils and, with a new series heading to BBC iPlayer and BBC One next month, they don't have long to wait." The next series will see Jon Richardson make his debut as the school's new media studies teacher next month, and the show has already seen Lindsey Coulson replace comedian Jason Manford, who played Steven Savage, as new headteacher, Dame Stella Drake. During its time on TV, Waterloo Road has explored storylines such as the cost-of-living crisis, coercive control, neurodivergence, work-place politics, family drama, grief, and young love. The show has provided a launch pad for the careers of stars such as Lucien Laviscount, Rege-Jean Page and Chelsee Healey, as well as Phoebe Dynevor, whose sister Hattie Dynevor joined the series in 2024, and Adam Thomas, who returned when the series was rebooted in 2023 and remains on the show. Cameron Roach, Waterloo Road executive producer, said: 'When the BBC commissioned the reboot of Waterloo Road, we had hoped it might run for a few seasons. "But to be commissioned for further series, bringing the total episodes since relaunch to 70 hours, is a huge achievement and a reflection of the incredible creative teams in front of and behind the camera. "As well as continuing to celebrate emerging talent, the show is fast gaining a reputation for working with the best comedy talent, as Jon Richardson joins the cast this season. Kym Marsh quits HUGE TV job after overhauling her personal life "As a team we're incredibly proud that a very British show can be such an enduring success for the BBC and continue to bring in new generations of viewers." Filming for the two new series will begin in Greater Manchester later this year, with the first of the pair to launch next year.
