Governor officiates at opening of fourth term of 19th Sarawak DUN
KUCHING (May 19): The first meeting of the fourth term of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) commenced at the DUN Complex here today.
Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, officiated at the opening ceremony.
Among those present were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, as well as DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar.
Upon arrival, Wan Junaidi inspected the Guard of Honour, comprising of 105 officers and personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police and the General Operations Force, while the national and state anthems were played.
The contingent consisted of three officers and 102 other ranks, led by DSP Harun Saharudin Mohamad, with Insp Mohamad Azizi Kamil serving as the banner officer.
A prayer was then recited before the opening ceremony concluded.
All dignitaries and members of the DUN then proceeded to the DUN Chamber for Wan Junaidi's opening address.
Six Bills will be tabled at the DUN sitting including two Supplementary Supply Bills – the Supplementary Supply (2024) Bill, 2025, and the Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill, 2025.
Also slated for tabling are the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Infrastructure Development Trust Fund (Dissolution) Bill, 2025.

Chieng expresses hope that the implementation of these projects will begin under Rolling Plan 1 of 13MP. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Aug 2): The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is set to bring significant development to Sibu with the approval of several new link roads and flood mitigation projects, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng revealed. He noted that the initiatives have already secured approval, with necessary funding allocated for implementation. 'The 13MP is very important for Sibu especially, as it includes plans for several new connecting roads,' he said. Among the projects is a new link road connecting Hann's Residence Estate to Airport Road, passing through Bukit Lima Forest Park. Chieng expressed hope that the implementation of these projects will begin under Rolling Plan 1 of 13MP. 'With the rollout of 13MP, I am hoping that these link roads in Sibu will be realised soon,' he said at a Father's Day gift distribution event at the N51 Bukit Assek Service Centre today. Chieng also disclosed plans for another link road connecting Jalan Kong Yit Khim and Salim. However, due to high utility relocation costs, an alternative route connecting Jalan Bukit Penyau and Jalan Salim has been proposed. He added that a request had been made to the Land and Survey Department to establish road connections for Jalan Maling. 'They will construct a proper road link. All of these are part of 13MP. This shows the significance of 13MP (to Sibu),' he said. Chieng further highlighted the second phase of the Jalan Oya upgrading project as part of 13MP. 'In the Pelawan constituency of Datuk Michael Tiang, another new link road has also been planned under the development initiative.' During the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in May, Chieng proposed the Sentosa Flood Mitigation Project under 13MP. He said the proposal was well-received by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government. Chieng also revealed that the Jerrwit Flood Mitigation Project – designed to protect areas stretching from Kampung Saujana to Ek Dee – is anticipated to be implemented under Rolling Plan 2 of 13MP. He assured the public that these projects are no longer at the proposal stage, as necessary approvals have been granted and funding allocated. 'It's just a matter of time. Many projects are still in the design phase. The funds are available. Once 13MP is underway, they can begin the tender process. 'Hopefully, many of these projects will fall under Rolling Plan 1 so they can start sooner. Otherwise, if it's under Rolling Plan 2, it will only commence in 2027,' he said. For reference, Rolling Plan 1 refers to the first year of the 13MP, which spans from 2026 to 2030. Chieng also mentioned that Sibu needs more link roads to effectively ease traffic congestion. 'Some have proposed flyovers, but that alone will not completely solve congestion. It will just move the bottleneck elsewhere. 'However, with these new link roads, traffic congestion will be alleviated,' said Chieng. Wong made the announcement following a recent site visit with technical officers to inspect the condition of the infrastructure. He emphasised the importance of consistent maintenance once the system is activated to ensure its effectiveness in mitigating flood risks. 'People-focused projects like this must be well-maintained after activation. Only then can the gate function properly to prevent flooding in town and ensure peace of mind for the public,' he said. The system is designed to address recurring flood issues in central Tawau, particularly those caused by high tides. Wong described the gate as a key component in the broader initiative to develop and modernise the town. In addition to flood mitigation, the tidal gate system is equipped with features to trap and filter waste, contributing to improved cleanliness in the area. He visited the site again in August last year after discovering the system had not yet been connected to a power source. The delay in activation became a significant concern following a major flood event in Tawau last year. A combination of high tide and heavy rainfall caused by the 'blue squall' weather phenomenon led to severe flooding. The ground floor of Pasar Tanjung was inundated, several shops along Jalan Chester were affected, and major roads were submerged, resulting in property damage and losses for traders and residents. During the most recent DUN sitting, Wong renewed his calls for urgency, criticising the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) for the prolonged delay and urging the State Government to prioritise activation of the tidal gate system. TYT calls on Sarawak local universities to establish law faculty

The proposal was shared during a courtesy call by the Sarawak Students Association in United Kingdom at the Astana Negeri in Petra Jaya yesterday. Also present was Wan Junaidi's wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. In a Facebook post after the visit, Wan Junaidi emphasised that Sarawak's distinctive legal framework, including native customary rights (NCR) to land, requires practitioners who understand its intricacies. He expressed hope that a locally-rooted law faculty would produce legal experts who are not only academically trained but also deeply familiar with Sarawak's constitutional and legislative context. He also highlighted the importance of grasping key national documents such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Federal Constitution, and the Sarawak State Constitution, alongside the responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. He urged the students, particularly those pursuing legal training, to seek hands-on exposure through court visits and to avoid shortcuts in building their careers. He encouraged students to return home after their studies and contribute towards Sarawak's development, echoing the state government's commitment to creating job opportunities and nurturing homegrown talent.
