' (Aug 7), which highlights chronic issues such as lift breakdowns in ageing condominiums.
With over 800 condominium developments at least 30 years old, Singapore faces a growing risk of deteriorating infrastructure that threatens both safety and property value.
I would like to suggest some practical solutions that work within Singapore's legal and financial systems.
Management corporation strata titles (MCSTs) need better tools to finance major repairs. One option is government-backed, low interest loans with strict oversight. We could also allow automatic deduction of unpaid levies during property sales, ensuring financial transparency and continuity.
Special levies can be a heavy burden, especially for elderly residents. Means-tested assistance, such as subsidies or flexible payment plans, could help ensure no one is forced to choose between safety and savings.
The Building and Construction Authority should also be empowered to act faster and more decisively when MCSTs fail to maintain critical infrastructure.
This could include streamlined intervention processes and tougher penalties for non-compliance.

Mr Danish said that police have taken his statement regarding the matter. It was reported that the prank was then uploaded online by the perpetrators and soon went viral. Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SINGAPORE – Having lived in large HDB flats growing up, interior designer Samuel Lee and his wife, quantity surveyor Pearlynn Chia, needed time to adjust to the size of their new flat. 'We were willing to make compromises, but not lose the features that we grew up with. Wanting even more modern comforts while trying to make them all fit in was tough,' says Mr Lee, director and lead designer of local studio Atum Interior. In renovating the 1,001 sq ft, four-room unit in Punggol Drive, Mr Lee – who is also a contractor – let himself be guided by what he has always practised: purposeful design that pays attention to ergonomics and spatial flow. The couple, both 32, agreed on certain important criteria for the home: It should be low-maintenance, relaxing and timeless. Almost every non-load-bearing wall was removed and all the finishes were replaced, except for the flooring in the living room and bedrooms. To the left of the main entrance, a new breakfast bar-cum-shoe cabinet demarcates the entrance foyer and separates it from the kitchen. The walls between the master bedroom and adjacent bedroom were removed, then re-partitioned using new carpentry incorporating full-height, L-shaped wardrobes and a study nook with a dog door. A window above the study desk is roughly aligned with the external window of the bedroom next door. This creates a layering of spaces while offering a view out of, and allowing natural light into, the study area. In the meantime, this spare room, which has a Murphy bed, serves as a space to exercise, play mahjong or accommodate guests. Mr Lee fitted the master bathroom with large-format tiles, a wall-hung water closet, bathtub, concealed shower mixer and large twin basins. For the common bathroom, he designed a double-faced wall incorporating niches on both sides. He went with a WPC (wood-plastic composite) material for the carpentry, as it is waterproof and easy to clean. A jury last month found Erin Patterson lured her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, to lunch at her home and poisoned them with servings of Beef Wellington that contained death cap mushrooms. They also found the 50-year-old guilty of the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather's husband, who survived the 2023 meal at Erin Patterson's home in Leongatha, a town of about 6,000 people some 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Melbourne. Patterson was initially charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder in 2023, with the four additional counts relating to her estranged husband, Simon Patterson. Justice Christopher Beale previously ruled the charges should be split into two separate trials, before the prosecution dropped the attempted murder charges relating to Simon Patterson on the eve of the first trial. That meant details of the alleged attempts on her husband's life in 2021 and 2022 were never heard by the jury. The alleged poisonings left him close to death, and he became so ill he was temporarily paralysed and had part of his bowel removed, the court heard at the time. Evidence from a computer seized from Patterson's home showing searches for other kinds of poisons was also excluded from the trial.
