Police drama with perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score lauded as 'one of the best shows of 2025' as it rockets to top of streaming charts
Ballard, which is based on author Michael Connelly's Renée Ballard Series, premiered on Prime Video on July 9.
The 10-part series is a spin-off that follows on from Bosch, which aired on the streaming service between 2014 and 2021.
Ballard stars Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, Courtney Taylor as Zamria Parker, Michael Mosley as Ted Rawls and Rebecca Field as Collen Hatteras.
'Detective Renée Ballard plunges into a web of murder and corruption as she hunts a ruthless serial killer and uncovers a sinister police conspiracy that threatens everything she stands for.
'With her own demons nipping at her heels, Ballard must outwit both criminals and colleagues to bring long-overdue justice to the victims and their families,' Amazon Prime's synopsis reads.
And despite only being out a number of days it has managed to land the top spot on the streaming service's ranking.
Not only that, it has received rave reviews and many have taken online to share their views on it.
Ballard has an impressive 100% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes.
While on said on IMDB: 'Beautifully scored, honest, gritty, grounded, with a great ensemble cast.
'I'm truly surprised by Ballard - having read all 6 books, the season feels like an amalgamation of all of them, bringing a sense of urgency even to book readers.'
'Loved it.'
'Ballard is exactly what you'd hope for in a spin-off from the Bosch universe - sharp writing, layered characters, and that signature Michael Connelly blend of realism and moral complexity.
'If you're a fan of smart, character-driven crime dramas, this is a must-watch.'
'Great show.'
'True to the books and the character developed within them, this series doesn't disappoint.
'Maggie Q is excellent in the role, the story lines and rest of cast as well are exceptional.
'If you are a fan of the books or the Bosch series you'll really enjoy this.'
The series was developed by Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood.
It comes shortly after a Netflix crime drama has rocketed up the charts this week after being dubbed 'the new Ozark' by enthralled fans.
The streaming giant dropped all eight episodes of the hit last month and viewers have been binge-watching it ever since.
It's also led to the show soaring up the charts, with it currently sitting comfortably in Netflix's top 10 shows, pulling in 11.6million streams to date.
Called The Waterfront, the new dark drama's cast includes nineties movie star Holt McCallany and Grown Ups star Maria Bello.
Melissa Benoist and Jake Weary also star in the fan-favourite hit.

‘Superman' flexes its might in second weekend with $57.3 million
James Gunn's 'Superman' showed staying power in its second weekend at North American box offices, collecting $57.3 million in ticket sales and remaining the No. 1 movie in cinemas, according to studio estimates Sunday. None of the week's new releases — 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' 'Smurfs,' and 'Eddington' — came close to touching Warner Bros. and DC Studios' superhero success. 'Superman' dipped 54% from its domestic opening, an average decline for a big summer film. In two weeks, 'Superman' has grossed $406.8 million worldwide, a good start for the movie DC Studios is banking on to restart its movie operations. A big test looms next weekend, when the Walt Disney Co. releases Marvel 's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' Strong audience scores and good reviews should help propel the $225 million-budgeted 'Superman' toward profitability in the coming weeks. For Warner Bros. and DC Studios, 'Superman' is key to kicking off a 10-year plan for the comic book adaptation studio. Co-heads Gunn and Peter Safra were tasked with rehabilitating the flagging operation. Next on tap are the films 'Supergirl' and 'Clayface' in 2026. But 'Superman' is far from flying solo in theaters right now. Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World: Rebirth' came in second this weekend, with $23.4 million in its third week of release. The seventh 'Jurassic' movie, this one starring Scarlett Johansson, held its own despite the competition from 'Superman.' In three weeks, it accrued $648 million worldwide. Apple Studios and Warner Bros.' 'F1: The Movie' has also shown legs, especially internationally. In its fourth weekend, the Brad Pitt racing drama dipped just 26% domestically, bringing in $9.6 million in North America, and another $29.5 million overseas. Its global total stands at $460.8 million. But both of the biggest new releases — Sony Pictures' 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and Paramount Pictures' 'Smurfs' — fell flat. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' opened with $13 million, a fair result for a movie budgeted at a modest $18 million, but a disappointing opening for a well-known horror franchise. The film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is set 27 years after the 1997 original. Teenagers played by Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders are again haunted for covering up a car accident. The movie's reviews (38% 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes) were poor for 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and audiences graded it similarly. The film notched a 'C+' on CinemaScore. The original collected $72.6 million in its domestic run in 1997. Paramount Pictures' 'Smurfs' debuted in fourth place this weekend with $11 million. The latest big-screen reboot for the woodland blue creatures prominently features Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. But reviews (21% 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes) were terrible. Audiences were kinder, giving it a 'B+' on CinemaScore, but the $58 million-budgeted release will depend largely on its international sales. In 56 overseas markets, 'Smurfs' earned $22.6 million. Ari Aster's 'Eddington' opened with $4.2 million on 2,111 screens for A24. Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, 'Eddington' has been particularly divisive. The pandemic-set Western features Joaquin Phoenix as the right-wing sheriff of a small New Mexico town who faces off with its liberal mayor (Pedro Pascal). While Aster's first film, 2018's 'Heredity' ($82.8 million worldwide against a $10 million budget) helped establish A24 as an indie powerhouse, but the less-than-stellar launch of 'Eddington' marks the second box-office disappointment for Aster. His 2023 film 'Beau Is Afraid' cost $35 million to make but collected just $12.4 million worldwide. 'Eddington' cost about $25 million to produce. Audiences gave it a 'C+' on CinemaScore. None of Aster's previous films have been graded higher. Yet collectively, Hollywood is enjoying a very good summer. According to data firm Comscore, the 2025 summer box office is up 15.9% over the same period last year, with the year-to-date sales running 15% ahead of 2025. Summer ticket sales have amassed about $2.6 billion domestically, according to Comscore. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Superman,' $57.3 million. 2. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $23.4 million. 3. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $13 million. 4. 'Smurfs,' $11 million. 5, 'F1: The Movie,' $9.6 million. 6. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $5.4 million. 7. 'Eddington,' $4.3 million. 8. 'Elio,' $2 million. 9. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $1.5 million. 10. '28 Years Later,' $1.3 million.

Amber Heard makes rare appearance following disastrous Johnny Depp trial... two months after welcoming twins
Amber Heard is stepping back into the spotlight — and this time, onto the stage. Just two months after quietly welcoming twins, Agnes and Ocean, the actress, 39, made her return to acting with Spirit of the People at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. The star's role as Genevieve in Jeremy O. Harris' new play marks her first role since the birth of her two youngest kids in May. It also continues her gradual reemergence in the public eye following the widely publicized defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp. That legal battle concluded with a settlement in December 2022, after a six-week courtroom spectacle that drew global attention. Heard later appeared in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023, but has otherwise remained largely private since relocating to Spain. In April 2021, she announced the birth of her first child, Oonagh Paige, who was born via surrogate. Heard has not publicly identified the father of her children and previously said she choose to become a mother on her 'own terms.' On Saturday, The Rum Diary star shared a photo of herself from behind on stage, with the caption: 'What an opening weekend!' Over the weekend, Heard made a rare public appearance in a Vogue photo shoot promoting the Williamstown Theatre Festival, photographed by Hunter Abrams and Sam Lee. The shoot showed Heard outdoors, smiling in the woods alongside her castmates. Spirit of the People is part of the festival's highly anticipated 2025 season and boasts a powerhouse ensemble, including Brandon Flynn, Lío Mehiel, Ato Blankson-Wood, Zachary Booth, James Cusati-Moyer, Amandla Jahava, Emma Ramos, Julian Sanchez, and Tonatiuh. The production is directed by Katina Medina Mora. 'In an interview with Jason Grissom, [Williams] once said, 'There's magic in those woods,' in regard to the verdant woods around Williamstown I've found myself in this summer,' said Harris, 36. 'He was right: There is a magic to the madness of making theater out here that has infected all of us this summer.' 'Perhaps it's the giddy 'theatre camp for adults' energy, or just the ways in which so many new theater artists — Katina [Medina Mora], Nicholas [Alexander Chavez], Whitney [Peak], Amber [Heard], and many more — have thrown themselves headfirst into this world and aren't just keeping up but pacing some of their peers,' he continued. 'I'm in awe of each of the people assembled this summer, and I hope the experience of meeting these gorgeous works of raw, ambitious art will give you something to chew on as we all dive headlong into this precarious moment in American history,' Harris concluded. Heard had hinted at her involvement in the production on Instagram in recent weeks, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses from rehearsals. Last month, she shared a selfie with Harris, which depicted her beaming with pride as she embraced the magic of the theater and her new role. 'In my theatre era x,' the mother-of-three captioned the post. On July 3, the performer also uploaded a sweet snap of herself sitting cross legged on a stage flipping through a script. 'Work in progress,' she wrote beneath the photo, which received more than 92,576 likes. Her fans expressed their excitement about her comeback in her comments section. 'So many support you and it is well-deserved. Keep on shining,' one wrote. Another gushed: 'Amber you look so refreshed and happy, I am proud to support you <3.' 'Your smile is priceless and wonderful to see. You deserve the best!' a third commented. More raved that they were thrilled to see her 'thriving' and comfortable enough to turn back on her comments.
