First human rabies case reported in Sarawak for 2025 after 13yo boy tests positive for virus
KUCHING (May 25): The Sarawak State Health Department has confirmed the first human rabies case in the state for 2025, involving a 13-year-old boy from Kampung Segedup, Kuching.
According to a statement posted by the department on its official Facebook page today, this is the first case recorded this year and marks a decrease of two cases compared to the same period in 2024.
The boy reportedly began exhibiting symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, hallucinations, delirium, difficulty walking, and trouble swallowing water on May 21.
He initially sought treatment at a private hospital before being referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), where clinical tests confirmed the rabies infection.
'Investigations revealed that the case had a history of being scratched by a stray cat but did not seek medical treatment. He also frequently played with and fed stray cats and had previously handled the carcass of a cat that died after being hit by a vehicle.
'These behaviours indicate a high level of exposure to rabies infection,' the department said.
The boy is currently receiving treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
Despite the downward trend in confirmed rabies cases among humans, the department noted that incidents involving animal bites remain high across Sarawak.
Between 2017 and the 20th Epidemiological Week of 2025 (11 to 17 May), a total of 63,301 dog bite cases, 57,210 cat bites or scratches, and 1,832 bites by other animals were reported.
The public is reminded to exercise caution to avoid rabies infection.
'Avoid approaching, feeding, or handling stray dogs and cats with unknown vaccination status. Do not touch animal carcasses with an unclear cause of death,' it said.
Those bitten, scratched, or exposed to the saliva of animals are advised to wash the affected area with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate treatment at the nearest healthcare facility.
This includes completing the anti-rabies vaccination as scheduled.
The department also urged the public to report sightings of stray animals to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) or local authorities without making physical contact with the animals.
'Pet owners must take full responsibility by ensuring their dogs and cats receive annual anti-rabies vaccinations and are not left to roam unsupervised,' it added.
Parents are also encouraged to educate their children about the dangers of rabies and the importance of avoiding stray animals.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, or JAMA, estimated 440 'excess deaths' were attributable to the fires from Jan 5 to Feb 1, using models that compared predicted mortality under normal circumstances to actual numbers documented during that period. The additional deaths likely reflect a mix of factors, including increased exposure of people with heart and lung disease to poor air quality from smoke and toxins released by the fires, as well as healthcare delays and disruptions, the study said. The findings 'underscore the need to complement direct fatalities estimates with alternative methods to quantify the additional mortality burden of wildfires and of climate-related emergencies more broadly,' the researchers wrote. Two wind-driven wildfires that erupted during the first week of January on opposite sides of Los Angeles damaged or destroyed nearly 16,000 structures combined – laying waste to much of the seaside district of Pacific Palisades and the foothill community of Altadena. Together, the blazes scorched 152sq km, an area larger than Paris. The official tally of people who perished as a direct result of the fires stands at 31, after the most recent set of human remains were unearthed in Altadena in July, six months after the fires. Governor Gavin Newsom in February requested nearly US$40 billion in wildfire aid from Congress. Some estimates put economic losses from the fires at more than US$250 billion, making the conflagration one of the most costly natural disasters in US history. The JAMA study acknowledged some limitations, saying the data may need to be revised upward in the future and the research did not reflect any fire-attributable deaths beyond Feb 1.

MIRI (Aug 10): A total of 1,182 dogs here have been vaccinated against rabies in the first seven months of this year, said Transport minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He said that of this figure, only 93 dogs were licensed by the Miri City Council (MCC). 'This figure does not include dogs vaccinated or licensed during yesterday's (Aug 9) vaccination and licensing programme held here,' he said when visiting the vaccination site at Taman Tunku here on Sunday. During the programme yesterday, 193 dogs were vaccinated against rabies while 44 had their MCC licences renewed or newly issued. Lee said that while Miri has been rabies-free for the past several years, the public must not be complacent and continue to fulfil their responsibility by ensuring their dogs, and even cats, receive annual rabies vaccinations. He stressed the rabies vaccination must be renewed every year, and that it is free-of-charge for dogs at the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Miri. 'I urge Mirians to bring their dogs for vaccination. The protection lasts for one year. 'We want everyone's cooperation to keep Miri rabies-free. Indeed, Miri has been one of the rabies-free divisions for the past several years and we want to maintain that status,' he said. Lee said he was informed that since Jan this year, there have been 800 cases of dog bites reported in Miri. He said thus, Mirians must remain vigilant, and those bitten by dogs must immediately seek treatment at a clinic or hospital. The 2,396 cases were logged from June 8 — a week after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the onset of the rainy season — to August 7, the DOH said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 9). 'In line with this, DOH hospitals across the country are on alert and have opened several leptospirosis fast lanes to speed up check-ups for patients seeking consultation,' the agency said in Filipino. 'The agency is prepared for the anticipated rise in leptospirosis cases following the floods since July 21, due to the southwest monsoon, and cyclones Crising (international name: Wipha), Dante (Francisco), at Emong (Co-may),' the DOH added.
