Still in search of their first win, the Houston Rockets will wrap up a five-game schedule at the NBA's 2025 summer league when they face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams will be playing their final summer-league game in the league's ongoing showcase at the Thomas & Mack Center and Pavilion.
With a win-now roster centered around star players such as Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, and Alperen Sengun, the Rockets were always light on proven NBA talent for their summer-league roster — and that became even more pronounced when second-year guard Reed Sheppard was shut down after two games with a minor calf injury.

Knicks' Dink Pate registers 20-point double-double in summer league finale
Dink Pate capped off a productive stint in the NBA Summer League with a double-double to help lead the New York Knicks in a loss to the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Pate produced 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the 94-85 loss at the Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada. He went 7 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, in 26 minutes off the bench. The undrafted guard scored 11 points alone in the first half to help the Knicks build a five-point lead at the intermission. He was active on both ends of the court and had perhaps the highlight of the game after picking off a pass and taking it for a windmill jam. Pate finished summer league by averaging 9.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 50% shooting from 3-point range in five appearances with the Knicks. He also scored in double figures on Thursday after recording 11 points and seven rebounds in a loss to the Indiana Pacers. The 19-year-old averaged 10.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 30.7% shooting from 3-point range in 50 games with Mexico City in the G League last season. He registered four 20-point games, including a season-high 26 points, six rebounds and four assists on Dec. 20. Pate had a solid showing with the Knicks in the desert after going undrafted out of Mexico City. He reportedly agreed to sign with the team following the draft and will likely be in a developmental role next season on an Exhibit 10 contract.

Marcus Smart will sign with the Lakers after getting a buyout from Wizards, AP source says
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran guard Marcus Smart will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers after receiving a contract buyout from the Washington Wizards, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Wizards had yet to announce their buyout of Smart. The standout defender and two-way contributor excelled for the rival Boston Celtics for nine seasons before spending the past two years with Memphis and Washington. Smart will get a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers to join their supporting cast around Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Los Angeles filled its biggest offseason need earlier this month by signing center Deandre Ayton . Smart was the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 for the Celtics, who reached the NBA Finals that season and made nine consecutive playoff appearances during his tenure. He is a three-time member of the All-Defense first team, and he was a regular starter for Boston in his final half-decade with the team before he was traded to the Grizzlies in 2023. Because of injuries, the 6-foot-3 Smart has played in just 54 games over the past two seasons since leaving Boston, and he averaged just 20 minutes per game last season when healthy. He played in only 15 games after joining the Wizards last February as part of a three-team trade involving Jake LaRavia, who signed with the Lakers in free agency this month. Smart has never averaged more than 13.1 points per game while playing in more than half of his team's games in a season, but the Lakers undoubtedly covet his defensive contributions to a roster already featuring strong scorers. Smart will have ample opportunity to play a significant role for the Lakers, who needed another strong point-of-attack defender after losing Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets in free agency. Smart, Ayton and LaRavia are the major offseason additions to the Lakers, who lost in the first round to Minnesota last spring after their seismic midseason trade to acquire Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. Los Angeles has managed to keep its core intact apart from Finney-Smith, even resigning backup center Jaxson Hayes.
