Huddersfield Giants' dismal start to the season continued as they slipped to a seventh successive defeat at the hands of Catalans Dragons. The home side took the lead when Jacob Gagai broke through two attempted tackles to get the ball down but the visitors quickly hit back through Tariq Sims' score from Luke Keary's grubber kick. The game turned in the French side's favour when they were awarded an eight-point try for Leo Darrelatour's effort and Sam Hewitt was sin-binned for kicking out at the debutant in the act of scoring.Julian Bousquet caught a high kick on the bounce and then Bayley Sironen broke through to extend Les Dracs' advantage in the opening five minutes of the second half. Jake Bibby gave the Giants some hope, but Paul Seguier scored after a great passing move on the last tackle. The injury-hit hosts battled on gamely and Sam Halsall grabbed a high George Flanagan kick in the corner before Tevita Pangai Junior barged over for the away team for the game's final score in the last few minutes.Victory for the Challenge Cup semi-finalists was a third in four games as they look to move on from their own slow start to the year.
Giants head coach Luke Robinson had called his side's lengthy injury list "horrific" in his news conference before the game and things went from bad to worse when they lost young prop Fenton Rogers in the first 10 minutes of the game.Gagai's determined effort had put the home side in front after that but that was about as good as it got for them.Robinson's men did not help themselves when Hewitt was shown a yellow card for a petulant kick out at Darrelatour as he touched down and the French side made the most of their extra man with two tries while he was off the field.Huddersfield did manage two successful captain's challenges in the final 10 minutes but by then the game was over as a genuine contest. They travel to West Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Friday (17:30 BST), while Catalans will look to continue their improved form when they host financially-troubled Salford (18:00) the following day.

Giants place C Patrick Bailey (neck strain) on 10-day IL

June 11 - The San Francisco Giants placed catcher Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday because of a neck strain and selected the contract of catcher Logan Porter from Triple-A Sacramento. Bailey's move was retroactive to Sunday. Bailey, who turned 26 on May 29, last played on Saturday, going 0-for-3 in a 3-2 home win over the Atlanta Braves. He is batting .185 (30-for-162) with one home run and 16 RBIs in 56 games. For his career, Bailey is batting .225 with 16 homers and 110 RBIs in 274 games since making his major league debut in May 2023. The Giants selected Bailey 13th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft out of North Carolina State. Porter, 29, played in 11 games in 2023 for the Kansas City Royals and batted .194 (6-for-31) with one homer and three RBIs. San Francisco originally purchased Porter from the Royals in June 2024 and released him the next month. He signed with the New York Mets, and became a free agent in November, when the Giants signed him. The Giants also designated shortstop Osleivis Basabe for assignment. Basabe was on the 40-man roster but had not appeared in an MLB game since 2023 while with the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in 53 games this season for Sacramento and batted .242 with four home runs and 20 RBIs. --Field Level Media

Palace co-owner John Textor would sell shares for Europa League chance

The American, whose Eagle Football Group owns 43 per cent of Palace, has imperilled the club's chance of a first-ever European campaign owing to his involvement with Ligue 1 side Lyon, but is ready to offload his stake to his fellow co-owners in order to bring the saga to an end. UEFA does not allow clubs with the same ownership to compete in the same European competitions in a season. As well as his stake in Palace, the 59-year-old has a controlling stake in the French club, also via Eagle Football. However it is also reported that the European governing body does not consider Textor's influence at Selhurst Park to be decisive and is leaning towards allowing the club into the Europa League regardless. The PA news agency understands no formal decision is likely on Palace's fate until the end of June. Textor has previously spoken of his frustration at how little influence his stake entitles him to, over football matters. Victory for Oliver Glasner's side over Manchester City in last month's FA Cup final gave them their first major trophy and with it a first crack at Europe. However, Nottingham Forest have since written to UEFA to challenge Palace's Europa League spot and in the hope of taking their place. Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Greek side Olympiacos, placed his shares in the club in a blind trust before the governing body's March 1 deadline, anticipating Nuno Espirito Santo's side's European qualification. At present Forest, who finished seventh in last season's Premier League, are set to enter the Conference League but would take Palace's Europa League place, should they be deemed ineligible.
