One of world's richest horse races to offer £48,000 for finishing last
The Group 1 Lexus Melbourne Cup is Australia's greatest horse race, known as the 'race that stops the nation' is renowned around the world and has become a huge draw for horses from Europe and Japan. Last year's edition featured runners from the stables of Willie Mullins, Brian Ellison and Harry Eustace while a Japanese runner finished second behind local horse Knight's Choice.
In the build-up to the 2025 race, the Victoria Racing Club has announced the 2m handicap will offer total prize-money of £4.8 million.
The increase has been introduced to recognise every starter in a race which annually draws a maximum field of 24 horses.
As a result every horse which finishes from 13th to 24th place will be paid £48,000. In addition winners of the Geelong Cup, won by the Ellison-trained Onesmoothoperator, and Moonee Valley Gold Cup, will be guaranteed a start.
VRC chief executive officer, Kylie Rogers said: 'The Lexus Melbourne Cup is unrivalled for its history, status and reach and the VRC is proud to be able to now reward every local and international participant in the great race.
'It reflects the significant effort required to prepare and qualify for the Lexus Melbourne Cup and goes hand-in-hand with a decision to add additional qualifying opportunities through the Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
'Cup Week adds more value to the economy and the racing eco-system than any other racing carnival in the country, contributing around 10 per cent of the annual wagering turnover across the state.
'We thank Racing Victoria for its support to lift minimum prizemoney across the week, which will continue to attract the best horses, jockeys and trainers from Australia and across the world.
'In line with the club's significant improvement in its financial position this year together with a forecast to increase again in season 2025-2026, the VRC has made a considered decision to increase its returns to participants.
'Planning for the 2025 Melbourne Cup Carnival is in full swing, and this is just one of a number of exciting announcements that build momentum towards the world's greatest racing event.'

Celtic vs Newcastle United LIVE score and goal updates from Parkhead friendly
Celtic will start their Scottish Premiership title defence and quest for five-in-a-row in just a couple of weeks. And Brendan Rodgers and his Bhoys are stepping up their preparations ahead of the big kick off with a Battle of Britain friendly. Eddie Howe was once targeted by the Hoops for the manager's job but swerved it, paving the way for Ange Postecoglou. It hasn't worked out too badly for the ex Bournemouth man whop led Newcastle United to their first trophy in 70 years last season. The Magpies lifted the Carabao Cup and with Celtic lifting Scotland's equivalent as part of a domestic double, the pair clash in Glasgow. And there will even be silverware for the winners who will get their hands on the inaugural adidas Trophy, a new one-off contest between two of the brand's flagship clubs. 11:01Gavin Berry Get Shin there Celtic kicked off today with the announcement of another signing as Shin Yamada was confirmed. And he is happy to be the latest Japanese star to be snapped up by the Hoops but insists he arrives at Parkhead as his own man. The 25-year-old has completed his £1.2million switch from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale and has penned a four-year contract in Glasgow's East End. Yamada will team up with compatriots Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and fellow summer signing Hayato Inamura. And while he is also aware of the exploits of former Parkhead hero Kyogo Furuhashi, the 25-year-old is determined to create his own history in the green-and-white. Speaking to the club's webiste, he said: 'It is a huge honour for me to be here as a Celtic player and I can't wait to begin my time at this amazing club. 'Celtic is one of the top names in world football. I have already watched my countrymen like Daizen, Reo and Kyogo do so well at Celtic and I will aim to have the same impact. 'I am my own player, though, and I am ready to face all my own challenges directly. 'I want to do so well at Celtic, I know that Celtic Park is one of the best places in the world to play football with the best supporters around and I will do everything I can to make my new fans proud of me. 'I promise I will give everything I have to bring our fans success.' 10:54Gavin Berry Flashback Where does the time go? It's 30 years since Newcastle United played Celtic in a friendly to officially open the £17million North Stand at Parkhead. The Hoops were starting to get going under the late Tommy Burns and the teams drew 1-1 with John Collins and Les Ferdinand the scorers. David Ginola starred for Kevin Keegan's men after the Frenchman had rejected the chance to join Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain. 10:46Gavin Berry Geordies are talk of the Toon Ticket sales for this one were initially sluggish among the home fans but they have really picked up in the build up to the game and it could be a sell-out. The away fans had no such trouble in terms of appeal with the Geordies snapping up around 10,000 tickets. That should help make an incredible atmosphere with many of the Toon Army making a weekend of it in Glasgow. It wasn't so long ago they were on the other side of the city for a midweek friendly against Rangers when they brought a similarly sizeable support north of the border. 10:42Gavin Berry Howe-away the lads There's a parallel reality where Eddie Howe landed the Celtic job back in 2021 but it's fair to say it's worked out well for both parties since. The Hoops, after all, have continued to dominate under Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, while Howe has led the Magpies back to the European stage and delivered their first major trophy in 70 years. Howe had doubts over the make-up his coaching staff which sparked him to exit protracted talks to become Neil Lennon 's permanent successor in June 2021. The Englishman saying no opened the door to Postecoglou who rebuilt the Parkhead side. However, Howe's main sticking point didn't faze Postecoglou who left Yokohama Marinos and didn't bring his own staff with him. The Australian's success came alongside John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan despite the duo suffering flak for their role in Celtic's botched attempt to secure 10 In A Row. In a previous interview, Howe admitted the chance to rebuild the Hoops appealed but he declined to join the club after being unable to add trusted lieutenants Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone. Celtic was the one job I'd been offered that really appealed. The issue there was my staff. I felt that if I was to come into a pressured job like that, I needed to go in with a sense of stability. I could have recruited new staff, but then you're working each other out and there's a transition process where it probably takes three, four, five months. That's five months too late. I needed my staff with me and we couldn't get them together.
