West Coast footballer banned for ‘highly offensive' slur
West Coast midfielder Jack Graham has admitted to using a 'highly offensive' homophobic slur during his team's loss to the Giants.
The AFL on Sunday handed down a four-match suspension.
According to the football club, Graham informed team official he had said the offensive comment during the Giants' 59-point loss at Optus Stadium on Friday, July 5.
The AFL said in a statement the club then notified the league about the incident on Monday.

The 27-year-old is in breach of AFL Rule 2.3(a), Conduct Unbecoming, with Graham self-reporting to the Eagles before the league were made aware on Friday morning.
It has been reported it occurred during the second quarter of the match.
According to the AFL, Graham used a highly offensive homophobic slur against a GWS Giants opponent, which 'demeans and denigrates persons regardless of their sexuality'.
Channel 7's Mitch Cleary reported Graham's comment was one singular word.
Graham has apologised privately to the unnamed Giants player his slur was directed towards.
The AFL said Graham had also made an apology to chief executive Andrew Dillon.

The two-time Richmond premiership player — who is now a part of West Coast's leadership group — will undertake Pride in Sport education as a result of his actions.
'I am very remorseful for the word I used and know such language has no place in our community or our game,' Graham said via a West Coast club statement.
'I have offered my unreserved apology to the Giants player and Greater Western Sydney and would also like to publicly apologise for my comment.
'What I said does not reflect my values or our Club values. I made a mistake and need to be better and will prove that through my actions going forward.'
Eagles chief executive Don Pyke added: 'The word Jack used is completely unacceptable and does not align with societal and Club values.
'Player welfare was front of mind throughout the process and we were in regular contact with the Giants following the match and earlier this week around this situation.
'With no match day report being lodged, both clubs agreed the appropriate course of action was to refer the matter to the AFL.
'Jack personally called AFL CEO Andrew Dillon to apologise and has taken full responsibility and accepted the sanction that has been handed down.

Given his four-game ban, Graham has been withdrawn from Sunday evening's clash against Port Adelaide. After initially being omitted, young ruck Jack Williams replaces him and holds his place in the side.
Graham is the fourth AFL player in 16 months to be suspended for the use of a homophobic slur, with Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson, Gold Coast's Wil Powell and St Kilda's Lance Collard each receiving suspensions between four and six weeks.
'Everyone understands the word he used is both hurtful and totally unacceptable in any setting, ever.' AFL Head of Integrity and Security Tony Keane said in the AFL's own statement.
'The AFL is very clear that homophobia has no place in our game, nor in the community. We have come a long way as a code, but this incident demonstrates there is so much more to be done, and we will continue to work together to improve our game as a safe and inclusive environment for all.
'The AFL will continue to consider the specific circumstances in each incident in determining appropriate responses. Graham's sanction would have been higher if he hadn't self-reported and understood his comment was totally inappropriate.'

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter says the entire club is sick of losing, but he doesn't think it will dissuade Harley Reid from sticking around. The Eagles slumped to their eighth consecutive defeat on Saturday night when they imploded in the third quarter on the way to a 49-point loss to fellow strugglers Richmond. West Coast trailed by just nine points at halftime before Richmond piled on eight goals to one in a devastating third-quarter blitz to run away with the 16.9 (105) to 8.8 (56) win. Reid racked up a whopping 20 disposals and six clearances in the first half, but he was restricted to just four possessions in the third quarter after Jack Ross was sent to him as a hard tag. Even Richmond coach Adem Yze said he felt "sorry for the kid" given Reid, at just 20, is now the No.1 target for opposition taggers. West Coast (1-17) are destined to collect their second wooden spoon in the space of three seasons, and Reid has tasted just six victories in his 38-game career. Reid is contracted until the end of 2026, but the depths of West Coast's despair has raised questions about whether the Victorian will re-sign. McQualter doesn't think West Coast's plight will put Reid off from staying, however. "I think if you see Harley and the way he's invested, he's absolutely in and he's a competitor," McQualter said. "He's wanting to do everything to get this club out of this position. "Nobody likes losing, I appreciate that part of it. We're all sick to death of it to be honest. "But we're the only people that can make a change. It's people inside the four walls that can get us out of here and we have to do it together." Once Reid was tagged on Saturday night, West Coast had no other midfielder stand up. It was a far different scenario last year when Elliot Yeo - who has missed all of this season with an ankle injury - was there to provide Reid with big-bodied support. "We are aware that we've got a 20-year-old carrying our midfield," McQualter said. "It's not an easy position for him. As a team we have to find more people and players and ways to not rely on one person. "I thought Harley was by far our best player tonight. "I loved his team-first approach, the way he attacked the ball. He was inspirational to his teammates. I love the way he went about it." Reid tallied just seven disposals in the second half, but he managed to kick two goals when he was sent into attack in the last quarter. "It wasn't too much fun. He didn't like it," Ross said of his tagging job on Reid. "Harley had an unbelievable first half ... but I like the challenge. He's a hell of a player. "He took me to places of the ground I haven't been yet. A great talent."

CHAMPION rival driver Luke McCarthy hailed Leap To Fame the greatest pacer he had seen after the Queensland champion romped his way to a second record-breaking Inter Dominion pacing final win at Albion Park on Saturday night. In front of a packed and one-eyed local crowd, Leap To Fame romped away for his 22nd successive win at his home track and his 56th win from just 69 lifetime starts. The $540,000 first prize also made him the all-time richest pacer in this part of the world with $4,630,884 – surpassing another great Queenslander, Blacks A Fake's $4,575,438 stakes tally. McCarthy, who finished fourth on defending Inter Dominion champion Don Hugo, said: 'He's amazing. He started the shortest priced favourite ($1.22) since the Inter Dominion began in 1936 and, after being crossed at the start, worked around to take the lead and was never in danger. 'This time it's more of a relief, the expectation was just so huge,' trainer-driver Grant Dixon said. 'We had a little scare during the week. He bucked and knocked his leg, which he's never done, but thankfully it wasn't anything serious.' Leap To Fame became just the eighth pacer to win multiple Inter Dominion finals and owners Kevin and Kay Seymour hinted strongly at chasing a third crown, which only three other pacers have done (Blacks A Fake, Im Themightyquinn and Our Sir Vancelot). 'The big studs have been coming hard at us to retire him, but we'll hold off for at least another year,' Kevin Seymour said. 'We've been in the game over 50 years and this is the horse we've dreamt of getting … Kay won't let me retire him, at least not for a while yet. 'It's important everyone understands the huge role Grant and Trista Dixon have played in making this horse.' In typical Seymour fashion, he said the winning trophy would go to Albion Park track photographer, Dan Costello, who is facing a huge battle with cancer. 'Dan's one of nature's gentlemen and is going through a really hard time. I'd love him to have the trophy and Kay and I will donate $100,000 of the prize money towards Dan's medical bills,' he said.
