Fiery racing passion will ignite with more than twenty local stables represented over five races tomorrow (Sunday). Race 5 (Initiation) 1,100m over sandtrack will be a competitive affair with a robust line-up of several contenders. Magic Opa is favourite but Billie Jean can threaten seriously in latter stages. Putra Rinaking loves to seize an early lead and should be closely watched.
Advertisement Ranger Ranch likes to sit back, bides his time and then attack the line. Puteri Seroja is a seasoned trooper with strong chances for a placing. Race 4 (Novice) 1,000m over sandtrack pits Country Song against lead from front type, Ratu Pantai. Triten has ability to surprise with Malkita rounding up the selections. Speed merchant Wattzilla should take down Race 3 (Novice) 1,000m sandtrack. Dedek Girl, Seaworld and Gereek can try their best to challenge. Sunday also sees Royal Sabah Turf Club's (RSTC) Sabah Win and Sabah Star entered respectively for Race 1 and Race 5 at Selangor Turf Club. Sabah Win is marked as one of the favourites alongside Pacific Soldier and Sky Eight. Sabah Win has raced credibly in his last five runs with two second positions and one third placing. Race 5 features Sabah Star up against a classy field of 11 starters. His recent form has been patchy and less than satisfactory. He can use this occasion to build up condition and confidence. Favourites are Per Incrown, Cool Sixty-One and The Star. Kinabalu Light is emergency acceptor at Race 13 (1,700m). He is a proper long distance type and has decent performance record. He has outside chance of a top four finishing. Heavy favourites for this race are Happy Warrior and Pacific Rainbow. Today (Saturday) showcases eleven Hong Kong races from 4pm to 9.15pm. Race 4 (Class 4) over 1,200m dirt track is worth matinee watching. This intriguing race sees fan favourite apprentice-jockey Britney Wong locking direct horns with champion jockey Z Purton. Wong has been the one to beat on Sha Tin's dirt track this season, accumulating 8 winners from 58 rides. Slated to ride top weight Fun N Fun Together, Purton has strong chance of defeating Wong. Patch of Watch under Wong is going for a third victory on dirt. Patch of Watch had crushed his rivals on dirt track four starts previously and then returned to victory with another virtuoso performance on May 18. Race 8 (Class 2) over 1,200m turf sees four-year old Bottomuptogether trying to cement his glowing reputation against creditable opposition Call Me Glorious, Wunderbar and Raging Blizzard. ‘No 2026 Grand Slam Track till athletes paid'

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: The troubled event are struggling to compensate athletes from the three meetings that took place in 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, Miami and Philadelphia. PARIS: The financially troubled Grand Slam Track circuit will not take place in 2026 until athletes awaiting prize money for this year are paid, its founder Michael Johnson said on Friday. Johnson admitted in a statement 'we are struggling with our ability to compensate' athletes from the three meetings that took place in 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, Miami and Philadelphia. The four-time Olympic sprint gold medallist said he had taken the decision to cancel the fourth and final meeting in Los Angeles 'to avoid further losses and start the lengthy process of stabilising the company to get back on track. 'But unfortunately, we saw circumstances change in ways beyond our control,' he said. He added: 'The 2026 season will not happen until those obligations are met—and that is my #1 priority.' Johnson said he had held talks with new investors and he remained 'confident' about the future of Grand Slam. 'We're not done yet. Not even close,' he said. Johnson launched Grand Slam as an alternative to the Diamond League series of international meetings with an important difference—it would only feature track events and no field events. He promised a more concentrated format with more head-to-head races between the world's best athletes. However, while the series was able to recruit stars such as US Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas and 400m hurdles world record holder and double Olympic gold medallist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, it failed to recruit a host of top sprinting talent including the reigning men's and women's 100m champions Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred. The series offered athletes prize money of up to $100,000 for their overall standings after participating in two races at each meet. Athletes were pictured holding up giant cheques showing how much money they had won. However, while the competitors expressed enthusiasm for the series, there were clear signs it had failed to capture the imagination of fans. There were Swathes of empty seats at the opening meeting in Kingston, while for the third meeting in Philadelphia, the programme was cut from three days to two. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Independence Month Futsal kicks off

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Gerry Lewis Text Size: The tournament involved teams from various government departments across Tambunan. TAMBUNAN: The District-level Independence Month celebration kicked off with a lively Inter-Department Futsal Tournament at the District's Sports Complex, Saturday. Deputy Chief Minister cum State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Jeffrey G. Kitingan, who is also Keningau MP and Tambunan Assemblyman, officiated the event. He commended the organising committee led by District Officer Sobitun Makajil, with support from the Youth and Sports Ministry, saying such tournaments not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also foster camaraderie and teamwork among civil servants. 'Independence Month is not only about patriotic songs or raising the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flag, but also about activities like this that cultivate unity and love for the nation,' he said. Jeffrey also reminded the crowd of Sabah's historic moment on August 8, 1963, when state leaders demanded independence before the formation of Malaysia. This led to the proclamation of August 31, 1963, as Sabah Independence Day, now also celebrated as Sabah Day. 'On August 31, we celebrate not only Malaya's Independence Day but also Sabah Day. Fly both the Sabah flag and Jalur Gemilang with pride as a symbol of unity,' he said. He further emphasised that sportsmanship outweighs winning, saying participation, discipline, and team spirit were the real measures of success. The ceremony continued with the presentation of souvenirs to honoured guests before Jeffrey performed a symbolic kick-off to mark the start of the tournament, which gathered teams from various government departments across Tambunan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
