Emma Watson, renowned for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding. The incident occurred on July 31, 2024, when Watson was recorded driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford. The actress, who had nine penalty points on her driving record prior to this offense, appeared in court, where it was confirmed.
At a brief hearing on Wednesday at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court, Watson was ordered to pay £1,044 in fines and costs. The 35-year-old did not attend the five-minute session, with her representatives yet to comment on the case. Watson, who graduated from Brown University with a degree in English literature in 2014, has also been pursuing a master's degree in creative writing at Columbia University.
Watson, who gained fame at the age of 11 with the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001, went on to star in all eight films of the franchise. Post-Harry Potter, she appeared in movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Bling Ring, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, with her last film role being in Greta Gerwig's Little Women (2019). She also launched a sustainable gin brand in 2023 with her brother.
In a separate case, Zoe Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in the Harry Potter films, was also fined and banned for six months for a speeding violation on the same day at the same court. Wanamaker, 76, was caught driving 46mph in a 40mph zone on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire. She was also fined £1,044, with both women now facing additional penalty points on their driving records.
Both Watson and Wanamaker were disqualified for six months due to the accumulation of 12 points on their licenses.

Anti-migrant protests turn violent in UK

The protest took place outside a southeast England hotel believed to house asylum seekers. Photo AFP Police promised Friday to track down suspects behind violence at a protest outside a southeast England hotel believed to house asylum seekers, after officers and vehicles were attacked. The violence followed several demonstrations in recent days in the town of Epping which flared after police charged an asylum seeker with sex offences. Eight police officers were injured and three vehicles were damaged, Essex police said. The unrest, which police blamed on people from "outside of our community", comes a year after anti-immigration riots rocked the UK in the wake of the fatal stabbings of three young girls in the northern town of Southport. Then, rioters targeted hotels housing asylum seekers in several different English cities, infamously attempting to set fire to one in Rotherham, northeast England. Essex police on Friday insisted officers would "continue to support those communities that want to peacefully protest" but would not tolerate "acts of violence and vandalism". "After last night I've got a team of specialist detectives today that are combing through the body-worn video CCTV to identify those who are responsible," Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper told AFP. "And what I can say is if you're one of those individuals you can expect a knock on the door." Hooper said the "selfish individuals" behind the violence were mostly "from outside of the area" and had travelled to Epping "intent on causing criminality". Right-wing agitators, including far-right activist Tommy Robinson, have been sharing posts and videos about the situation on social media. Footage of Thursday's protests showed masked people pelting police vans and jumping on them, as well as clashing with officers. The disturbances came after police charged 38-year-old asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu with three counts of sexual assault, one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and one count of harassment without violence. The charges stem from allegations he tried to kiss a 14-year-old girl as she ate pizza at a restaurant in Epping, just northest of London, on July 7 and again the following day.

Netflix integrates generative AI in media production, starting with 'El Atonata'

Netflix has officially begun incorporating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into its film and television productions, marking a significant shift in the entertainment industry. The company revealed this development during its post-results conference call on Thursday, 17 July. Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, shared that the platform had used GenAI for the first time in creating final footage for a scene in the Argentine show El Atonata. The AI-generated scene features a building collapse, which was completed ten times faster than traditional visual effects methods and at a reduced cost, as reported by TechCrunch. Sarandos emphasised that Netflix views AI not just as a tool for cutting costs but as a means to enhance the creative process. 'We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper," he said. "There are AI-powered creator tools that allow real people to do real work with better tools. Our creators are already seeing benefits in production, particularly in pre-visualisation, shot planning, and visual effects.' Netflix used AI to create a scene in the show 'El Atonata,' finishing it 10x faster and cheaper than traditional effects. AI also helps with personalization, search, and upcoming interactive ads. Netflix Q2 revenue: $11B, with 95B hours watched so far in 2025. — Road to superintelligence (@roadtoasi) July 18, 2025 The use of AI tools in visual effects previously required high budgets, with advanced techniques like de-aging reserved for larger projects. However, Sarandos explained that AI is now enabling smaller-scale productions to access these cutting-edge tools. Greg Peters, Netflix's co-CEO, also mentioned that GenAI is being utilised in other areas of the company's operations, including personalisation, search, and advertising. Netflix is aiming to roll out interactive ads in the second half of 2025, following the successful launch of AI-powered search earlier this year. Netflix reported a revenue of $11.08 billion for the second quarter of 2025, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. The company also reported a profit of $3.13 billion and highlighted that users watched over 95 billion hours of content in the first half of the year, with non-English titles accounting for one-third of all views.

HBO's Harry Potter reboot reportedly casts Voldemort in secret

Recent reports suggest that Lord Voldemort has been cast for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television reboot, though the actor's identity has not been officially disclosed. Filming began in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios, where the original film series was also shot. The speculation began after an anonymous social media post claimed that the role of Voldemort had already been filled but that the studio plans to keep the casting secret until the show premieres. Fan accounts have since circulated similar claims, indicating that the Dark Lord will appear earlier than expected possibly across multiple episodes in season one. A rumor originating from the fan account MovieMagick added fuel, stating that while the casting is reportedly confirmed, the reveal will be withheld. It also named Cillian Murphy and Matt Smith as rumored front-runners for the role, though neither actor nor the studio has confirmed or commented publicly. Major outlets covering the series have noted that HBO is still finalizing key details around the character's inclusion and timeline. While initial expectations were that Voldemort might not appear until later seasons, the new speculation suggests his arc could begin far sooner. No official statements have been made by HBO or Warner Bros. The series is slated to premiere in 2027, with the first two seasons expected to consist of six episodes each. Casting for Harry, Hermione, and Ron has already been officially announced.
