876 assets upgraded across 14 stations
Phase 2 saw the overhaul of 876 VAC assets across 14 stations and two car parks along the Red Line. Notably, the project was completed without any disruption to train operations. This builds on the success of Phase 1, which covered 261 assets across 13 stations.
The 10-month program was carefully scheduled during off-peak hours and night shifts to ensure smooth station operations and uninterrupted service for commuters.
Next phase to focus on energy efficiency
Preparations are already underway for Phase 3, which will target the remaining 25% of public-area fan coil units (FCUs) and air handling units (AHUs) located in back-of-house and critical rooms across Red Line stations. Testing and verification work began in mid-July 2025.
The RTA is continuing its VAC Enhancement Project with a focus on energy optimisation and a potential shift toward variable flow technology—part of a broader effort to enhance sustainability and reduce energy consumption system-wide.

Dubai: Smart Nol card top-ups see 20% rise as less commuters rely on ticket machines
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced a 20 per cent increase in nol card top-up transactions through digital channels during the first half of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. This reflects ongoing efforts to advance digital transformation in public transport services and enhance customer satisfaction. The authority explained that the improvements included the provision of digital machines for ticket sales and top-ups, public awareness initiatives encouraging the use of digital channels such as the website and mobile payment applications, in addition to raising the minimum top-up amount for nol cards through machines and ticket sales offices. Statistics showed a 28 per cent decrease in the total number of top-up transactions via ticket vending machines, while digital transactions via these machines increased by 20 per cent. Meanwhile, cash transactions at ticket sales offices declined by 37 per cent, and digital transactions by six per cent, resulting in an overall 26 per cent drop in transactions at ticket offices. The RTA affirmed that this shift contributed to shorter queues and lower operating costs related to cash handling, along with an 80 per cent decrease in vending machine malfunctions due to fewer cash-based transactions.

Until further notice, motorists will need to use alternative routes, including Street 31 (next to the ENOC Petrol Station), Dubai Science Complex Exit, Al Hadaeq Street, and Hessa Street. There's no official reopening date yet, so plan accordingly and follow diversion signs. Spanning a 25km stretch between Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, the project will expand the road from three to five lanes in each direction, boosting capacity to 9,000 vehicles per hour, a 65% increase. The system uses AI-powered cameras in driving school vehicles to track the behaviour of instructors and trainees. Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department at RTA's Licensing Agency, the system has monitored 1,734,790 training sessions. These sessions involved 245,764 trainees over the past seven months. RTA reported that this marks a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year. This system supports RTA Dubai's vision of becoming the world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility. It also reflects the authority's strong commitment to digital transformation and innovation in monitoring practices. RTA revealed that the system is operated by the Licensing Intelligent Operations Centre and supported through smart tablets used by inspectors. As a result, inspection times have been cut from 20 minutes to just one minute. Furthermore, the number of recorded violations increased fivefold. The smart system includes several advanced technologies: Real-time, 24/7 monitoring through smart cameras AI and computer vision to track instructor and trainee behaviour These features help detect violations such as mobile phone use, not fastening seat belts, leaving training zones, improper uniforms, and distractions like eating, drinking, or sleeping while driving. RTA stated that the Smart Monitoring System marks a shift in how field inspections are carried out. It aligns with the wider digital strategy of Dubai's government and aims to create a professional, safe training environment for future drivers. Additionally, RTA revealed that more upgrades are coming. These include predictive analytics and integration of instructor performance data with licensing systems. The enhancements aim to create a more robust and connected monitoring framework. The authority emphasized the role of training companies in meeting safety and regulatory standards. RTA works closely with its strategic partners to provide high-quality, compliant training services. The system also supports awareness and improvement across all training institutions in Dubai. This initiative further reinforces RTA Dubai's role in advancing smart mobility and safety solutions through digital innovation.
