Baseball players' union head hopeful of major leaguers participating in 2028 Olympics

Baseball players' union head Tony Clark says plans are moving ahead exploring the possibility of using major leaguers in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
'There's a lot of work that need to be done,' he told the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. 'We're hopeful that we can figure our way through it.'
The World Baseball Softball Confederation said Monday the baseball tournament will be played from July 15-20 at Dodger Stadium. MLB is considering whether it can interrupt its 2028 season to allow major leaguers to participate, which could necessitate changes to the sport's national television contracts.
Clark said among the issues are insurance and 'what does it mean for those players that aren't participating?'

Red-hot Brewers bid to complete season sweep of Dodgers

July 20 - The Milwaukee Brewers not only will be chasing a 10th consecutive victory on Sunday, they will be out to finish a perfect 6-0 season series against the host Los Angeles Dodgers. Neither team has gone perfect against the other in a single season, with the Brewers going 6-1 in the 2012 season series that included a 4-0 mark on the road. Milwaukee's latest victory over Los Angeles came Saturday after Isaac Collins and Joey Ortiz hit home runs and William Contreras added a two-run double in an 8-7 decision. All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta tied a season high by allowing four runs, but the bullpen did just enough with Trevor Megill pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his 23rd save. The Brewers are one game behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, one season after they won the division by 10 games but were eliminated in the wild-card round of the playoffs. "That's what's kind of cool and unique about us: While there's not a bunch of big names, there's a bunch of guys who are hungry still," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "They remember the kind of year they had last year and how it ended. I think they're still hungry." The Brewers will send left-hander Jose Quintana (6-3, 3.28 ERA) to the mound for his second consecutive start against the Dodgers. Quintana gave up one run on two hits over six innings against Los Angeles at home July 9 when Milwaukee earned a 3-2 victory in 10 innings. In 14 career appearances (11 starts) against the Dodgers, Quintana is 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA. The Dodgers found the kind of offense they have been looking for Saturday with home runs from Shohei Ohtani, Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas. Edman had two hits to put a 0-for-29 downturn to rest. And yet the seven runs and 10 hits were not enough. "They're pitching really good," the Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez said when asked about five consecutive losses to the Brewers. "When somebody deserves credit, you have to give it to them. They ... have been playing really good baseball against us." The Dodgers are set to send veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 3.38 ERA) to the mound after he retired the two batters he faced at Tuesday's All-Star Game. Kershaw will be facing the Brewers for his second consecutive start, giving up two runs on six hits in six innings on July 8 in what ended up as his only loss of the season so far. In 20 career starts against Milwaukee, he is 9-6 with a 2.86 ERA and has 127 strikeouts over 122 2/3 innings. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave No. 2 hitter Mookie Betts the day off just two days after the season resumed from the All-Star break. Betts was 3-for-28 (.107) over his previous seven games. "He was more than willing and wanting to be out there, but for me, I felt I wanted to take (the decision) out of hands," Roberts said. "... I don't know how long (the rest) is going to be. It could be one night, it could be two. My expectation is that he will be back in there (Sunday)." The Dodgers not only have lost nine of their past 11, they have lost five consecutive home games going back to a three-game sweep by the Houston Astros from July 4-6. --Field Level Media

Revealed: Chelsea's extra motivation for winning the Club World Cup final after PSG's over-confident antics before the match

Chelsea were given a little something extra to fight for ahead of their Club World Cup final triumph over Paris Saint-Germain, a new report has revealed. The Blues outclassed the European champions last week to win 3-0 and become the first side to lift the Club World Cup in its revamped 32-team format. Enzo Maresca 's side were relentless from the first whistle in New Jersey, scoring all three before half-time and putting the game well out of reach; PSG looked a far cry from their usual selves which saw them win the treble last season. And now, it can be revealed what triggered that added motivation in the Chelsea camp. On the eve of the final, at a FIFA-organised dinner involving both clubs, Chelsea's delegation noticed how occupied PSG's representatives were with discussing the logistics of their trophy celebration. The Parisians were preoccupied with how and where they would collect the trophy, according to The Times. PSG's people were reportedly preoccupied with how and where they would collect the trophy Maresca was informed of this over-confidence and passed the information onto the players, who seemingly took it to heart. But tensions between the clubs did not stop at full-time, with a heated post-match clash between following the result. PSG boss Luis Enrique appeared to strike Chelsea striker Joao Pedro in the face during a confrontation. Pedro was initially embroiled in a conflict with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi - with Andrey Santos also on the scene - before Enrique marched over towards the situation. But rather than defusing the situation, the Spanish manager made it physical, laying his hands on Pedro before being held back by his own player Presnel Kimpembe. Pedro fell to the floor in dramatic fashion, clutching at his face. Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia stepped in to defend their team-mate, holding back a visibly frustrated Gianluigi Donnarumma, who appeared to berate Pedro for his animated reaction. What followed was pandemonium, with around five Chelsea players swarming Donnarumma in the aftermath. The PSG goalkeeper was shoved by Tosin Adarabioyo, as Kimpembe continued his attempts to defuse tensions alongside Chelsea's Filip Jorgensen. Pedro eventually got back to his feet, only to find himself at the centre of a chaotic melee involving too many bodies to count. On the touchline, a furious Enzo Maresca stormed in to drag his players away, shouting at those involved as he tried to restore order. The Chelsea boss was also seen pulling Donnarumma aside, attempting to calm his fellow Italian in a bid to defuse the flare-up. The chaotic scenes followed a match that saw six yellow cards shared between the two sides, and a red card for PSG midfielder Joao Neves, who was sent off in the 85th minute for violent conduct. Speaking on the incident, Enrique said: 'This was completely avoidable at the end, my goal was always to separate footballers, there was a lot of tension and pressure, there was a whole bunch of pushing that we should all try to avoid. My intention is to avoid it getting worse.'

Inside Bryan Braman's heartbreaking final weeks after Super Bowl winner's tragic death from cancer at 38

The final weeks of NFL player Bryan Braman's life have been revealed following his tragic death earlier this week. Braman, a former NFL defensive end and member of the Super Bowl LII-champion Philadelphia Eagles, died on July 17 at the age of 38 after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in February. It has now been revealed that the former linebacker cherished his final moments with the people he loved the most - his daughters. Braman's agent, Sean Stellato, revealed to People that his client's daughters, Blakely, 11, and Marlowe, eight, 'spent the last two weeks with him when he was dying.' 'He loved his two girls so, so much. They were everything, his legacy,' he said of the late NFL player. Stellato, who described Braman as a 'true football brother,' hailed the strength of his character. 'I would say, a warrior in every sense, on the field and in life. He faced every battle with unshakable grit and heart,' said Stellato. 'And his passing really leaves a void, not only in the football community, but in the spirit of really every underdog who ever had to fight to play this game of football.' An undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M, Braman entered the league in 2011 with the Houston Texans . He played three seasons there before spending the next four years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also played at Idaho and Long Beach City College. Braman's final game was Super Bowl LII as a member of the Eagles, who defeated the New England Patriots . He proudly celebrated in the postgame celebration holding his daughters. Braman said after retirement that winning the Super Bowl and his daughters were 'the three greatest accomplishments in my life.' The Eagles issued a statement Thursday. 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bryan Braman,' it read. 'During his four seasons in Philadelphia, Bryan was a loyal teammate, a supporter of the community, and a valuable member of our Super Bowl LII-winning team. More importantly, he was a devoted father who passionately loved his family and everyone around him. 'We extend our deepest condolences to Bryan's family and all who are grieving his loss during this difficult time.' Braman, a special teams ace in his playing days, underwent multiple surgeries in the Seattle area this year. Former Texans teammate J.J. Watt was among the contributors to his GoFundMe effort, raising around $90,000 to help cover medical costs.
