‘Speak Marathi Or Get Out': Seat Dispute In Mumbai Local Turns Into Language Debate
Last Updated: The dispute originally began over seating arrangements but quickly turned personal, with the woman's language choice becoming a flashpoint. A routine commute in a Mumbai local turned into a heated argument after a verbal altercation broke out between women passengers in the ladies' compartment, reportedly over a seat. The spat quickly turned into a debate over language, with a group of Marathi-speaking women allegedly demanding a fellow passenger stop speaking in Hindi and switch to Marathi. The incident took place in a crowded compartment and was also captured on video. In the footage, one woman is heard objecting to being addressed in Hindi, insisting that Marathi be used instead. The disagreement originally began over seating arrangements but quickly turned personal, with the woman's language choice becoming a flashpoint. 'If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi; otherwise, get out," she told her. Several videos making the rounds on social media show MNS workers confronting shopkeepers, auto drivers, and even bank employees for not speaking Marathi. In one such incident, a medical shop employee was beaten and forced to apologise publicly for allegedly posting a WhatsApp status deemed disrespectful to the Marathi language. In another separate incident, a Vikroli-based Rajasthani shopkeeper was assaulted by local Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers after he allegedly posted a WhatsApp status 'insulting the Marathi Manoos (Marathi-speaking people)'. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Omar Abdullah seeks centre's intervention in securing release of abducted Indian in Niger
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday (July 20, 2025) sought the Centre's intervention in seeking the release of a resident of Ramban district, who was allegedly abducted by terrorists in the West African country of Niger a few days ago. Mr. Abdullah's request to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar comes a day after Rankeet Singh's wife made a fervent appeal for his release. "Chief Minister has expressed concern over the abduction of Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Ramban, in Niger. He urges the Hon'ble EAM @DrSJaishankar and @MEAIndia to urgently intervene to secure Ranjeet's safe and swift return," Abdullah's office posted on X. Chief Minister has expressed concern over the abduction of Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Ramban, in Niger. He urges the Hon'ble EAM @DrSJaishankar and @MEAIndia to urgently intervene to secure Ranjeet's safe and swift return. — Office of Chief Minister, J&K (@CM_JnK) July 20, 2025 Sheela Devi, Rankeet's wife, on Saturday said that her husband works as a senior safety officer at Transrail Lighting Limited, an integrated power transmission and distribution company, in Niger and the family lost contact with him on July 15. According to the Indian embassy, two Indians were killed and one abducted following a terrorist attack in southwest Niger. "In a heinous terror attack on July 15 in Niger's Dosso region, two Indian nationals tragically lost their lives and one was abducted," the embassy said in a social media post on Friday. According to Niger media, unidentified gunmen attacked an army unit guarding a construction site in Dosso, about 130 kilometres from capital Niamey. "We talked on WhatsApp on July 15 and since then, I have not been able to contact him. I called his management and was initially told that there is no network at the work site," Sheela Devi said. She said she learned about her husband's abduction the next day through his friend, even as the management maintained that he had fled deep into the forest following the terror attack. "It has been four days since then. I believe that there is no effort to secure my husband's release from his captors," the mother of three children, said. She alleged that her repeated attempts to reach out to the company were being met with cold response. "I do not know what kind of situation my husband is in. I do not have any idea about the efforts of the local government," Sheela Devi said. She said she has also met Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan. "The deputy commissioner said he will do everything in his capacity, but I know the main work is that of our external affairs ministry. If they want, my husband will come home safely," she said.

Apple, Croma asked by consumer panel to refund customer's iPhone cost
A consumer panel in Mumbai asked Apple India and Croma to refund the cost of an iPhone to a customer for not being able to fix a microphone defect. According to a PTI report, earlier this month, the panel said both the manufacturer and seller are jointly liable for the defective product and should refund ₹65,264 to the customer - who is now deceased. 'Both manufacturer and seller jointly liable' Mumbai's District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ruled that the manufacturer (Apple) mentioning 'unauthorised modifications' is not a resolution to a customer's grievance. It further said that even the seller (Croma) cannot evade responsibility by simply blaming the manufacturer for the defect. The panel reportedly said it was the duty of both the seller and manufacturer to ensure the credibility of the product that was sold through them. It said the "principle of vicarious liability squarely applies", as the seller stands in a position of trust and derives commercial benefit from the sale. Grievance was not addressed On approaching Apple, the complainant was denied repairs as the company said that 'unauthorised modifications' were made on the device. Despite various attempts, neither party addressed the grievance. According to the PTI report, the complainant died while the proceedings were still ongoing. The complaint was continued by his legal heirs. Clearing stance Apple India later admitted to the issue with the microphone but reiterated that the device had unauthorised modifications because of which warranty was denied. Croma, on the other hand, failed to appear for the proceedings. The panel concluded that both the manufacturer and the seller are "jointly and severally liable for the defective product". According to the PTI report, the commission asked both the opposite parties to refund the cost of the iPhone, along with a 6 per cent interest per annum from the date of the complaint until the date of actual payment. The companies also have to pay ₹15,000 as compensation for mental agony and ₹2,000 for legal expenses.
