‘Never seen that before': Bellamy scolds Storm star for discipline issues after ‘costly' penalties
Two of those penalties involved lock Trent Loiero, who had a game to forget with four penalties conceded in total.
The last game of Magic Round was clouded in controversy following the huge call to take a likely match-winning field goal off Melbourne before Canberra won in golden point.
Ryan Papenhuzyen's 75th minute field goal was rubbed out when the Bunker pinged Loiero for foul play in the tackle right before the field goal.

Loiero's elbow made contact with Raiders skipper Joe Tapine's face that by the letter of a law is a penalty, but it's also an interaction that would happen countless times in every match.
'Ryan Papenhuyzen kicks a field goal from right in front, the referee though has his hands in the air, he wants to talk about what happened on the ground between Loiero and Tapine to see if the field goal will stand,' Warren Smith said on Fox League.
'If there was foul play here, this would take the field goal off the books.'
Referee Gerard Sutton then told Storm captain Cameron Munster: 'Trent, when he's tackled uses the elbow, he's on report and it's a penalty.'

'That's a massive call in this game,' Kevin Walters said in commentary on Fox League.
'That is absolutely stunning…. I've never seen that before,' Smith said.
'Loiero transgressed first and cost his side a seven-point lead.'
Bellamy was asked about the incident and while he said he had only seen the replay once, the Storm coach preferred to blame the discipline of his team instead of the referees, giving Loiero a bake in the process.
'I don't know who was the instigator... at the end of the day you can't be giving the ball away in those positions,' Bellamy said.
'I only had a look at it once so I'm not exactly sure what happened but to turn the ball over 15 metres from their line, if he was in the wrong, he needs to pick his discipline up.
'It's unlike anyone. You show me a bloke who gives away two players who give the ball away in the game. You're not looking at too many people. It doesn't happen often.'

Canberra went on to the game in golden point when Jamal Fogarty knocked over a penalty in front after Loiero gave away another penalty for a high shot on Hudson Young.
'It's a penalty, high contact and it's Trent Loiero again. A night to forget for the lock forward,' Smith said.
'I've got to say, that's pretty hard on Trent Loiero, very difficult, what's he meant to do there, he can't get out of the way, he's got to go in front, he lowered his contact and it was the way that Hudson Young carried the ball,' Walters said.
'You can see Trent Loiero say to the ref 'what am I meant to do there sir' but you can see the contact on the replay, we know it's a penalty.'
Munster said that while the penalties were very costly, the Storm should be focused on their own discipline.
'I can't remember the last time a team got penalised with the ball but in saying that, we played some dumb footy tonight,' the stand-in skipper said.
'As much as it looked like it was in the hands of the ref, we have to be disciplined with the ball.
'We have some learnings, but it's a tough pill to swallow. We can't afford to keep doing it.

Flemington to host 2026 Cox Plate during Moonee Valley redevelopment
Racing Victoria has officially unveiled Flemington as host of the Group 1 $6m WS Cox Plate next year. This masthead last week revealed Moonee Valley Racing Club recommended Victoria Racing Club as its preferred host for Australia's best race in 2026. The Valley will be closed after the Cox Plate this year to undergo a major redevelopment. The RV board met last week to stamp the MVRC proposal to run the Cox Plate at Flemington next year, with wagering, attendance, engagement and commercial implications central to venue considerations. The Valley principal partner Ladbrokes will maintain its naming rights sponsorship of the Cox Plate meeting at Flemington on October 24, 2026. The Melbourne Cup-qualifying Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) will also be run on the same date next year as part of a nine-race card. The historic Cox Plate race day transfer sets up a blockbuster fortnight at Flemington and tantalising springboard to the Melbourne Cup carnival – October 31 to November 7, 2026. MVRC and VRC members will have access to Flemington on Cox Plate day next year. RV chief executive Aaron Morrison announced the Flemington Cox Plate fixture. 'We believe that Flemington is the best location to maximise attendance, wagering and engagement with the meeting,' Morrison said. 'We have confidence in the VRC's ability to present a high-quality track for Ladbrokes Cox Plate day and the four-day Melbourne Cup carnival that follows. 'We thank the MVRC for their work in exploring various options for the 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate … and for tabling an informative recommendation for our board to consider and ultimately endorse.' MVRC chief executive Michael Browell welcomed the 'historic occasion'. 'The MVRC is excited that the 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate will be held at Flemington, marking a historic occasion as the first time the race has been run at a different track,' Browell said. 'The MVRC looks forward to partnering with the VRC to create an exceptional event for members of both clubs and racegoers as we showcase Australia's best race at Flemington. 'I'd also like to thank all the clubs who took part in the expression of interest process for their hard work and dedication in preparing their submissions, along with Racing Victoria for their support.' VRC chief executive Kylie Rogers echoed the sentiment. 'It is an honour for the VRC to be named as hosts of the 2026 Cox Plate at Flemington Racecourse, this will be an historic occasion,' Rogers said. 'We thank Racing Victoria, the Moonee Valley Racing Club and our commercial partners for their collaboration and can't wait to see the collective vision for a Cox Plate at Flemington come to life. 'It sets the scene for an unforgettable spring at Flemington, where the world's best come together.'

Trainers Emma-Lee, David Browne to unleash Mcgaw
Husband-and-wife training partners Emma-Lee and David Browne will now unleash Melbourne Spring Carnival challengers Mcgaw and Cup-qualified Basilinna at Caulfield at the end of the month. Mcgaw was set to resume in the Group 3 Vain Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday but a minor temperature spike derailed the Brownes' plans. The three-year-old gelding, undefeated in two starts including the $1m Showdown, has been reset towards the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 30. 'He was just a little bit dull (Friday) afternoon,' Emma-Lee Browne said. 'We checked (his temperature), it's pretty minor but we didn't want to flatten him first-up. 'It was very minor but just enough.' • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'We'll probably bring him here … use that and probably go straight into the McNeil,' Emma-Lee said. 'The trip away is almost like a jumpout for him, he works himself pretty hard.' Mcgaw has impressed in both starts, winning his maiden easily at Pakenham before claiming the $1 million VOBIS Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield back in March. 'We've been really, really, really happy with him,' Emma-Lee said. 'He's developing into a lovely strong horse. 'He's a naturally fast horse and he's still learning how to harness his speed. 'We're holding all of our balloons at the moment, hoping none of them are going to pop,' Emma-Lee said. 'It's good and the horses are coming along nicely.' Basilinna holds ballot exemption in the Melbourne Cup after the five-year-old daughter of underrated Kiwi-based staying stallion Staphanos (JPN) won the Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington back in May. Basilinna has two public hit outs under the belt with her return slated for August 30. 'The plan is for her to resume at the end of the month in a 2000 metre open handicap at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day,' Browne said. 'She's an out and out stayer, that doesn't like being bustled early so the longer distance races keep her happy. 'She's coming up really well and we're excited about what's ahead.' 'We've got a few options (to get there)' Emma-Lee said. 'We'll get through the first race but we programmed what we could fit in, with maybe the Cup being fifth-up because that seems to be when she's gone very, very well. 'It's a nice position to be in (Cup qualified) but it's still slightly nerve racking.' Group 1-placed Statuario will resume at The Valley on September 6. 'He's going super and we're a bit excited about him looking to the future,' Emma-Lee said. 'The couple of trips away last prep have brought him on mentally. 'We're planning to kick him off in the So You Think Stakes at Moonee Valley. 'Everything is on the table for him in the spring, we'll be guided by how he performs in open company.'

NBL EuroLeague tournament in Sydney cut to one day after draw change
The NBL has been forced to cancel the second day of its EuroLeague extravaganza in Sydney this September due to an 'unforeseen' draw change. Code Sports can reveal an earlier start date for the 2025/26 EuroLeague season – now September 30 – has prompted officials to call off the Monday night Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament event on September 22. Sydney Kings and Adelaide 36ers were to play a second round of games against European giants Panathinaikos BC and KK Partizan at Qudos Bank Arena. The Kings and 36ers will still take on the EuroLeague teams on the Sunday, September 21. Panathinaikos BC and KK Partizan will also kickstart the first Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament outside of Europe with a blockbuster clash against each other in Melbourne on Thursday, September 18. As a result, fans that purchased tickets can either join the PGT event on Sunday, September 21, with tickets seamlessly moved at no additional cost or opt for a full refund. 'We know how much fans look forward to these moments, so we regret any disappointment this may cause,' an NBL spokesman told Code Sports. It comes as the NBL will split John Cain Arena in two for September's EuroLeague showdown between Panathinaikos BC and KK Partizan in a bid to highlight one of biggest rivalries in world basketball. The Panathinaikos BC and KK Partizan teams are loaded with former NBA talent, headlined by gun Panathinaikos shooting guard Kendrick Nunn. Nunn – who has played 212 NBA games for Miami, LA and Washington – is the reigning EuroLeague MVP. He is currently on a three-year deal with Panathinaikos worth over $22 million as the highest paid player in EuroLeague history. The NBL is tipping a bumper crowd to fill John Cain Arena to create a unique occasion. 'We're expecting an atmosphere unlike anything Australian basketball has ever seen,' an NBL spokesman said. 'The visual of two fan bases side-by-side, each driving their team with relentless passion, will be electric. It's what makes European basketball so special, and we're thrilled to bring that to our shores.' The NBL also weighed in on separating the fans from Panathinaikos and Partizan, revealing the decision reflects the deep respect the league has for both clubs. 'It allows fans to express themselves the way they do back home,' the league said. 'Whether you're sitting on the Partizan side or the Panathinaikos side, you're going to feel part of something unforgettable. This isn't just a basketball game, it's a cultural celebration. A meeting of two of the most passionate fan bases in the world, right here in Melbourne.'
