Choosing the more intimate confines of the historic theatre was a deliberate choice for an artist who normally plays large arenas. After all, this is the star who, on the Simon & Garfunkel reunion tour in 1983, broke the existing attendance record for B.C. Place with 45,000 fans in the venue.

His website notes under the announcement for the A Quiet Celebration tour that 'Simon, who has been dealing with severe hearing loss, has chosen intimate venues with optimal acoustics for this tour.' Simon had planned to retire from music altogether after his 2018 goodbye shows, but then returned to recording and touring with the release of the Grammy-nominated 2023 album, Seven Pslams.

Beginning with the duo Simon & Garfunkel, the platinum-selling albums just kept coming. After a widely reported acrimonious break up, Simon's solo career took off with his 1972 self-titled Paul Simon. Since then, he has consistently created iconic albums, from Still Crazy After All These Years to Graceland and Stranger to Stranger. He is a rare double-inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with 16 Grammy Awards to his credit.

That legacy is one that the artist is constantly reassessing, as he told Vancouver Sun writer Neil McCormick in a September 2018 interview that ran with the headline 'But is it really over?' Even on the eve of his farewell, Simon was excited about his latest recording, In the Blue Light.

WATCH — Chappell Roan name-drops Saskatchewan in new song
Her new song, The Subway, comes out July 31 Chappell Roan might call herself the Midwest Princess, but could she be the new queen of Saskatchewan? The Grammy Award-winning pop star name-drops the Prairie province in her soon-to-be-released single, The Subway. The song is about dealing with a bad breakup. Roan sings that if she can't get over it, 'I'm moving to Saskatchewan.' Roan announced on her Instagram account Monday that the song comes out on July 31. Saskatchewanian fans — and even the mayor of the capital, Regina — say they're thrilled with the shout-out, and even want Roan to make an official tour stop in the province. 'A win for us from Saskatchewan for once,' one person commented on a teaser video for the track. Others said her first tour stop should be in Regina. The mayor of Regina, Chad Bachynski, said he was 'thrilled' about the mention. 'It's not every day that a Grammy-winning artist gives Saskatchewan a lyrical shoutout,' he told CBC Kids News in an email. 'It's a fun moment, and we welcome it with open arms.' Tourism Saskatchewan is also happy with the mention. 'We're excited to see Chappell Roan fans discovering Saskatchewan through the song,' a spokesperson told CBC Kids News. While they can't predict whether the song will lead to increased visits to the province, they said the tourism agency is 'always happy to welcome those who choose to explore Saskatchewan.' But is she really thinking about moving to the Prairies? CBC Kids News reached out to Roan and her team and have yet to hear back. So that remains a mystery! But if Roan is considering a move, she might want to learn the correct way to pronounce the province's name first. According to Bachynski, the last syllable of 'Saskatchewan' doesn't rhyme with 'gone,' as Roan sings it in The Subway. 'It's pronounced suh-SKATCH-uh-wun. Four syllables, emphasis on the second,' he said. 'We hope Chappell will come here for a show and we can teach her first-hand!'
