One Topp Cup. Two perspectives. Correspondents Francis Parker (Southern Region) and Bob Howitt (Central Otago) go at it from different angles.
The stage is set for another edition of Otago Country regional action, writes Parker.
The annual Topp Cup kicks off at Molyneux Park in Alexandra this weekend when hosts Central Otago look to take the prized heirloom off the visiting Southern Region side.
Both country competitions have been hard fought this season so far, resulting in numerous players being omitted from both sides due to injury.
The Southern Region side has had to battle with injuries and suspensions heading into this match which has seen their depth tested also.
Experienced campaigners Josh Turnbull and Ethan Hippolite lead a rugged forward pack that does have a smattering of fresh faces.
Prop Mafi Demont has had a fantastic season for Clutha and deserves a crack at the next level.
The backline will be marshalled by the Crescent duo of Joshua Cook and Harley McHardy. Clubmate and Otago Country leader Chase Owen is outside them.
McHardy adds plenty of experience in a position that was a real head-scratcher for management.
The back three of Jack Blair, Junior Meafua, and Jared Hayes boast over 25 tries this season for their respective sides.
Southern won the 2024 edition of the clash in Milton last season and, since 2014, the tie has been split five wins each with a no-result in 2020 due to Covid. The Central and Southern Development sides will face off in a curtain-raiser with the future stars on show.
Central view
Central Otago are out to regain the much-cherished Topp Cup, writes Howitt.
It is a trophy with a colourful history, dating from 1913, that gives the winning team significant bragging rights.
Of the past 10 contests, five have been won by Central and five by Southern, who finished in front at Milton 12 months ago.
"There's a terrific rivalry associated with the Topp Cup," Southern's coach Craig Hyslop said. "Retaining it is always a huge challenge."
Midfielder Chase Owen made the winning speech for Southern last year but his rival Tyler Ford, in outstanding form for Alexandra this year, will be wanting to hand out the plaudits to his team this time.
Hyslop claims it was his bench players who ultimately won the contest for his team 24-12 in windy conditions last season, super sub Kace Shaw scoring a memorable try to wrap things up late in the game.
Ford, who will play centre, will have a major impact on proceedings and will appreciate having Ben Maxwell, now with Maniototo, running the backline from first-five.
Loose forward Will Healey, in dynamic form for Alexandra after breaking his ankle last season, is another to watch.
Stalwarts of the Central team include lock Dean Sinnamon, who has scored eight tries for Matakanui Combined so far this season, fullback Doug Smith, winger Jamie Natapu, midfielder Rube Peina and No 8 Jake Burtenshaw.
Props Mike Phillips (Matakanui Combined) and William Holdom (Alexandra) will anchor the scrum.
The Central Otago starting fifteen includes five players from Wakatipu, four from Alexandra and two each from Upper Clutha, Matakanui Combined and Maniototo.
The Topp Cup contest will be preceded by a Development Squad clash between the Central and South Otago teams.

Pinkies sole Eastern champions

The Riversdale Pinkies have kept the Eastern Southland flag flying high at Hockey Southland final's day winning the division two women's title. The women in pink were the only Eastern side to win a senior final, beating Southern Masters 4-2 at the Invercargill turf on Saturday. In other finals, Eastern United Green went down 4-1 to Phoenix Orange in men's division one, Riversdale lost 5-3 in women's division one and in the division two men's match-up Phoenix won the penalty goal shootout against the Eastern United Red team after they were 2-2 at fulltime. Southern Masters started strongly against the Pinkies scoring about five minutes before the end of the first quarter. Pinkies quickly replied with a field goal by Abby Moseby. Half way through the second quarter a Lynne Grant field goal put the Pinkies ahead. Within minutes of the second half starting, Southern struck again scoring from a penalty and the score was tied 2-2. Grant then quickly scored another field goal. As the hooter scored for the end of the quarter, Maria Hansen found the back of the net from a penalty corner shot. In the last quarter, both teams attacked hard but Southern was not able to overcome the Pinkies' two-goal lead. Pinkies captain Sarah Wiegersma said she was pleased with the way the team played. "Everyone stepped up and gave everything right to the last seconds of the game." The competition had been close this season. "We knew it was going to be hard and it was. It was a good even game." She felt the Pinkies were in control of the game at 2-1 up. Goalkeeper Isabella Houghton, 14, has grown in confidence as the season progressed and had a good game, Wiegersma said. "She is the youngest in our team by a long, long way and she is there helping direct us from the back which is really good and what a goalie is supposed to do." Hansen and Beth Gray in the halves also played well. • In the division two men's final, Phoenix struck first in the second quarter from a penalty corner to be ahead 1-0 at halftime. Angus McFadzien scored for Eastern United towards the end of the third quarter. Two minutes into the last quarter Eastern's Angus Hamilton scored to take the lead but Phoenix replied not long after to draw the game. In the penalty goal shootout, Eastern's goalkeeper Theo Dynes, 15, made some excellent saves but Eastern were not able to score enough goals to win. • In the division one women's final, Riversdale were on the back foot at the start with Southern 3-0 ahead after the first quarter. Despite a never-say-die attitude the Riverside side was down 5-1 at halftime, youngster Sara Aynsley, scoring the goal. Riversdale coach Vince Aynsley's cunning plan to take goalkeeper Tessa Hewlett off the field at halftime, to give the team an extra player up front, almost worked. In the third quarter, Sonya Stewart scored a field goal and a penalty corner goal to close the gap. While Southern barely ventured out of their half in the last quarter, they absorbed the pressure to prevail. • In the division one men's match-up, Phoenix had control of the first two quarters to be up 3-0 at halftime. Eastern's William Dickey scored the team's only goal in the fourth quarter. In the division 3 mixed U16 final played at Gore on Sunday, Eastern Red beat Southern Blue 3-1.

Wynne recuperating

Southern horsewoman Samantha Wynne is recuperating in Christchurch Hospital after sustaining serious head injuries on Saturday morning. The 36-year-old had taken a team of horses to Riccarton on Saturday but cannot recall anything further after she was kicked in the head by a horse and taken to hospital where she underwent surgery for a fractured skull and badly damaged ear. "I got my ear sewed back on, they removed fragments out of the fractures and pulled a bone out of my head. They had to make sure I had no brain injuries, and I'm very lucky that I don't think I have. There is just a lot of swelling, but hopefully that will go down and the fracture will heal." — NZ Racing Desk

Central Otago team of the season

Bob Howitt names a team of the season from the Central Otago premier club competition. 15 Henry Schikker (Upper Clutha) The brand of fullback every coach wants — speedy, enterprising and a reliable tackler. 14 Conner Hamlin (Wakatipu) Possessed of blistering speed. Lightly built but fearless under the high ball. Missed the final with a serious rib injury but still finished with eight tries. 13 Tyler Ford (Alexandra) Class act at centre who guided Alex through to the semifinals again. Scored 116 points. Captained Central to a stirring victory in the Topp Cup contest. 12 Rube Peina (Wakatipu) Inspirational captain who scored 129 points, including all 23 in one contest, and contributed massively to Central's Topp Cup triumph. 11 Jack East (Upper Clutha) After three seasons playing in Victoria, Canada, took possession of the No14 jersey mid-season after a string of injuries. Scored four tries on debut and another couple of crackers in the final. 10 Ben Maxwell (Maniototo) Debut season for the Maggots after a decade starring for Cromwell. His goalkicking and general experience helped Maniototo qualify for the semifinals. 9 Ryan O'Neill (Alexandra) Tough performer whose slick passing helped Alex qualify for the semifinals. A star of the Topp Cup victory. 8 Jake Burtenshaw (Upper Clutha) Nothing between him and Wakatipu adversary Anton Huisman, but a cracking display in the final, including a try, gives it to Burtenshaw again. 7 Sam Chapman (Alexandra) Rare for a loose forward to finish the season as top try-scorer, but he managed it with 12 touchdowns. Sensational in the semifinal clash against Wakatipu. 6 Lachie Carrick (Upper Clutha) Another man-of-the-match performance against Wakatipu in the final. In a class of his own in the lineouts. 5 Dean Sinnamon (Matakanui Combined) Played most of the season as a loose forward for his club, but turned in a man-of-the-match display from lock in the Topp Cup contest. Grabbed three tries there and 11 for his club. Named Central Otago's player of the season. 4 Andrew Horne (Upper Clutha) If it wasn't Carrick stealing opponents' lineout ball on a regular basis, it was Horne. He's off to Scotland for a holiday, meaning he will miss the Otago Country matches. 3 William Holdom (Alexandra) A player with a huge engine and plenty of rugby nous. Played all 13 games for the Armadillos and starred in the Topp Cup win. 2 Scott Cunningham (Upper Clutha) Chalked up his 100th appearance in the semifinal against Maniototo and contributed plenty in the final. 1 Mike Philip (Matakanui Combined) Major contributor, along with Sinnamon, in Matakanui Combined's strong revival throughout the season. Deservedly won Topp Cup selection. Reserves: Jamie Natapu (Wakatipu), Rhys Harrold (Cromwell), Oliver Stirling (Upper Clutha), Anton Huisman (Wakatipu), Will Healey (Alexandra), Blair Kennedy (Upper Clutha), Alex Chubb (Cromwell).
