Brad Pitt reveals real life inspiration behind F1 The Movie: ‘This happened in 2008…'

Indian Express26-06-2025
F1 The Movie is just around the corner. After getting glowing reviews from critics and the press, the film will be hoping to leave a mark on the box office. Brad Pitt and director Joseph Kosinski have often talked about the extra effort they put into the movie in order for the racing sequences to look organic and real. Guided by co-producer and seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, F1 The Movie had both Pitt and Damson Idris driving the cars for real at speeds up to 180 mph. Pitt plays the character of Sonny Hayes, who is making a comeback to Formula One, but the trailers never seem to make clear the reason behind his initial departure. In a recent interview, Pitt touched on the narrative of the film and revealed the inspiration behind some of the plot points of the movie.
Pitt talked about F1 The Movie on the Beyond The Grid podcast and revealed how the 'Crashgate Scandal' of 2008 involving the Renault team was something they pulled from. The actor said, 'You know, this happened in 1994, and this happened in 2008. We were drawing from all of it. We looked a lot at – and I mean this respectfully.' He continued, 'We were a last-place team, and we needed to play with the rules. We needed to get right to the edge of the rules to be competitive in any way. And that's where Sonny starts out and is rather disliked because of it.'

The Crashgate took place during the 2008 Singapore GP when Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed his car to give his teammate Fernando Alonso an advantage. The scandal came to light when Nelson, after getting dropped from the team, revealed that he was asked to crash his car, and an investigation into the matter was carried out.
F1 The Movie has been directed by Joseph Kosinski, and the cast includes Brat Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon and Lewis Hamilton. Pitt will play the role of a veteran driver who returns to Formula One and teams up with a rookie (Idris) to save his old friend's (Bardem) team. The film also features music from aristes like Ed Sheeran, BLACKPINK, Chris Stapleton, Doja Cat and more. It releases worldwide on June 27.

McLaren Puts Unreleased Car Up For Auction In A 'First Of Its Kind' Announcement

Last Updated: McLaren boss Zak Brown opined that the auction would mark the first-ever time an unreleased F1 car has been put up for sale. In a first-of-its-kind move, Formula One side McLaren announced the auction of one of its 2026 F1 cars even before the manchine's debut on the racetrack. McLaren has put up three chassis in an action organised by RM Sotheby's, slated to be held on the 5th of December, ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. McLaren boss Zak Brown opined that the auction would be the first time a future F1 car had been sold before it had been unveiled to the public. The other two are a 2026 Arrow McLaren Indycar, set to race at the Indianapolis 500 next May by Mexican driver Pato O'Ward, and McLaren's inaugural 2027 World Endurance Hypercar, which will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The yet unnamed 2026 car will mark the team's entry into a new era of Formula One, featuring significant changes in technical and engine regulations. The successful bidder will have to wait until 2028 to take delivery, with a 2025 show car offered on lease until then. The buyer will also receive behind-the-scenes access to the team and events. The other cars will be delivered after their respective series conclude. view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 09:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Independence Day is a reminder to represent India with pride & professionalism: Pankaj Advani

For Indian billiards champion Pankaj Advani , wearing the national colours has never been just about winning medals; it's always been about responsibility and the privilege of inspiring others through his sport. On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the world champion — who will be part of the flag-hoisting ceremony at the historic Red Fort in Delhi today — reflects on what it means, as a sportsperson, to celebrate the nation's freedom and represent India on the global stage. Excerpts: 'REPRESENTING INDIA, TO ME, HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN WINNING' 'It's been 25 years now since I first wore the national flag on my chest, and it's a privilege and honour every single time,' says Pankaj. The sportsperson explains, 'When you go abroad, you're an ambassador for your country, you're carrying that responsibility in how you play, how you conduct yourself, how professional you are. You want people to say, 'India is not just good at the sport, but is professional and respectful. Every time I represent India, I'm aware it's bigger than me. It's about showing the world what we stand for: professionalism, respect, and the spirit to compete at the highest level, and that's the true essence of the sport; and Independence Day is a reminder of that.' 'People are taking up pickleball, paddle, Formula One, and even cue sports for fun, but the challenge is to connect them with the competitive side to make them watch and follow the best players in action,' he says. Today, India boasts champions across disciplines — Neeraj Chopra in javelin, PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in badminton — and Pankaj believes these athletes inspire the next generation. 'Having a figure in each sport who consistently excels on the world stage is important. But inspiration alone isn't enough; understanding the process, the training, tournaments, funding, and equipment is what truly creates more champions,' he says. Sports bring people together; it doesn't care about caste, wealth, or background. It's about testing yourself, not just against the best, but against your own limits — to win with humility and lose with grace Pankaj Advani Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). McLaren To Auction 2026 F1 Car Before It Has Been Raced

The winning bidder will have to wait until 2028 for delivery, with a 2025 show car provided on lease until then. Champions McLaren achieved a first on Thursday by announcing the auction of one of their 2026 Formula One cars before it has even been raced. The F1 car, to be driven by either Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris, is one of three future chassis offered by McLaren in the December 5 sale organised by RM Sotheby's ahead of this year's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The other two include a 2026 Arrow McLaren Indycar, which will be raced at the Indianapolis 500 next May by Mexican Pato O'Ward, and McLaren's inaugural 2027 World Endurance Hypercar that will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren Chief Executive Zak Brown stated that this would be the first time a future Formula One car has been sold before its public unveiling. The yet-to-be-named 2026 car, potentially the MCL40 following this year's MCL39, will mark the team's first in a new era of Formula One, featuring significant technical and engine regulation changes. The winning bidder will have to wait until 2028 for delivery, with a 2025 show car provided on lease until then. The buyer will also gain behind-the-scenes access to the team and events. The other cars will be delivered after their respective series conclude. McLaren, the only team to have won the 'Triple Crown' of the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and Le Mans, will aim to add to their legacy when they return to endurance racing in 2027.
