The woman was sentenced to a week in jail on July 10 after she pleaded guilty to an offence under the Official Secrets Act.
SINGAPORE – A woman entered a sexual relationship with a police inspector and loaned him $2,000 after he illegally helped her obtain information about her former husband's theft case.
The Vietnamese woman, who was undergoing divorce proceedings, had told the policeman that she wanted to share the information with her lawyer.
Tran Thi Tien, 37, who is also a Singapore permanent resident, was sentenced to a week in jail on July 10 after she pleaded guilty to
an offence under the Official Secrets Act .
At the time of the offence, Singaporean Chan Zhiyao was a senior investigation officer attached to the Special Victims Unit of Bedok Police Division.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie told the court that some time before Dec 2, 2020, Chan was assigned to investigate a case of child abuse involving Tien and her then-husband.
Without revealing details about the child abuse and theft cases, the DPP added that during an investigation, Tien told Chan that she was then undergoing divorce proceedings.
On Dec 9 that year, she told Chan that her former husband had stolen another person's mobile phone at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2016, and asked for the policeman's help to obtain information about the case.
Chan later went on a work-related computer portal, conducted an unauthorised search with the former husband's details, and obtained a report number linked to the case.
He sent Tien the report number via WhatsApp on Dec 10, 2020.
The pair's case came to light during an investigation on Chan over unrelated matters.
Investigators also found out that Tien and Chan got into a sexual relationship on or around May 25, 2022.
The court heard that she handed him the $2,000 loan on his request the following year.
Her bail was set at $10,000 on July 10, and she is expected to begin serving her sentence on July 24.
Chan, then 44,
was sentenced to a year and four months' jail in April .
The Singapore Police Force told The Straits Times in 2024 that Chan had been suspended from duties, but court documents did not state if he has left the agency.

Camel in Pakistan learns to walk with a prosthetic leg

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Cammie learning to walk on a prosthetic leg after her own was brutally chopped off by a man in June 2024, as punishment for entering his field in search of fodder. KARACHI, Pakistan - Cammie, a young camel whose front leg was chopped off by a landlord in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh, left her caregivers emotional as she walked for the first time on a prosthetic leg. 'I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true,' Ms Sheema Khan, the manager of an animal shelter in Karachi told AFP on July 20. Veterinarian Babar Hussain said it was the first time a large animal in Pakistan had received a prosthetic leg. Cammie's leg was allegedly severed by a landlord in June 2024 as punishment for entering his field in search of fodder. A video of the wounded camel that circulated on social media prompted swift government action. According to the deputy commissioner of Sanghar, the camel was transported the very next day to Karachi, over 250km away, and has been living in a shelter there ever since. 'She was terrified when she first arrived from Sanghar. We witnessed her heart-wrenching cries. She was afraid of men,' Ms Khan told AFP. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'I cannot put her condition into words,' Ms Khan added. To aid Cammie's recovery, the caregivers introduced another young female camel named Callie. Callie's presence brought comfort to the injured Cammie, who tried standing on three legs for the first time after seeing her new companion. 'Cammie had been confined to her enclosure for almost four to five months before Callie arrived,' Ms Khan added. After treating the wound and completing initial rehabilitation, the shelter – Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project – arranged a prosthetic leg from a US-based firm so she could walk on all fours again. 'We don't force her to walk. After attaching the prosthetic leg, we wait about 15 to 20 minutes. Then she stands up on her own and walks slowly,' veterinarian Mr Hussain told AFP. He said that it would take another 15 to 20 days for her to fully adjust to the new limb. The caregivers said Cammie will remain at the shelter permanently. AFP

Indonesia ferry fire kills five as hundreds rescued

Find out what's new on ST website and app. JAKARTA - An Indonesian ferry fire killed at least five people on July 20, the country's coast guard said, while more than 200 others were saved with many jumping overboard to flee the huge blaze. The KM Barcelona 5 ferry was engulfed in flames off the coast of Sulawesi island, Indonesia's Maritime Security Agency said, just weeks after at least 19 people were killed when a ferry sank off the popular resort island of Bali . 'Five people were reported dead, two of whom have yet to be identified. Meanwhile, 284 people have been evacuated safely,' the agency, also known as Bakamla, said in a statement. The fire broke out at the ferry's stern as it was on its way to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province, with some passengers jumping overboard with life jackets, the statement said. Fishermen also helped evacuate the victims to nearby islands, the statement added. Those injured were taken to the nearest health facility, Bakamla added. The accident happened about one hour away from the resort town of Likupang, in the northern tip of Sulawesi, Manado search and rescue agency head, George Leo Mercy Randang, told AFP. A video released by the Manado agency showed a Bakamla vessel spraying water on the ferry, which was still emitting thin black smoke. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Neither he nor Bakamla gave a cause for the fire. Marine accidents are a regular occurrence in the Southeast Asian archipelago of around 17,000 islands, in part due to lax safety standards or bad weather. The ferry sinking en route to Bali this month was attributed to bad weather. In March, a boat carrying 16 people capsized in rough waters off Bali, killing an Australian woman and injuring at least one other person. In 2018, more than 150 people drowned when a ferry sank in one of the world's deepest lakes on Sumatra island. AFP

Bukit Panjang LRT disruptions in July both linked to newly installed power system: SMRT

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Both incidents were linked to the newly installed Power Scada system, which is part of the ongoing LTA Power Renewal Project. SINGAPORE - Following a nearly two-hour disruption to Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) services on July 19 , transport operator SMRT said that it had concluded on-site investigations the same evening. Its investigation revealed that the power fault 'shares a similar failure mode' to an earlier three-hour long service disruption on July 3 , said Mr Lam Sheau Kai, the president of SMRT Trains, in a July 20 statement on SMRT's Facebook page. All 13 BPLRT stations were affected during both service disruptions. 'Both incidents were linked to the newly installed Power Scada system, which is part of the ongoing LTA Power Renewal Project,' he said. The Power Scada system plays a key role in monitoring and controlling power distribution across the LRT line, enhancing the safety and reliability of train operations. The BPLRT Power Renewal Project is targeted for completion by end-2026. In both incidents, a fault in the system affected the Emergency Trip System (ETS), triggering a traction power trip across the entire network. 'The LTA project team is conducting a thorough investigation, including a full design review by the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) contractor to strengthen network stability and prevent further recurrence. A key focus is ensuring that the traction power supply remains stable, especially while the system is still being commissioned,' said Mr Lam. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'We thank all affected commuters for their patience and understanding during the disruption. SMRT remains fully committed to keeping BPLRT services running safely while renewal works continue,' said Mr Lam.
