10 States, UTs outpace national inflation in Q1
India's retail inflation hit a six-year low, but state-wise data reveals significant variations. Ten states and union territories, including Kerala, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, experienced inflation rates exceeding the national average of 2.7% in the first quarter. Food, fuel, and personal care costs were key drivers, with differing state-level weights contributing to the upward bias.
Agencies India inflation numbers (Image for representation) India posted its slowest retail inflation in six years in the April-June quarter, but an analysis of the data shows a wide variance in state-wise readings, with some posting significantly faster price increases than the others.According to an ET analysis, 10 states/union territories posted faster inflation than the national average of 2.7% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Kerala, often seen as a consumption-oriented state, was at the top with a reading of 6.4%, followed by Punjab (4.7%), the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (4.4%), Uttarakhand (3.6%), Karnataka (3.5%) and Haryana (3.4%). The other states that posted faster inflation than the national average were Maharashtra (3.1%), Chhattisgarh (2.9%), Himachal Pradesh (2.9%) and Tamil Nadu (2.8%). The analysis focuses on major states and UTs with a population exceeding 5 million as per Census 2011.The key drivers of inflation across states were food products, fuel and light, and personal care and effects.
"The differing weights for states in these categories account for the upward bias," Bank of Baroda chief economist Madan Sabnavis said. These states have consistently recorded higher inflation in recent months, particularly Kerala, Punjab and the UT of J&K.

Who won the Powerball Jackpot last night, July 19, 2025? Winning numbers disclosed
The Powerball jackpot continues its upward climb after no participant secured all six winning numbers in the Saturday night draw held on July 19, 2025. The lottery's grand prize, which had reached an estimated $288 million with a lump sum cash option of $128.8 million, remains unclaimed, according to data released by Powerball officials on Sunday. The Powerball, one of the most popular lotteries in the United States, did not yield a jackpot winner in its latest draw, further intensifying anticipation for the next round scheduled on Monday, July 21. The Power Play multiplier was 3X, as per a report by IndyStar. As per the official announcement, results are still under verification to confirm the complete list of secondary winners, including those who may have matched fewer numbers but still qualify for lower-tier payouts. Live Events Breakdown of Winnings: What the Numbers Mean According to Powerball rules, a single correct match of the red Powerball number results in a $4 win. The same payout applies for matching one white ball number alongside the Powerball. Matching two white balls alone does not yield any prize. However, matching two numbers with the Powerball, or a combination of three or more white balls, increases the prize amount significantly, particularly if the Power Play option has been selected. For a detailed prize chart and payout structure, players are advised to refer to the official website: When Is the Next Drawing? Powerball draws occur thrice weekly — every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at approximately 10:59 PM ET. The next scheduled drawing, which will now feature a significantly larger jackpot, is set for Monday, July 21. If no winner emerges once again, the prize could approach the $300 million mark, further energising hopeful participants across the country. Ticket Pricing and Game Options A basic Powerball ticket is priced at $2. For an additional dollar, players can opt for the Power Play feature, which multiplies all non-jackpot winnings by a factor of 2x to 10x, except for the Match 5 prize which caps at 2x when Power Play is selected. Players can also add the Double Play option for another $1, which offers a second chance at a jackpot up to $10 million in a separate drawing. How to Play Powerball To participate, players must select five white ball numbers from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 to 26. Participants may choose their numbers manually or opt for the computer-generated "quick pick" option. Winning combinations and prize tiers vary depending on how many numbers match. The jackpot is won by matching all five white balls and the red Powerball. Prada-Kolhapuri row: Luxury giant denies GI breach in Rs 500 crore legal dispute; calls them 'simple leather sandals'
NEW DELHI: Luxury fashion house Prada has denied violating the Geographical Indication (GI) rights associated with Kolhapuri chappals, after featuring sandals inspired by traditional Indian footwear in its Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection in Milan. In response to a Rs 500 crore legal notice, Prada's legal team said it did not use the term 'Kolhapuri' or any related GI markings in the naming, marketing, or display of its sandals, ET reported. The notice was issued by LIDKAR, a government-backed body from Karnataka that co-owns the GI tag for Kolhapuri chappals. The notice claimed serious violations of GI rights, accusing Prada of "selling, advertising, marketing GI-registered goods-traditional and handmade leather sandals, granted GI tag under the name 'Kolhapuri chappals' jointly for artisans from Karnataka and Maharashtra-without proper authorisation or permission, which seriously violates GI rights of my client, which attracts civil and criminal offences". Prada's formal response dated July 9, stated the sandals were simply described as "leather sandals" and did not suggest any regional origin or adherence to traditional Kolhapuri techniques. "The sandals in question are broadly described as 'leather sandals' and there has been no suggestion, direct or indirect, that they originate from the GI-designated region or replicate the traditional Kolhapuri manufacturing technique," it said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo In a previous statement to ET on June 27, Prada had acknowledged drawing inspiration from Indian footwear but denied using the Kolhapuri name or methods. The company stated that it "acknowledges that sandals inspired by traditional Indian footwear made in specific districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka were featured in its men's 2026 Spring/Summer show in Milan". Indian GI legislation specialists said that design inspiration alone does not constitute infringement without explicit commercial use of the name or origin. "Borrowing the style without using the GI name in trade does not necessarily violate GI provisions," Priyanka Khimani, founder of an IP law firm told ET. "Unless Prada markets or sells these sandals using the word 'Kolhapuri' or implies a link to Kolhapur's craftsmanship, there is no legal recourse," Khimani added. LIDKAR authorities are currently assessing Prada's legal statement. Prada's legal representatives emphasised that the brand avoided using 'Kolhapuri' in any product-related communications. The fashion show occurred on June 22. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
