Only Fools and Horses star Sir David Jason makes 'painful' decision as he admits 'it's over now'

Daily Record07-05-2025
Only Fools and Horses legend Sir David Jason has been forced to give up a huge part of his life that he loved due to the physical pain he was experiencing.
Sir David Jason, the beloved star of Only Fools and Horses, has revealed that he's had to give up a cherished hobby due to physical discomfort. The 85-year-old actor, who earned his helicopter pilot wings back in 2005, was often seen soaring through the skies in his Robinson R44.
However, as he shared in his memoir, This Time Next Year, that he recently had to bid farewell to his chopper "with extreme reluctance", reports the Mirror.
In his book, Sir David wrote: "The fact is, you need your hips, legs and knees to be in pretty tip-top condition for helicopter flying. Also your arms and shoulders. It's rather like playing a drum kit in that regard, although the consequences of getting out of time during the second verse are quite a bit graver.
"I realised I was getting increasingly uncomfortable up there in the air. Having to push the physical part of the task was taking some of the joy out of it.
"Clearly it was time to step away while I was still capable of stepping."
A popular sight in the skies surrounding his home in recent years, Sir David even dropped in to do a spot of shopping at Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop - in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, back in 2022.
The farm features on Amazon Prime's Clarkson's Farm - which is set to retrurn for a fourth series on May 23.
One of the stars of the hit series, Kaleb Cooper, reacted to Sir David's flying visit in 2022 by posting on Instagram: "What a legend he is."
Reflecting on this significant change, Sir David expressed his pain, saying: "Flying that helicopter was a big part of my life. It was a lot of fun, obviously, but also just the most satisfying accomplishment."
In a frank chat with the Sunday Times, Sir David discussed how hip replacement surgery, which he underwent in 2023, greatly affected his mobility. He also acknowledged the inevitable impacts of ageing, admitting: "My memory isn't what it used to be."
"Most of us reach this point when things aren't quite as bright as they used to be."
Nevertheless, he remains positive, adding: "Mind you, I don't wear a hearing aid, I don't wear glasses, and I've only had to replace one bit of my body, so I'm not doing too bad."
In addition to being a keen helicopter pilot, Sir David has also been honorary vice patron of the Royal International Air Tattoo since 1999. In May 2014, he presented a cheque on behalf of the Fairford-based RAF Charitable Trust for £125,000 to the British RAF Air Cadet Organisation, to fund flight simulators for Air Cadets.

David and Victoria Beckham face fresh heartache as new details emerge of Brooklyn's vow renewal speech to wife Nicola Peltz

David and Victoria Beckham look set to face fresh heartache as new details have emerged of son Brooklyn's vow renewal speech to wife Nicola Peltz. Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family, with the Beckham clan notably absent amid their ongoing feud. His parents David, 50, and Victoria, 51, and his brothers Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and sister Harper, 14, were nowhere in sight at the second wedding, while in contrast, Nicola's family had key roles at the lavish event. And in an additional blow for the Beckham family, Brooklyn reportedly opened up on his love for the Peltz family, as well as speaking 'movingly' of his wife, as he gave his speech in front of the 200 guests. A source told The Mirror: 'He spoke from the heart - and at the centre of his heart is Nicola who he loves very dearly, but also the Peltz family who have really stuck by his side. He wanted to recognise them all, and was determined to do them all justice.' News of the 'heartfelt tribute' to billionaire Nelson Peltz, 83, and wife Claudia, 70, will no doubt add to the pain of the Beckham family amid their estrangement from Brooklyn, with it said that no such tribute was given for his own parents. Daily Mail has contacted representatives of Brooklyn, David and Victoria for comment. In addition to his immediate family, Brooklyn's grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were also absent and only found out about the wedding vow renewal by reading it online. It comes as Brooklyn is reportedly 'heartbroken' over the way his wife Nicola is being 'painted as a viper' within their ongoing family feud. Billionaire heiress Nicola has previously been accused of 'isolating' Brooklyn from not only his family, but his friends too. New sources allege Brooklyn is not being held from making his own decisions and is 'devastated' over the way his wife is being portrayed. A source told The Mirror: 'It's so rooted in misogyny that all of the heat for his parents not being invited is on Nicola. 'Everyone seems to forget that Brooklyn is an adult man and fully capable of speaking out. Nicola would have respected all that he chose. 'It breaks Brooklyn's heart to see his wife being painted as this vixen and viper.' in an additional blow for the Beckham family, Brooklyn reportedly opened up on his love for the Peltz family, as well as speaking 'movingly' of his wife, as he gave his speech in front of the 200 guests News of the 'heartfelt tribute' to billionaire Nelson Peltz, 83, and wife Claudia, 70, will no doubt add to the pain of the Beckham family amid their estrangement from Brooklyn, with it said that no such tribute was given for his own parents Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams representatives for comment. Insiders previously told Daily Mail that Brooklyn's parents are concerned his wife Nicola holds disproportionate sway in her marriage to their son. They said: 'They think Nicola is a bit of a horror but she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Nicola loves having Brooklyn at her side and she loves him very much. But he is also very useful. 'The wider Beckham family and Brooklyn's friends – many of whom he no longer sees – take the view that he does what Nicola wants. From Beckhams' point of view, it's not nice to watch.' Brooklyn and Nicola's vow renewal was a glamorous affair packed with family, fashion and friends earlier this month. As more pictures of both the big day and the after-party come to light, it is becoming increasingly more apparent that the festivities were fairly one-sided - with most of the guestlist comprising Brooklyn's post-Nicola peers and pals. The lack of Brooklyn's side sparked widespread chat on social media, including comments from fans who likened their relationship to that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - after the royal turned his back on his family and moved to the US. When Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in 2022, they hosted a three-day Palm Beach extravaganza, which saw 500 guests party in no-expense-spared marquees in front of the ocean - where both families stood front and centre . Fast- forward three years and the change is remarkable, with no sign of the Beckham parents or the siblings Brooklyn held so close to his heart. In their place is the entirety of the Peltz clan - with Nicola's mother Claudia and her father Nelson holding all-star roles on the day.
