Poilievre says Canada needs more people leaving than arriving to ease housing, job strain

Time of India5 days ago
Conservative leader
Pierre Poilievre
on Monday(July 14) said Canada needs "more people leaving than coming" for the next few years, citing a population surge that has outpaced housing and job growth under Prime Minister Mark Carney's
Liberal government
.
Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa,
Poilievre
doubled down on previous remarks made in June, where he called for 'severe limits on population growth.'
'In order to fix the problem, we've got to put very hard caps on immigration levels,' he said. 'We need more people leaving than coming for the next couple of years, so our country can actually catch up.'
The Conservative leader argued that Canada's rapid population increase, approximately 1 million new residents per year, has not been matched by infrastructure or housing development, leading to rising costs and stagnating job opportunities.
'We've had population growth of roughly a million a year under the Liberals while we barely built 200,000 homes,' he said. 'Our job market is stalled, and yet we are adding more people to the workforce.'
Live Events
A Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) report published in June estimated the country needs between 430,000 and 480,000 new housing units annually to restore affordability. Meanwhile, the latest Statistics Canada data shows the national unemployment rate stands at 6.9 percent, while youth unemployment remains high at 14.2 percent.
Poilievre also criticized the Federal government for enabling corporations to rely heavily on low-wage
temporary foreign workers
, which he claims contributes to job scarcity for Canadian youth.
While immigration spiked between 2021 and 2023, peaking at over 500,000 new permanent residents annually, recent federal measures have slightly reduced intake, including a new cap on temporary residents. Emigration, on the other hand, has quietly risen to 104,565 in 2023–2024, according to Statistics Canada.
Despite his strong rhetoric, Poilievre offered no specific policy framework or logistics for achieving a net-negative migration figure, and critics warn such a move could strain labor markets and public services further.
The comments come as Poilievre faces declining polling numbers and increasing pressure to outline a comprehensive vision ahead of the next federal election.

The great demographic heist: Illegal migration is rewriting India's future

If India were a revolving door, it would be spinning so fast that even the ghost of Gandhi might pause for breath. On one side, the country's best and brightest are leaving with passports, visas, and resignation letters in hand. On the other, a steady stream of undocumented immigrants are arriving without papers, without plans. India has the world's largest diaspora: over 35 million people. Each year, around 2.5 million Indians left the country in search of better air, better jobs, and better governance. Over 3,98,000 received official emigration clearances in 2023. Add students, startup founders, and HNW individuals relocating to Dubai condos and Canadian townhomes, and you begin to grasp the scale of the churn. Nearly 2,26,000 Indians renounced citizenship in 2022. This may seem small compared to India's 146.39 crore population, but their contribution to the economy is way disproportionate: a PRICE study says by 2030-31, the middle class and high-income segments would contribute nearly $2.7 trillion to incremental consumption. Imagine the loss from each citizen leaving town. What's causing this haemorrhage? Bad roads and worse governance. Draconian tax regimes. Courts that take decades to deliver verdicts. Public hospitals that function like holding pens. Police stations that intimidate the complainant. These emigrants aren't unpatriotic. They're just done waiting. Meanwhile illegal migration floods the informal labour market, driving down wages and increasing competition for welfare. Try questioning it, and you'll be branded as heartless, fascist, or worse.

Major Canada meat recall over Salmonella risk; over 60 salami products included across six provinces

A major recall of more than 60 salami and cacciatore meat products has been issued across six Canadian provinces due to possible salmonella contamination . The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada announced the recall on Friday, July 18, following an ongoing foodborne illness investigation by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The affected products were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The recalled items were sold in grocery stores, butcher shops, cafes, restaurants, and deli counters. Alberta reported the highest number, with 67 cases, followed by 17 in Ontario and one each in British Columbia and Manitoba. Nine people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Live Events The illnesses were reported between mid-April and late June. According to PHAC, many of those who got sick had consumed sandwiches or deli meats later confirmed to be part of the recall. List of affected brands The recall includes products from the following brands: Bona Cosmo's Smoked Meats Imperial Meats Longos Luc's European Meats Cheese & Eats Marini Salumi Naturissimo P&E Foods Rea Speziale Fine Foods Superior Meats T.J. Meats Vince's Cured Meats Corp. Some of the specific items include Rea and Bona brand Genoa salami and sweet soppressata, already recalled earlier in July. What consumers should do Health officials advise consumers not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute any of the recalled products. If you have purchased any, return them to the store or throw them out. If you're unsure whether a prepared food product, such as a sandwich, contains recalled meats, contact the place of purchase. Anyone diagnosed with salmonella or experiencing symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps should avoid preparing food for others and seek medical attention if needed. Salmonella risks and treatment Salmonella is a bacterial illness that can cause severe illness, especially in young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. It can also lead to long-term complications such as arthritis. Contaminated food may look or smell normal but still carry the bacteria. Common Food Sources of Salmonella Salmonella bacteria are most frequently found in: Raw or undercooked meat and poultry: Contamination can occur during processing or slaughter. Chicken and turkey are common carriers. Raw or undercooked eggs and egg products: Eggs can contain Salmonella either on the shell or inside before the shell forms. Unpasteurized milk and dairy products: Raw milk can harbor Salmonella if it hasn't been pasteurized. Seafood: Especially raw or harvested from contaminated waters. Fruits and vegetables: Contamination can happen through irrigation with contaminated water or contact with animal feces. Examples include sprouts, melons, lettuce, tomatoes, and spinach. Processed foods: Items such as flour and peanut butter have occasionally been linked to outbreaks due to contamination during production or storage. Pet foods: Particularly those containing raw meat, which can indirectly infect humans handling the food. Contact with infected animals: Reptiles, birds, and some pets can carry Salmonella, transmitting it to humans. Proper cooking, good hygiene, and safe food handling practices are essential to prevent Salmonella infection. The CFIA says it is working to ensure all affected products are removed from the marketplace. Due to delays in illness reporting, more cases may be reported as the investigation continues.

‘Indians Keeping Canadian Economy Afloat': Reddit Post Sparks Conflicting Opinions Online

Last Updated: A user's Reddit post claiming that Indians are keeping the Canadian economy afloat has sparked an online debate. Indians are keeping the Canadian economy afloat, a netizen claimed on Reddit, sparking an online debate about the state of the local population. In a post titled 'Huge respect to Indian Canadians", a user hailed the contribution of the Indians in the country's workforce and ultimately its economy and said that they are some of the 'hardest-working people". The user said that he was in Toronto after almost a decade and noted a 'huge upgrade". 'I was in Toronto over the last 2 weeks after almost a decade and Indians are literally keeping the Canadian economy afloat. Every single business from McDs to Walmart has Indians. Some of the friendliest and hardest-working people I've met. Huge upgrade from the states where it's a bunch of snobby high schoolers who think they're too good to put in any effort. It's clear the racism from white people is solely because they're mad because these people have just come to Canada and are out hustling them and contributing to society more than them," the Reddit post read. The user's opinion received mixed reactions from other users. Some agreed with the views, others described the situation as 'unfortunate". 'That isn't necessarily a good thing if the current unemployment of the country is high and the government/corporations are using immigration to keep wages low. Which is what is happening in Canada. Uncontrolled immigration without the resources or unwillingness to support it just leads to other problems. This isn't the immigrants faults but the fault of the government/businesses who refuse to address the issues the population is facing and instead focus on making profits," a user commented. 'It's an unfortunate situation. Like you can't blame people for wanting a better life and coming, but you can't blame Canadians for feeling like they're being screwed when they can't find jobs or housing," another said. 'It's very common for these international students to have PAID to be hired for those entry level positions. Many are exploited and work for 'cash' under the table meaning they wouldn't receive any government support if their employer caused them injury at work, as well as lesser pay per hour, and potentially longer working hours. But they do this because it's their path to PR and in many cases studying in Canada on borrowed money and loans they have to repay back home. The whole situation is rotten," a user said. 'Thanks bro I appreciate the kind words!" a netizen thanked. 'No offense OP. Clearly shows you a tourist in these parts, rather than someone working for a living in Toronto. Different ballgame. And Different opnions," another wrote, sharing the experience. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
