Rare migratory birds lure watchers to Greece's Lesbos island

Reuters16-05-2025
LESBOS, Greece, May 15 (Reuters) - Black-winged white stilts wade through a salt pan, plunging their beaks into the water in search for food at the Kalloni bay on the Greek island of Lesbos, as bird-lovers watch through binoculars from afar.
Stilts are one of more than 330 species found in the wetlands of Kalloni and elsewhere in Lesbos, which have established the island as a European hotspot for birdwatchers from around the world since the 1990s.
"We have some very special birds that are breeders on the island, like the Cinereous Bunting or the Kruper's Nuthatch, the Masked Shrike," local environmental scientist and bird guide Eleni Galinou said.
The island's main attraction are the migratory birds in spring.
Sitting at the crossroads of Africa, Europe and Asia, Lesbos gives birdwatchers the chance to see around 200 European migratory species, from crakes to pelicans, as they pause to rest and feed on their way back from Africa northwards through the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
"Many of us have always wanted to come to Lesbos because it is well-known for its migratory birds," said Ian Wordeyn, 73, one of a group of birdwatchers on the island.
"It's relaxing. When you're looking for birds and you're out in the wildlife, the countryside," said 79-year-old birder Maureen Greer.
But spotting birds involves a great deal of fortune and patience.
"You go there and wildlife is wildlife, it comes and it goes. Sometimes you're lucky, and when you are lucky that's great," Wordeyn said.

A decade after EU’s migrant crisis, hundreds still dying in Mediterranean

August 15, 2024, 2:27 a.m. A small rubber boat carrying 57 people who are trying to reach Europe from Libya is running out of fuel in the Mediterranean Sea. The passengers use a satellite phone to call an emergency hotline for migrants, but the connection drops before they can provide their location coordinates. 2:39 a.m. The passengers call back and provide a location about midway between Libya and the closest European territory, the Italian island of Lampedusa, according to Alarm Phone, the charity that runs the hotline. It has been nearly 23 hours since the passengers began their journey. They say they are tired and have not eaten since the previous morning, a timeline provided by Alarm Phone shows. 3:09 a.m. The passengers call the hotline again. Their boat has stopped, and they have no more fuel, they say. They are now adrift in the Mediterranean, a vast expanse of water where tens of thousands of migrants have disappeared over the past decade. An Alarm Phone volunteer urges the passengers to remain calm and try starting the engine again. It still won't start.

Stacey Solomon defends her £1000 a night holiday in Turkey after she's branded 'smug' and accused of blagging 'freebie' trip - as she shares stunning new family snaps

Stacey Solomon has hit back at fans accusing her of being 'smug' and blagging a 'freebie' holiday amid her luxury holiday in Turkey. The Loose Women star, 35, husband Joe Swash, 43, and their brood have just returned from a sun-soaked break to the five-star Regnum The Crown in Antalya where rooms start from around £1,000 per person per night. During their luxurious break, Stacey kept her fans updated with a plethora of fun snaps, with the presenter's most recent post featuring a carousel of stunning family images featuring her five children Zachary, 17, Leighton, 12, Rex, five, Rose, three, and Belle, two. However, Stacey's idyllic lookback on her trip has somewhat been tainted as some of her followers have hit out at her for taking such an expensive holiday, with some even suggesting that she didn't even pay for the trip and was gifted it instead. Taking to her Instagram stories, Stacey later defended her costly getaway, writing: 'This is the third time I've come back here. This wasn't a free holiday. I just love this place so much and think it deserves the BEST reviews and tags ever because it's just incredible.' In a further post, she further attempted to justify the price, remarking: 'Our happy place @regnumthecrown. This is our third year coming back here which says a lot. I have NEVER been someone who goes back to the same place every year but it's perfect for all our children and their different ages. 'Nothing compares. It is very expensive. I do think it is worth every penny and more for what it has to offer. If I knew about this place earlier I would have had our honeymoon here and special holidays here because it's just insane.' While much of the feedback from her trip had been positive, she was met with a handful of naysayers who seemingly took offence at her luxury trip. Comments on a selection of snaps during the course of her trip included: 'Did you pay for your holiday this time?' 'So another well subsidized holiday for the entire family. It makes me throw up.' 'hotel is 4 k each ,no airs n graces really tho ...' 'You planned that well meeting up with @mollymae .Was it a freebie holiday as it's massively expensive.' 'The seriously smug family.' However, plenty of Stacey's loyal fans were quick to leap to her defence as they told how she works hard and deserves her holiday. They penned: 'Imagine getting so triggered because her holiday was super expensive. She'll never win, if she went on a budget holiday something would be said. If you could afford a luxury holiday you'd do the exact same because I know I would.' 'Stacey never stops and has worked hard to get to where she is, so I think a holiday is well deserved. I for one happy for her and lovely to see such a happy family.' 'Just costed this up as I'm a Travel Agent and whilst it is spenny. We book families who aren't famous to more expensive places than this. It's what I would expect from a celebrity but there are certainly more expensive places out there for families in Europe. A lovely five star in Turkey, Stacey has done a great job and deserves a lovely place but I wouldn't say she's bragging as she could have defo gone crazier for sure.' It comes after Stacey revealed she's struck up a sweet friendship with Molly-Mae Hague after their pair met at dinner during their respective holidays to Turkey. Both the Sort Your Life Out host and the Love Island star, 26, were holidaying separately with their families at the five star Regnum The Crown in Belek this month. And Stacey took to Instagram on Sunday to gush over her newfound friendship with the star, before issuing an invitation to Molly-Mae, partner Tommy Fury, 26, and daughter Bambi, two, to visit her Pickle Cottage home. Sharing a beaming snap of herself and Molly-Mae with their arms wrapped around each other, Stacey penned: 'Got to spend the first part of our holiday with @MollyMae, @TommyFury and Bambi. Bumped into them at dinner one night and fell in love. However, plenty of Stacey's loyal fans were quick to leap to her defence as they told how she works hard and deserves her holiday. 'Genuinely the nicest, most down to earth family. And Bambi omg I can't. Just the most kind hearted little one. Rose was gutted when she left! 'Can't wait for them to come to pickle cottage.' Stacey also uploaded a snap of her son Leighton, 12, posing with Tommy and a pal as she told how her boys were 'buzzing' to meet the boxer. While Molly-Mae is yet to share her own tribute to her new pal, she did re-share Stacey's post, adding love heart and teary eye emojis.

The island where marauding goats are a bigger threat than its volcano

The hardy inhabitants of Stromboli have stuck it out for centuries, caring for their olive groves and caper plants even though their tiny island is one large, very active volcano rising out of the Mediterranean Sea. But if lava flows and flying boulders have not deterred them, a new adversary that is said to do far more damage than the volcano is persuading some residents that it is time to leave. 'My family has been here since the 17th century, but if the goats continue to multiply I'm abandoning Stromboli,' said Gianluca Giuffre, a local shopkeeper. Stromboli is the latest island in the Aeolian chain north of Sicily where man is facing off against wild goats, and the goats are winning. As on neighbouring Alicudi , an expanding army of animals on Stromboli is devouring vegetation, reducing ancient stone terracing to rubble, entering homes and even attacking people.
