Dorange becomes youngest sailor to complete Vendee Globe at 23

Reuters09-02-2025

Feb 9 (Reuters) - At 23-years-old, Violette Dorange became the youngest sailor to finish the Vendee Globe after completing the gruelling solo round-the-world yacht race on Sunday.
Dorange completed the race in 25th place after 90 days, 22 hours and 37 minutes at sea and overcame the record set in 2016 by the previous youngest-ever finisher Alan Roura, who had completed the 2016-17 race after 105 days.
"Her accomplishment comes some 24 years after the second place of the legendary British sailor Ellen MacArthur, then aged 24, who completed her race in 94 days, four hours and 25 minutes," the Vendee Globe said in a statement.
The Frenchwoman was ranked 14th in the 2024 IMOCA championship, a series of elite offshore races featuring cutting-edge 60-foot yachts.

Liverpool are set to smash the British transfer record this summer after reaching an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over the signing Florian Wirtz. The German international, 22, is set to jet into Merseyside this week in order to complete a medical after the two clubs came to an agreement over the transfer of the highly-rated midfielder, with an initial fee of €135 million (£113 million) set for Wirtz, though add-ons mean the total fee could potentially reach €150 million (£127.5 million) if triggered. FC Köln in January 2020, paying just €200,000 (£170,000) for the-then 16-year-old. Going on to make his debut just a few short months later, Wirtz played an instrumental role in the club's 2023/24 campaign that saw them win a domestic double of the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, without losing a single game. Leverkusen also reached the UEFA Europa League final that year but lost to Atalanta, in their only defeat of the campaign. Officially, the German international has not yet completed his move to Liverpool - but the deal is very close, as per a new report from Fabrizio Romano. The Italian transfer guru wrote on his official X account: 'Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, HERE WE GO! Liverpool verbally agree deal in principle with Bayer Leverkusen for package reaching €150m add-ons included. Player side already agreed two weeks ago with move now imminent. Wirtz set for medical and contract signing.' Florian Wirtz stats 2024/25 The German starlet was one of the Bundesliga's top performers once again last season, scoring 10 goals and assisted a further 12 for Bayer Leverkusen. His average of 0.84 goals or assists per 90 minutes was one of the best in the division. From his 50 shots taken in the season, a total of 35 of them hit the target, and resulted in a goal every five attempts. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad How much will Florian Wirtz earn at Liverpool? The 22-year-old's megabucks move to Merseyside will see his wage increase significantly, where he'll become on of the highest paid players in the English Premier League. According to Capology, he earns a weekly wage of £73,000 at Bayer Leverkusen. However, this will be tripled if he completes a move to Liverpool this month, with respected German sport outlet Bild claiming the German international will see his weekly wage increase to around £325,000 - £355,000 per week (£16.8million–£18.5 million per year). This would make Wirtz one of the highest paid players at the club, likely second only to Mohamed Salah (reportedly £400,000 per week). Some reports claim he could earn ever more than that, based on potential bonuses. What number will Florian Wirtz wear at Liverpool? There was suggestions that the Bayer Leverkusen star had 'demanded' the number 10 shirt at Anfield, which is currently worn by Alexis MacAllister. This, however, proved to be wholly inaccurate, with Wirtz himself taking to social media to dispel these rumours last week. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

Oleksandr Usyk makes retirement admission before Daniel Dubois fight

The Ukrainian has not fought since beating Tyson Fury for a second time last September and is set to return to the ring next month against Dubois Oleksandr Usyk has admitted he thinks about retirement but is targeting a stadium fight in his beloved Ukraine before hanging up the gloves for good. It is fair to say that the heavyweight star is is edging closer to the end of his career as he prepares to take on Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley Stadium. Usyk - who holds the WBA, WBO and WBC belts - will put them on the line against 'Triple D' - the IBF champion - in the first ever four-belt heavyweight unification on British soil. ‌ The pair have already met before when Usyk went on to stop Dubois in the ninth round back in 2023. However, the fight was not without drama. Just before the midway point, the Ukrainian was sent crashing to the canvas due to a shot to the body. That said, it was later deemed a low blow - much to the frustration of Dubois. ‌ With just over a month to go until the contest, Usyk is currently preparing over in Spain. While he is giving it his all in training, the 38-year-old is thinking about life after boxing. He told The Ring: 'I don't think about retirement much but I do think about it sometimes. I cannot say now how many fights I've got left. 'Right now, my dream continues but I'm very grateful for my family and my team who are with me… But I still want to fight at the Olympic stadium in Kyiv. Now I have no idea who that would be against.' Next month's fight will be his first fight at Wembley Stadium. The 38-year-old admits it was always a dream of his to fight in a big stadium like Wembley. 'When I was young or at the start of my career I used to dream about boxing in a big stadium like Wembley or Tottenham,' he added. 'Now it's real. I boxed in a big stadium against Anthony Joshua and it was great, a big fight. But I don't visualise the fight now. My focus is just training, my rest. I'm not visualising the fight because when I go to London, when I step in the ring, OK I'll start. Now there's no need for it.' On the topic of the low blow incident two years ago, the Ukrainian is adamant that it was a 'dirty punch,' but is now solely focused on the task at hand on July 19. 'It doesn't frustrate me because I think it's rubbish,' he said. 'It's trash talk, it's rubbish. For me it doesn't matter because I know it was a dirty punch - now for me it's in the past. I live today in the present.' Ahead of the rematch, the two teams have already come to blows after Dubois' trainer Don Charles sensationally questioned Usyk's faith in God after accusing him of 'conning the boxing world' during the pair's 2023 bout in Poland. 'The actions you did that night, you've heard of the Oscars? You should've won an Oscar,' Charles told a press conference in April. 'You conned the referee, you conned us and you conned the boxing world. You pride yourself as a God-fearing man – 'Thou shalt not lie' – so I question what kind of God do you worship? The God has summoned you for our son Daniel Dubois to get revenge on you.'

Carl Spackler in great shape with Ascot approaching

Now with Australian handler Ciaron Maher, Carl Spackler will make his yard debut in the opening event of the Royal meeting, with William Bourne, Maher's bloodstock manager, acknowledging the course as a key obstacle for the Lope De Vega horse to overcome. Queen Anne Stakes preparations complete for Carl Spackler — Adam Morgan (@Adam_Morgs) June 11, 2025 He said: 'I would say his biggest challenge is the conditions and the track. A stiff mile at Ascot is probably the biggest ask coming from America, I think that will be his biggest challenge in handling that. 'It would be amazing (to win). It's pretty unique to purchase a horse in America, to be trained by an Australian and run at Royal Ascot, but the long-term plan is to bring him out for the Cox Plate, so we'd be thrilled to get this on the way through.' Carl Spackler was put through his paces on Newmarket's July course on Wednesday morning, with Jamie Spencer in the saddle, although top Australian jockey James McDonald will be in the plate on Tuesday. Bourne said: 'We came here wanting to have a hit out. That's his second gallop since he's been here in Newmarket, he came in with good condition, a very healthy horse from Chad Brown and after the feedback from Jamie Spencer on his first gallop, he needed a good hit out so coming here today, he got that and that's exactly what we wanted to achieve. 'He's done it really nicely and Jamie said when he gave him a little squeeze late on, he really exploded and he was pretty impressed by how much he'd switched on from his first to his second gallop. It's obviously not an easy task for us, but the horse looks fit and well.' McDonald is no stranger to Royal Ascot success, having ridden three winners at the fixture in 2022, and has enjoyed plenty of big-race wins for Yulong, not least with ex-British runner Via Sistina who he has steered to six Group One wins since her transfer to Australia. James McDonald was an Ascot winner aboard Nature Strip in 2022 (David Davies/PA) Bourne said: 'James is great, obviously he's had a lot of luck with the colours on with Via Sistina and he's had winners at Royal Ascot before. He's a great fit for the owners, they wanted him and it's a great to have a world-class jockey on your horse in a Group One. 'He's Yulong's main rider in Australia and if 'J-Mac' was available, we were very happy to use him. 'James is happy to come over and ride the horse, I was chatting to him last week, he's watched his tapes and is getting very excited about the horse. He didn't know who he was and I got a very bland response, but after watching the tapes and having a look at the horse, he's very excited and upbeat.' Winner of eight of his 12 starts in America, although Carl Spackler has the Cox Plate, Australia's premier weight-for-age race, firmly on his agenda in the autumn, should he run well at Ascot, he might yet have a second British start. Bourne added: 'We'll play it by ear, we're going to look at Goodwood as an option but his ultimate goal will be the Cox Plate, so we will see how he runs on Tuesday and go from there. He's obviously a quality horse and there will be plenty of options for him.'
