More than 20 dogs dumped; rescue in need of donations

WEBSTER, La. (KTAL/KMSS) —On Sunday, deputies from Webster Parish and animal control officers spent several hours rounding up more than two dozen dogs that were allegedly dumped by unknown individuals south of Doyline.
Sheriff Jason Parker reported that the dogs, of various sizes and ages. The animal shelter that took them in says they are suffering from Parvo and need donations.
'We managed to find all but four or five, but we haven't given up on catching those that remain in that area,' Parker said. 'We're still looking. We don't want them running loose and perhaps causing a nuisance.'
While the identity of the individual or individuals who abandoned the animals remains unknown, Parker stated that an investigation has been initiated and will proceed.
'Those animals had to have been delivered in something large like a horse trailer or something similar,' he said. 'We're looking for anyone who may have seen something Sunday. This is completely unacceptable, and we want to find those who are responsible.'
Lost dogs have fueled the overpopulation crisis in US animal shelters
Sheriff Parker believes the individuals who turned loose such a large number of dogs are from this area.
The dogs were taken to nonprofit, LaMa Animal Rescue, and Rocking Rooster Veterinary Services in Minden for treatment. LaMa Animal Rescue details that the four young puppies have Parvo, and the other adult dogs will be quarantined and receive care/spray/neuter at Rocking Rooster.
'One of our concerns was the health of the animals, and we delivered them to a vet who helps us when needed. It's good that the rescue group will see to it they're fed and housed until something positive can be done.'
Clear the Shelter
'All the poodles/doodles are extremely matted. We are aware that there are still five adult dogs in the area that could not be caught (pic in comments). Webster Sheriff is aware of this and several dog lovers near the area are trying to gain their trust,' said the animal rescue.
LaMa Animal Rescue is asking for donations to help take care of the Doodles and Aussies. They said one of the dogs is pregnant and the one was returned to their owner – she had been missing for three weeks.
If any of these doodles or Aussies belong to you, whether stolen or lost, contact us at lamaanimalrescue@gmail.com. or call Rocking Rooster at 318-382-1400. The rescue recommends callers say 'it's for the LaMa puppies.'
LaMa Animal Rescue encourages anyone with information regarding the LaMa puppies' origins to please reach out.

Colorado personal trainer convicted of sexual assault of a child

A personal trainer in Colorado was convicted by a jury last week of multiple charges related to sexual assault of minors who were athletes at his Parker gym. In 2022, Parker police arrested personal trainer Aaron Carrado for sexually assaulting one of the kids he was training. At the time, they were looking for other possible victims. On Thursday, a jury found him guilty of 12 charges, including six counts of "sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust as a pattern of abuse." Danielle Jaramillo, chief deputy district attorney of the family violence unit in Colorado's 23rd Judicial District, says it was the courage of Carrado's victims that put him behind bars. "I was super relieved for these victims," Jaramillo said. "I felt like- they felt that their voices were really heard, so I was really, really relieved for them and for the community." Jaramillo says when she went to trial in the case against Carrado, getting a conviction was important to her. "The concern was that he would get right back out in the public, feel emboldened with what he did, felt like no one cared enough to convict him of that," she said. "I think (acquittals) really emboldened sex offenders to believe that what they did wasn't wrong, and that it's okay to continue to do things like that." In 2022, Carrado was charged with four counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, four counts of unlawful sexual contact, and two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Police alleged that he assaulted teen athletes he was supposed to be training at his gym, "Strength in Christ," among other locations. His now ex-wife says she found a phone with explicit messages between him and his young clients. She's the one who turned him in to law enforcement. Carrado then fled to Montana. Jarmillo says the evidence Carrado's ex-wife provided helped bolster the case against him. "We had DNA testing done, we had a lot of forensic analysis done on different phones that we received, both from the defendant as well as from the victim," she said. But Jaramillo says she thinks it was the courage of his victims, who are now adults, that swayed the jury and led to Carrado's conviction: "They just did an incredible job on the witness stand." Carrado is now facing 8 years to life in prison. He's 51 now, and Jaramillo says she would want a sentence that keeps him in jail for the rest of his life. Ultimately, however, his fate lies in the hands of a judge. Carrado will be sentenced on Nov. 13.

Police rescue two dogs abandoned by side of road near Colorado elementary school

Police in one Colorado community are searching for answers after two neglected dogs were abandoned on the side of the road this week. According to the Parker Police Department, a man abandoned them near the parking lot of Pioneer Elementary off of Riva Ridge around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Authorities said neither the female adult dog nor the six-month-old puppy is microchipped, and both showed signs of neglect. They said both dogs are currently being cared for at a shelter. Police are looking for the owner, who they said is a middle-aged white man driving a white pickup truck with a topper. The police department hopes someone might have information, dash camera footage or doorbell footage that may help them identify the owner. They asked anyone with information on the case to contact Parker Police Community Services Officer Jacob Gingold at jgingold@ or 303-805-6851.

MP Rupert Lowe admits mistaking charity rowing crew for ‘illegal migrants'

Independent MP Rupert Lowe has admitted mistaking a charity rowing crew for 'illegal migrants'. Mr Lowe, who was elected as a Reform UK MP but now sits as an Independent in Great Yarmouth, had posted a picture on social media on Thursday night showing a boat near some wind turbines off the Norfolk coast. The Coastguard contacted the crew to confirm their identity and Mr Lowe has since promised to donate £1,000 to their charity after admitting his mistake. The MP posted on social media on Friday morning: 'Good news. False alarm! The unknown vessel was charity rowers, thank goodness. 'As a well done to the crew, I'll donate £1,000 to their charity – raising money for MND. 'Keep going, and watch out for any real illegal migrants! 'We received a huge number of urgent complaints from constituents – I make no apologies over being vigilant for my constituents. It is a national crisis. 'No mass deportations for the charity rowers, but we definitely need it for the illegal migrants!' Mr Lowe had originally posted on social media on Thursday night: 'Dinghies coming into Great Yarmouth, RIGHT NOW. 'Authorities alerted, and I am urgently chasing. If these are illegal migrants, I will be using every tool at my disposal to ensure these individuals are deported.' But the vessel pictured was in fact an ocean rowing boat crewed by ROW4MND, a team of four who are attempting to row from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND). The crew – Matthew Parker, Mike Bates, Aaron Kneebone and Liz Wardley – said they had been contacted by the Coastguard and asked if they could see a dinghy nearby. Mr Bates, a former Royal Marine and British record holder for rowing across the Atlantic solo, told the PA news agency it soon became clear the Coastguard was asking about his own boat. 'I looked to my right and there was maybe a dozen individuals stood on the shoreline staring at us,' he said. After satisfying the Coastguard that their boat was not carrying migrants, they continued, but several hours later were contacted again by the Coastguard because the police had 'asked if they could send a lifeboat out to check who we were'. Eventually, a friend forwarded Mr Lowe's post, which Mr Bates said provided 'a moment of light relief'. He said: 'We found it hilarious. I've not been mistaken for a migrant before. 'The best comment was the one asking where the Royal Navy were when you need them. I'm a former Royal Marine, so the Royal Navy were on the boat.' He added: 'But it was almost like a vigilante-style, people following us down the beach. 'They hadn't twigged that we were parallel to the shore for hours and not trying to land.' The quartet set off from Land's End on July 25 and initially headed north into the Irish Sea before bad weather forced them to stop at Milford Haven in Wales. They then decided to return to Land's End and start again, this time heading in the other direction, which Mr Bates said had been 'about us showing resolve and resilience and hope'. The journey is the first of four challenges over four years, with the group aiming to row from John O'Groats to Land's End next year, from California to Hawaii in 2027 and New York to London in 2028, with a target of raising £57 million for MND research. So far, they have raised £107,515 for the charity. Mr Bates said: 'We're rowing for hope, we're rowing to find a cure, and hopefully we'll raise £57 million – we certainly will if MPs keep talking about us. Maybe Rupert will give us a donation.'
