Trump assassination attempt: 5 major questions still unanswered in 2025

Hindustan Times6 days ago
Donald Trump was shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, while he was running for president last year. Right after a bullet grazed his ear, he threw his fist in the air and yelled, 'Fight! Fight! Fight!' Meanwhile, the crowd rallied behind him. Trump later said that God had saved his life, and he went on to win the election in November, according to a Newsweek report. The FBI and Secret Service both said Crooks acted alone. Still, there are theories that someone else was involved in the assassination of Donald Trump. (Getty Images via AFP)
The shooter was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. People at the rally noticed him acting weird outside and told security, although no one stopped him before he climbed onto a roof and started shooting. Crooks killed one person in the crowd and hurt two others; however, Secret Service agents shot and killed him.
The attack exposed serious security problems. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned, and a review panel said the agency needed 'fundamental reform.' But a year later, many questions about Crooks still remain unanswered.
Why did he do it?
The FBI checked Crooks' phone, computer, house, and car. But they still don't know why he opened fire.
He didn't leave any kind of letter or statement, and his online activity was low. He had no criminal history, and he was doing well in school. The New York Times said he had a perfect SAT score and was studying engineering.
Crooks' political views weren't clear either. He signed up as a Republican when he turned 18, but he had once donated $15 to a Democrat-backed group. In the month before the shooting, he searched online a lot about Trump and Joe Biden.
The Times got records showing he signed up for the Trump rally a week before the shooting and had searched 'How far was Oswald from Kennedy?'
Was he working with someone?
The FBI and Secret Service both said Crooks acted alone. Still, there are theories that someone else was involved.
Private investigator Doug Hagmann told the New York Post in February that his team found devices linked to Crooks—ones that didn't belong to him—at his house, school, and other places.
'We don't think he acted alone,' Hagmann said. 'This took a lot of coordination. In my view, Crooks was handled by more than one individual and he was used for this.'
Was he planning more?
There's some evidence Crooks had bigger plans. The Times said police found a basic homemade bomb in his room. They also found bomb-making stuff at his house and explosive devices in his car.
CBS News reported Crooks tried to buy more than two gallons of nitromethane, which is a chemical used in explosives.
Why was he cremated so fast?
The FBI has been slammed for how quickly they released Crooks' body.
Rep. Clay Higgins from Louisiana said letting the family cremate the body just 10 days after the shooting could be seen as 'obstruction to any following investigative effort.'
The FBI pushed back, saying that was 'inaccurate and unfounded.' They said they worked with the coroner and local police before handing over the body.
'Nothing was rushed and everything was documented as part of the investigation,' the FBI said.
What about his family?
Crooks' parents haven't talked to the media. They've stayed quiet. Not much is known about his home life or background.

How close were Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein? 5 key questions about their ties

Several claims have been made about US President Donald Trump's connection with accused sex offender Jefferey Epstein. Earlier, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that Trump was named in the unreleased 'Epstein files, but later said he "had gone too far." Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported on an alleged birthday greeting by the president for Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. According to the Journal, the Trump letter was "bawdy". It reportedly contained the outline of a naked woman, apparently drawn with a marker, and had the future president's signature "Donald" mimicking pubic hair. It ends with "Happy Birthday -- and may every day be another wonderful secret," the WSJ claimed. Trump called the letter "fake" and reacted in a series of furious social media posts, saying "it's not my language. It's not my words." "I never wrote a picture in my life. I don't draw pictures of women," he said. Following this, the US Justice Department requested a federal court to unseal secret documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein's case. The Trump administration made the request late on Friday, asking that grand jury transcripts pertaining to the case be made public.' Besides, several unverified videos and pictures of Trump with Epstein have surfaced on social media. What do we know about Trump and Epstein's relationship? Here 5 key questions to raise: There are conflicting signals on this, CNN reported. Trump had distanced himself from Epstein after the latter was arrested and charged with sex trafficking of minors in 2019. Trump had said during his first term, "Well, I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him...I mean, people in Palm Beach knew him. He was a fixture in Palm Beach." Trump claimed, "I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don't think I've spoken to him for 15 years. I wasn't a fan.' Later, the Washington Post backed Trump's claim, saying that the two men had a falling-out while competing over the same Palm Beach oceanfront property in 2004. But, according to CNN, Trump's suggestion that his relationship with Epstein was more incidental and his claim that he 'was not a fan' of Epstein's has been called into question, including by Trump's own commentary. Their relationship appeared to date back to the 1980s. Trump flew on Epstein's jets between Palm Beach and New York, according to flight logs. They socialised at each other's properties. But in January 2024, Trump said on social media: 'I was never on Epstein's Plane...' In fact, flight logs had already shown Trump flew on it seven times in the 1990s. Most infamously, Trump in 2002 told New York magazine that Epstein was a 'terrific guy.' He had reportedly said, 'He's a lot of fun to be is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.' Precisely how close Trump and Epstein were isn't totally clear, CNN reported. "Was this just a situation of powerful men occasionally partying together and sharing Epstein's private plane because that's what rich guys do?," it added. It's believed the idea that Trump would submit a letter for Epstein's birthday album isn't that surprising, given this was when the two of them were seemingly on better terms (2003). The idea that Trump would be lewd in that letter also tracks, given his past, CNN reported. The 'Access Hollywood' recording of Donald Trump bragging about 'grabbing women" had surfaced in 2016. But a Trump ally said this doesn't sound like him or something he would create. Influencer Laura Loomer defended Trump, posting on X, 'Everyone who actually KNOWS President Trump knows he doesn't type letters. He writes notes in big black Sharpie." Moreover, while Trump claims he doesn't draw pictures, his drawings have surfaced before. US media have published multiple drawings done by Trump in the past, with several dating to the early 2000s when he used his celebrity status to donate sketches for charity. While these don't prove that Trump wrote this letter to Epstein and drew the accompanying picture. But again, Trump is undercutting his own credibility, CNN reported. Some have suspected that Trump's name could be in the files his administration has failed to produce, given his efforts to quiet chatter about Epstein. Merely being named wouldn't mean Trump had done anything wrong. But it could create political headaches — as the fallout from the Journal story shows — and as demonstrated by Trump's very public reluctance to release more documents, CNN reported. Trump was asked Tuesday if Attorney General Pam Bondi had told him his name was in the files, and he didn't directly answer. 'She's given us just a very quick briefing in terms of the credibility of the different things that they've seen,' Trump was quoted as saying. Trump's 2002 comment about Epstein's taste for women 'on the younger side' loomed over him, furthering theories that he might have known something about what Epstein had been up to. But that remains speculative and unproven. Trump also said nothing about underage girls; he cited young 'women.' CNN cited former Trump aide Sam Nunberg's 2019 account to the Washington Post. According to that, Trump had said he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago because of misconduct. 'He's a real creep, I banned him,' Nunberg said Trump had told him. Nunberg reportedly quoted Trump as saying that he did so because Epstein had recruited a young woman who worked there to give him massages. "This was years before the Epstein investigation became public knowledge," according to the Post. Multiple reports, including a 2020 book by reporters for the Miami Herald and Wall Street Journal, have linked Epstein's ban from Mar-a-Lago to alleged overtures to the teenage daughter of a Mar-a-Lago member. In 2019, while Trump quickly distanced himself from Epstein, his commentary the following year after Maxwell was charged was different — and somewhat bizarre. 'But I wish her well, whatever it is,' Trump told reporters in late July 2020. Despite significant criticism of that — wishing an accused (and later-convicted) child sex trafficker well — Trump a couple weeks later doubled and tripled down when pressed by then-Axios reporter Jonathan Swan on how odd that sounded, CNN reported. 'Yeah, I wish her well,' Trump told Swan. 'I'd wish you well. I'd wish a lot of people well. Good luck. Let them prove somebody was guilty.' Trump added, when pressed again: 'I do wish her well. I'm not looking for anything bad for her. I'm not looking bad for anybody.'

US targets Mexican flights, threatens Delta-Aeromexico alliance in trade dispute

The Trump administration on Saturday announced plans to take action against Mexico following the Mexican government's move to cut flight slots and relocate cargo carriers from Mexico City's main airport, steps that US officials say unfairly impact American Secretary Sean Duffy warned that the US Department of Transportation may begin disapproving Mexican flight requests unless the country addresses concerns stemming from decisions made in 2022 and response to what it calls unfair treatment of US airlines, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to impose stricter controls on Mexican flights and is considering terminating the antitrust immunity granted to the joint venture between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico. "By restricting slots and mandating that all-cargo operations move out of MEX, Mexico has broken its promise, disrupted the market, and left American businesses holding the bag for millions in increased costs," Duffy said Mexico's decision to cut flight slots and force cargo airlines to relocate operations from the overcrowded Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) to the more remote Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) violates the bilateral air services agreement between the two argued these actions favored Mexican carriers and placed US airlines at a disadvantage. 'Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg deliberately allowed Mexico to break our bilateral aviation agreement,' Duffy said, blaming the previous administration. 'That ends today. America First means standing up for fair treatment of US airlines and workers.'As part of the new measures, all Mexican airlines must now submit their US flight schedules for DOT approval. Charter flights to and from the US will also face tighter DOT also moved to revoke antitrust immunity for the Delta-Aeromexico joint venture, which has operated since 2016, enabling the two airlines to coordinate pricing, capacity, and Delta would retain its equity stake in Aeromexico, it would lose the ability to collaborate on revenue sharing and flight and Aeromexico criticised the proposal, saying it would harm consumers and hurt both economies by reducing connectivity and airlines warned that ending the partnership could result in the loss of 23 routes, over USD 800 million in economic benefits, and discourage nearly 230,000 travelers from visiting the neighboring is reviewing the order and said it plans to issue a joint response with Delta in the coming days. The DOT's decision to revoke approval would not take effect until October, giving the airlines time to contest it flight relocation controversy traces back to decisions made in 2022 and 2023 under then-President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador, who claimed the shift to AIFA was necessary to reduce congestion at DOT also signaled it could take similar action against European nations over airport access limitations, highlighting a broader push to defend US airline interests globally. Mexico's government and President Claudia Sheinbaum have yet to respond to the new measures.- EndsWith inputs from agenciesTune InMust Watch

From Pahalgam Terror Attack To Bihars Voter Roll Revision: What's On INDIA Bloc's Monsoon Session Agenda?

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) held a virtual meeting on Saturday to discuss the key issues that would be raised in the Monsoon session of the parliament, which is scheduled to begin from Monday (July 21). The meeting was attended by leaders and representatives of the bloc parties. INDIA Bloc Virtual Meeting The attendees of the INDIA bloc virtual meet included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Senior Leader Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. Other leaders who attended the meeting were: Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), Ramgopal Yadav (Samajwadi Party), D Raja (CPI), and Tiruchi Siva (DMK). Briefing reporters on the meeting, Congress leader and Deputy LoP in Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari said, 'The meeting discussed issues related to the people of the country that we will raise during the monsoon session.' Here are the key points the INDIA bloc intends to raise in Parliament's Monsoon Session: 1- Pahalgam And Operation Sindoor He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should respond to the concerns of members about the Pahalgam terror attack and their queries concerning Operation Sindoor. The Indian Armed Forces had launched precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) during the wee hours of May 7 to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack. India subsequently repelled subsequent Pakistani aggression and pounded its airbases. New Delhi and Islamabad had agreed to a ceasefire after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called his Indian counterpart. 2- Trump's Ceasefire Mediation Claims Tiwari also referred to repeated remarks of US President Donald Trump about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He emphasised that the members expressed concern over the repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump that he mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He said Trump has so far made the claims 24 times. 3- Bihar Voter Roll Revision The Congress leader also said that the INDIA parties expressed their concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar. He said it was felt that there was an undeclared Emergency during which voters' names were being removed from the list. 4- Centre's Foreign Policy He said that the government's foreign policy stances require a lot of answers, and there was concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. 'Where is the Prime Minister's leadership on Pakistan, China, and Gaza? If we treat these as key national issues, the PM must answer in Parliament,' he said, as per IANS. 5- Air India Ahmedabad Plane Crash "We will also seek answers on many other important issues, including the Ahmedabad plane accident," Tiwari added. 6- According to the Congress Leader, other issues that the INDIA bloc plans to raise in the Monsoon session include delimitation, atrocities on Dalits, STs, and women. He added that a physical meeting of the INDIA group will also be held shortly. Tiwari said opposition parties want the Parliament to work smoothly, and the government should answer their concerns. Bills On Mosoon Session's Agenda As per ANI, the bills on the agenda of the government include: Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill of 2025, Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill of 2025, Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill 2025, the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill 2025, the Mines and Mines (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill 2025, the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill 2025. The agenda of the government also includes the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024, the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, and the Income Tax Bill, 2025.
