New Notre Dame forward Carson Towt already making his presence felt on the hardwood
After a tough first two seasons under head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Fighting Irish went into the transfer portal to bring in the power forward from Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference to help replace the loss of Tae Davis to Oklahoma.
The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Towt was a rebounding machine with the Lumberjacks and has already impressed on the court this summer in South Bend. He was the nation's leading rebounder last season at 12.4 per game, including 3.5 on the offensive glass. Towt was a late bloomer, as he excelled as a high school guard until a growth spurt.He walked on at NAU and increased his size while getting comfortable in his new frame, and his numbers went from 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman to 13.3 points and the nation-leading 12.4 rebounds in 2024-25 while connecting on 53.1 percent of his field goals.
Towt chose Notre Dame over Baylor, Iowa, Xavier and Washington State. He has been compared to former Irish great Luke Harangody.
If he can be even half as efficient as Harangody, the Irish made a shrewd move in the portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2025 season outside of the top 25 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It's an unfamiliar situation for one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. The defense should be solid, and if new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle can turn things around, the Sooners might be a sleeper. But this is a team that's made a lot of changes to the personnel for an offense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season. The hope is that Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer can at least return the offense to respectability. With Brent Venables calling the defense, one that figures to be really good again in 2025, the Sooners' offense doesn't have to score 40 or 50 points per game to be successful. And that should be encouraging for Oklahoma. Even though the metrics say the schedule is difficult this year, the reality is that the Sooners are significantly improved on paper and should be better prepared to play every team on their slate. Oklahoma may be considered a long shot due to what happened in 2024 or the schedule, but they're actually closer to a playoff team than many are willing to admit. UNC football's new DC details Bill Belichick's continued passion, decision to coach UNC
Will the Bill-Steve Belichick duo work in Chapel Hill? Most of the preseason chatter surrounding UNC football involves new head coach Bill Belichick, who enters his first collegiate season after an illustrious NFL career, highlighted by eight Super Bowl titles. There's another big name on the Tar Heels' 2025 coaching staff, someone closely related to Chapel Bill, who doesn't get talked about enough. Steve Belichick, Bill's oldest son, will be North Carolina's new defensive coordinator. During media availability on Wednesday afternoon, Steve spoke on what it means to be coaching with dad again. 'I took all the credit for him being in college," Steve joked. "That's all me. I just think that for my dad, he loves coaching football. That's his passion. This opportunity presented itself, I don't know how it all went down, but I was as surprised as everybody else to hear 'Hey, I'm going to North Carolina.' It was definitely a little interesting when that happened, but he just loves to coach football, loves to develop players, loves to be around the game. It's been that way my whole life and it hasn't changed yet." Steve has a proven track record of defensive success, leading stellar units at each of his past stops. In 2024 at Washington, Steve's defense ranked 28th nationally in total defense (328.4 yards per game) and 53rd in scoring defense (23.7 ppg). Alongside Bill in Super Bowl LII, Steve helped the New England Patriots' defense hold the Los Angeles Rams to just three points. New England then led the NFL in total defense – and scoring defense – during its post-Super Bowl season. It wouldn't be a UNC football season without defensive struggles, which continued plaguing the program in 2024, despite landing defensive coordinator Geoff Collins during the offseason. The Tar Heels generated increased pressure on opposing quarterbacks, though, with seven players recording multiple sacks. All seven of those players are gone, including 2024 sack leader Beau Atkinson, who transferred to Ohio State. Will Steve be the long-awaited answer at DC for North Carolina? Past defensive struggles aren't for UNC's lack of talent, because there's plenty of it to go around, but instead because of the wrong schemes. Tom Izzo names the best outside shooter on the Spartans roster for next season
Tom Izzo tells me that Kur Teng has separated himself as Michigan State's best outside under-the-radar piece to monitor in East Lansing as the Spartans look to transition post Jaden Akins/Jase Richardson on the wings. Michigan State basketball appears to have a potential star shooter ready to breakout this season. Spartans head coach Tom Izzo recently spoke with CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein where he named one particular player as his best outside shooter. And that is Kur Teng. Per a post on social media platform X, Rothstein said Izzo told him that Teng "has separated himself as Michigan State's best outside shooter." You can see the full social media post from Rothstein below: As Rothstein pointed out, Michigan State is in need for guys like Teng to step up to replace a lot of last year's outside shooting contributions from Jase Richardon, Jaden Akins and also Tre Holloman -- who transferred to NC State. Teng was a four-star prospect and ranked just outside the top 60 nationally in the 2024 class. During his true freshman season this past year, he appeared in 19 games off the bench and averaged 0.5 points per game. He is expected to have a much larger role on the Spartans this season, so it's great to hear that Izzo said his outside shot is one of the best on the team at this point in the offseason.
