When an 18-year-old's body was pulled from a submerged car in the Suwannee River in Florida, investigators learned he had also been shot, authorities said.
William Powell Jr. was found in the river in White Springs after a 911 call came in shortly after midnight on Sunday, May 4, Hamilton County Sheriff Brian Creech said at a news conference on May 6.
Cameron Fine, 18, was charged with second-degree murder and destroying evidence, while Josh Daniel, 18, was charged with accessory after the fact and destroying evidence, the sheriff said.
Investigators said Powell was killed May 3, and his body was retrieved from the submerged vehicle the next day.
Creech called it a 'senseless murder that should've never happened.'
The same day Powell's body was discovered, investigators said they arrested the two 18-year-olds. The sheriff told McClatchy News they were friends of Powell.
Sherry Blankenship told WCTV her cousin Powell was a 'wonderful kid' who was loved widely.
'We love him so much and we want justice done for Junior,' Blankenship told the outlet. 'We want justice. We want no stone unturned.'
Investigators are working to determine a motive.
Hamilton County is on the border of Florida and Georgia, about a 90-mile drive west from Jacksonville.

A woman accused of killing a bicyclist in a hit-and-run is heading to prison, Colorado officials said. Ana Caren Romero, 25, was sentenced to five years behind bars after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide, the Weld County District Attorney's Office said in a June 12 news release. McClatchy News couldn't immediately reach an attorney for Romero on June 13. Romero is accused of hitting and killing Michael Wallen on Dec. 4, 2023, prosecutors said. Wallen, whose age wasn't provided, was riding a bike in Greeley when Romero struck him, according to prosecutors. Romero didn't stop to help him, prosecutors said. Police found debris from a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the scene, according to prosecutors. Romero's attorney got in touch with police the day of the wreck and said 'their client's vehicle had been involved in an accident and was at her home,' according to prosecutors. Romero's 2019 Jeep matched witness descriptions and video, had damage to its front end and had paint transfer appearing to match Wallen's bike, prosecutors said. Romero was indicted in September 2024, pleaded guilty in February and was sentenced June 12. 'The defendant is here today because of the choices she made. She chose to drive away. She chose to not call 911. She chose to not render aid,' Deputy District Attorney Katherine Fitzgerald said, according to the news release. Fitzgerald added that, 'There's nothing more serious than when someone is killed. Michael Wallen is no longer with us because of the choices she made that night.'

As summer travel season kicks into high gear, travel scams are picking up, too. If you're cruising this summer (or anytime, really) it's important to be aware that scammers continue to use convincing tactics to defraud cruisers and other travelers. Related: Carnival Cruise Line rep addresses a troubling tipping rumor While scammers often target travelers who are looking to book cruises, hotels, or flights with legitimate-looking fake booking websites that offer enticing deals, that isn't the only tactic they use. These tricksters also prey upon travelers who need to get in touch with their cruise line, hotel, or airline about their existing reservation. One Carnival Cruise Line passenger recently posted a warning about this kind of scam on Reddit. It's one that's very easy to fall for, and although it isn't a new travel scam, it's on the rise again as travelers take summer cruises and other trips. And it's not just Carnival cruisers who are being targeted with this sophisticated scheme. Royal Caribbean cruisers have reported falling for it, or nearly falling for it, too. Doug Parker shared more details on the trending travel scam, and other cruise news including the future home port for Celebrity Cruises' new ship Celebrity Xcel, on the June 13th edition of Cruise News Today. Yes, she called what appeared to be a Carnival number found on a Google search, but it turned out to be fake. The scammer offered to rebook her cruise for $1,000 less under a bogus bulk room promotion. She hung up and confirmed with the real Carnival that it was just a scam. Carnival has now locked her account to prevent any tampering. Passengers are urged to double-check phone numbers and avoid deals that seem too good to be true. And to be clear, this trend is happening with many cruise lines, hotels, and airlines, not just Carnival. Kenyan police officer in charge of cell where blogger died arrested after protests
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan authorities on Friday arrested a senior police officer responsible for the cell where a blogger died, leading to widespread protests in the capital, Nairobi, that left dozens injured. Samson Talam, the officer commanding the central police station in Nairobi was arrested on Friday, and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority said that CCTV at the police station had been tampered with and its disks formatted a day after the blogger died inside the cell. Albert Ojwang, 31, was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya and driven 400 kilometers (248 miles) to Nairobi for what police said was publishing 'false information' about a top police official on social media. He died two days later at the police cell and police said he hit his head against the wall. A pathologist's report refuted the police account, stating that the deceased had 'head injury, neck compression and other injuries spread all over the body that are pointing towards assault.' The arrest comes a day after the detention of another officer from the central police station. James Mukhwana was arrested Thursday in connection with the blogger's death. He appeared in court Friday, where detectives requested for more time for their investigation. Ojwang's death led to protests on Thursday that turned violent as police clashed with protesters injuring several and leading a trail of property destruction. President William Ruto on Friday said his government would 'protect citizens from rogue police officers' and he called for investigations into Ojwang's death. Kenya has a history of police brutality and Ruto had vowed to end brutality and extrajudicial killings. The blogger's death comes almost a year after several activists and protesters were killed and abducted by Kenyan police during finance bill protests .
