The 2025/2026 Premier League season is upon us. The traditional curtain-raiser of English football, the Community Shield, took place last Sunday afternoon, with Crystal Palace triumphing over Liverpool in a penalty shootout to bag some silverware before the regular season kicks off tonight. If you're new to it, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gives you a £100 million budget to splash out on a squad of 15 players, which includes 11 starters and four substitutes. There are fresh rules this year, with free transfers allowed during the Africa Cup of Nations. Big names like Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Manchester City's latest star signing Omar Marmoush will be absent for a significant chunk of the season from December. There are also twice as many chips to play with, adding an extra layer of intrigue for participants. If you're not familiar, chips can be used at any time and help boost your points tally. For instance, you could use a captain chip to triple your captain's points (instead of doubling them) for that game week, but you won't be able to use it again for the rest of the season, reports Wales Online. This season, players will receive a set of chips up until game week 19, which will then refresh for the second half of the season, providing more chances to rack up points. But what about the team itself? Let's delve into the ultimate team you could assemble based on the stats. In goal, you need a player from a team that isn't likely to concede many goals - it's as simple as that. Clean sheets will contribute vital points to your tally. Alisson and Ederson are solid choices from Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively. However, considering players like Nick Pope or Emiliano Martinez could also be beneficial, although the latter is suspended until 23 August, so it's best to steer clear of him this week! We're opting for Liverpool's Alisson. He's one of the top shot-stoppers in global football and his one-on-one ability is unparalleled. Despite their defeat to Palace last weekend, Liverpool have significantly bolstered their squad and could potentially reclaim the league title this year. You don't need to select four defenders; in fact, it might hamper your scoring. FPL has introduced an enhanced points system for defenders, but attacking players will always rack up the most points. So, we've chosen a three-man defence - Neco Williams, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Cristian Romero. West Ham's new signing Diouf, a steal at £4.5m, was instrumental in Slavia Prague's league title victory last season. At just 20, he's been hailed as a top young talent and could prove to be a savvy purchase and the epitome of a differential. Malen has shown promise in Aston Villa's pre-season and often finds the back of the net. He's also an experienced international with 43 caps for Holland and is a snip at just £5.5m. Wirtz played a key role in Liverpool's attack against Palace on Sunday and is one of Europe's most exciting young talents - he's one of our star players at £8.5m - expect a flurry of goals and assists from the German. Eze is a hot property, and his future at Palace is up in the air, with Spurs reportedly interested. Regardless of where he lands, at £7.5m he's worth every penny. If he ends up signing for a club outside of the Premier League, don't forget to remove him from your team! Leading the line, it's Chris Wood, Victor Gyokeres and Danny Welbeck. This writer had Welbeck in his team last season, and what a star he was. The Premier League stalwart consistently chips in with a goal and is a steal at just £6.5m. He netted 10 goals and provided five assists last season, racking up a total of 125 points. Opting for a less expensive forward also frees up funds to bring in another key player. We've chosen new Arsenal striker Gyokeres. Although he's yet to prove himself in the Premier League, he's a prolific goal-scorer and could be the missing piece in Arsenal's title challenge. If he hits his stride, he'll bag you plenty of points. Let's be honest, Chris Wood's 2024/2025 season was nothing short of extraordinary. Now 33-years-old and in the twilight of his career, he clearly hasn't lost his touch. Wood banged in 20 league goals last year and finished joint fourth in the top-scorer charts. In our view, he's a must-have. The team In truth, the Premier League is wildly unpredictable, so it's likely you'll need to make numerous changes to your selection as the season progresses. New signings can disappoint, while unknown players can burst onto the scene - so keep your eyes peeled. Your bench should primarily consist of budget players to allow room for top-tier picks. However, these benchwarmers should realistically be regulars for their clubs (not fringe players) to ensure that if they're called into action, they actually earn you points. In other words, don't just pick someone because they're dirt cheap. Over the bar Three Irish players are auditioning to be starting kickers in the NFL, and each is likely to be back on the field for Week 2 of pre-season action this weekend. Mark McNamee's journey to the NFL has been somewhat haphazard, but that is where he seems to thrive. Having only landed stateside the night before the game, he took a few kick-offs for the Packers against the Jets last Saturday and looked solid in his new job, even if it does look like he may be set for a season training as the back-up. That said, all opportunities to impress are precious, and the Ballyboden goalkeeper did his job. "I landed at about 11pm [the night before the game]," McNamee told reporters after the game. "The Packers and the immigration lawyers have been great with me in just getting it done, it's not an easy thing to get a visa. It felt like a long time, but it was only two weeks. It was really quick and I'm really grateful to be here. "It feels like it's the beginning, it's a good moment for me and my family." 'When you see the evolution of the game today to maybe what it was 10 years ago, you know, the greats like the Tom Brady's of the world or the Peyton Manning's of the world, those guys would have been referred to as guys that were less athletic, but pocket passers that had a tremendous arm and unbelievable accuracy. 'What you're seeing now in today's game, people like Lamar Jackson, Bo Nix who had a great rookie year in Denver last year, Jayden Daniels - all these guys have that arm talent. But they're also unique athletes. And we feel that Justin Fields fits that type of quarterback that not only can make plays with his arms, but he also is going to make plays with his legs when he runs with the football.' One final point on Spielman - I've interviewed a lot of players and coaches who are with teams playing in UK and Ireland games, and most, either out of their genuine belief in challenge or just a need to toe the party line, will say something about how playing in Europe changes how they coach, or the players they want etc. Spielman is straight up, and refreshingly so: 'No, playing in London doesn't affect our roster at all! You're still trying to put your best 53-man roster together, whether we're playing in the UK or Mars. You're going to go there to try to win the ball game. The rest is sports science. 'It's an excellent opportunity to engage with the fans and perform on the world stage, and we aim to do that.' Kudos for being fresh Mr Spielman. Dallas: A soap opera Netflix will release a documentary series next week about the 1990s Dallas Cowboys: America's Team, The Gambler and his Cowboys. Jerry Jones, the team's eccentric owner, is naturally a central character, as he is today as his standoff with star defender Micah Parsons drags on. Most fans want their team's owners and general managers (Jerry is both in Dallas) to be focused on winning. But the Jones dynasty always seems more focused on the attention - which to be fair is the cornerstone to becoming the world's most valuable sports team. And Jerry was remarkably honest about that this week. '"I do believe if we're not being looked at, then I'll do my part to get us looked at," Jones said. "The beautiful thing for networks or, if you will, streaming companies, is that the NFL is a 365-day-a-year interest factory.
