Harimau Malaya fight back to hold Cape Verde 1-1
Despite being ranked 131st in the world, Harimau Malaya showed grit and attacking intent to match 72nd-ranked Cape Verde in a contest that tested their composure and resilience.
Head coach Peter Cklamovski handed debuts to Gabriel Palmero and Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili, and both impressed on their first international outing.
Palmero, in particular, nearly capped his debut with a stunning solo effort, surging forward nearly 30m before his shot grazed the outside of the post, leaving Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Dias rooted.
The visitors, however, drew first blood in the 29th minute. A flowing move saw captain Ryan Mendes slip in Sidney Cabral on the right, and the 22-year-old Viktoria Koln wingback executed a clever feint to beat Daniel Ting before rifling a right-footed strike past Ahmad Syihan Hazmi.
Cape Verde's crisp passing and fluid movement underlined their quality but Malaysia responded with plenty of enterprise.
Winger Arif Aiman Hanapi was lively on the flanks and fashioned three chances, all denied by the alert Dias.
Midfielder Nazmi Faiz Mansor tried to catch Dias off guard in the 37th minute with a cheeky curling effort after a layoff from Faisal Halim, but it drifted wide.
After the break, Malaysia turned up the heat. With Faisal and Arif dictating the tempo, the home side carved out several chances.
In the 60th minute, Faisal's low drive was spilled by Dias but no one was on hand to convert the rebound.
Moments later, Arif whipped in a dangerous cross that flashed across the face of the goal, evading everyone with Dias stranded.
The deserved equaliser finally came in the 78th minute. Substitute Quentin Cheng pounced on a defensive clearance and teed up striker Paulo Josue, who calmly slotted the ball home.
The goal was extra special for the naturalised Brazilian, who scored at the home ground of his club, Kuala Lumpur City.
Josue nearly grabbed a brace in the 85th minute, but his powerful left-footed attempt off a Stuart Wilkin pass was brilliantly saved by Dias.
Malaysia will face Cape Verde again at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3. The game will be held behind closed doors.

Moraes reminds Selangor not to give Buriram too much respect in daunting away clash
PETALING JAYA: Selangor begin their Asean Club Championship journey tonight with the toughest of openers - away to reigning champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena in Thailand. The Thai treble winners, who lifted the inaugural crown in May after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi, are widely regarded as the benchmark in South-East Asian football. Striker Chrigor Moraes, who leads the line for the Red Giants and a former Buriram player himself, certainly knows the score. But he insists the team must balance respect for Buriram with belief in themselves. "Because Buriram are such a strong team, it's very difficult to play them at their home ground," said the Brazilian. "But I remind my teammates we must be strong and concentrated. We too have good players, and I believe we can take the game to them. As for Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, he sees the tough challenge of taking on Buriram as a great opportunity. "This kind of game definitely makes us stronger,' said the Japanese tactician. "Buriram have 16 foreigners in their squad. I don't know who will play against us but we are looking forward to see what they bring. For us, the focus is to keep our style, concentrate on our football and fight 100 percent. That's our preparation." Kinoshi, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Serbian national team, knows the scale of the task ahead. Buriram not only boast depth but also pedigree, with several players of international calibre. "They are one of the strongest teams in South-East Asia, along with Johor Darul Ta'zim. But last season, we earned the right to face these kinds of teams. "I am very proud of my players and our work. To be here, to be playing Buriram, is an honour. Now we must show our style against them." Selangor head into their debut on the Asean stage after finishing as runners-up to JDT in both the Super League and FA Cup last season. The Chang Arena has long been a fortress for Buriram and Selangor will be wary of the champions' ability to punish mistakes. For Selangor, the trip to Buriram is more than just a group-stage opener; it is a statement of intent. And whether they leave Thailand with points or not, Kinoshi has made it clear that the Red Giants will not compromise on their identity. "We must show our football. We must fight and we must be proud to play against one of Asia's best.'

Guirassy sends struggling Dortmund past Essen in German Cup
ESSEN, Germany: A 79th-minute goal from Serhou Guirassy took Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 win at neighbours Essen in the first round of the German Cup on Monday. Five-time German Cup winners Dortmund struggled against their third division opponents, carving out few opportunities. With the match drifting towards extra time, Guirassy collected the ball outside the penalty area and hit a low shot inside the right post to take the lead for the visitors. In stoppage time, Essen midfielder Kelsey Owusu fouled Dortmund wingback Yan Couto and the Brazilian needed to be stretchered from the pitch. Dortmund and Essen lie 35 kilometres away from each other in Germany's crowded and football-mad Ruhr region. The last time the two sides met was in 2008, when future Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp made his debut as Dortmund manager. Klopp would go on to win two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup as Dortmund coach, along with taking the club to the 2013 Champions League final, where they lost to rivals Bayern Munich.
