Insider says Lakers are working on a 'consolidation' trade to avoid waiving Jordan Goodwin
Marcus Smart, a three-time All-Defensive first team selectee and the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, is heading to the Los Angeles Lakers. On Saturday, he agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Washington Wizards and agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers for $11 million over two years once he clears waivers. In order to actually be able to officially sign Smart, the Lakers need to clear some space under the first apron of the salary cap. They plan on waiving guard Shake Milton, but they need to make one more move in order to legally give Smart the contract he agreed to. They could waive guard Jordan Goodwin, whom they called up from the G League at midseason. But Goodwin showed promise as a potential 3-and-D player, and he may be someone they would want to keep around if possible. According to ClutchPoints Lakers insider Anthony Irwin, the team is working on a consolidation trade that they could execute very soon. Goodwin, a 26-year-old undrafted player, averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 18.7 minutes as a member of the Lakers. He shot 38.2% from 3-point range and consistently hustled for loose balls and rebounds while playing some energetic defense. Ideally, L.A. would pull off a trade that would save it some money and clear a roster spot while bringing in a 3-and-D wing. But doing so won't be easy, especially if other teams around the league are dead-set against helping L.A. win its 18th NBA championship.
