KOTA KINABALU (July 24): The Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) will lead a delegation together with the Sabah Chinese Herbal Doctors' Association to participate in the 2025 International (Bozhou) Traditional Chinese Medicine Expo and the 3rd China (Bozhou) – RCEP TCM Industry Cooperation Conference' to be held in Bozhou City, Anhui Province, China.
SCCC president Datuk Frankie Liew expressed hope that through the initiative of 'Sabah TCM Going Global,' it can drive the upgrade and development of local traditional Chinese medicine in terms of technology, services, and industry.
'As is well known, Sabah is rich in medicinal resources and has a strong tradition of using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). These advantages are highly compatible and complementary with China, offering Sabah the opportunity to become the most important TCM production and research base outside of China,' he said. Liew made this announcement yesterday after holding a dialogue with the Sabah Chinese Physicians Association.
Representatives from the Sabah Chinese Herbal Doctors' Association who attended included chariman Sim Hun Yung, vice chairman Lung Tet Kun, assistant secretary Tan Ker Shin, members Chin Cheong Mong, Loh Yun Kent and SCCC committee members Chin Hui Zhi and Cheong Siau Ling.
Liew revealed that the 2025 International (Bozhou) TCM Expo and the 3rd China (Bozhou) – RCEP TCM Industry Cooperation Conference will take place from September 6 to 10.
He further stated that this time, the delegation from Sabah will be led by the SCCC, jointly with the Sabah Chinese Herbal Doctors' Association, and will include representatives from the business community and TCM professionals, to participate in this major event in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.
He also emphasized that the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has brought new business opportunities to China and ASEAN countries. The TCM industries of RCEP member countries are highly complementary, which helps promote trade, investment and technological cooperation among enterprises in the TCM field across these countries.
Liew looks forward to this event fostering collaboration among the TCM industries of Malaysia and other RCEP member countries. He hopes it will help develop planning and policy alignment, identify entry points and areas of focus for cooperation, and jointly create an open, shared and mutually beneficial trade platform. This will support Sabah's TCM industry and its enterprises to expand cooperation and advance new developments in TCM cooperation under the RCEP framework.
'We hope that the standards and equipment of TCM in Sabah will continue to improve in the future and remain a key healthcare option, enabling people to enjoy better TCM services and treatment, bringing benefits to the public,' he stated.

Markets rise as EU-US trade deal boosts euro and global stocks

HONG KONG: Most stock markets climbed higher on Monday, with the euro strengthening after the European Union and United States finalised a landmark trade agreement aimed at preventing a damaging trade war. The deal, announced by former US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has injected optimism into global markets. The agreement includes a baseline 15 percent tariff on EU exports to the US, covering key sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. Trump described the deal as 'probably the biggest ever reached in any capacity,' while von der Leyen emphasised its role in providing stability and predictability for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. Brussels also committed to purchasing $750 billion worth of US energy and making an additional $600 billion in investments. The news pushed the euro to $1.1779, up from $1.1749 at Friday's close. Asian markets mostly advanced, with Hong Kong leading gains at around one percent. Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Wellington, Taipei, and Jakarta also rose, while Tokyo dipped for a second day following last week's rally. European and US futures pointed to further gains. Analysts noted that the trade developments, including progress in US-China negotiations, have eased market concerns. 'The news flow from both the extension with China and the agreement with the EU is clearly market-friendly,' said Chris Weston of Pepperstone. Investors are now focused on upcoming trade talks between US and Chinese officials in Stockholm, as well as key earnings reports from tech giants like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft. The Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan are expected to maintain steady interest rates, though market watchers will scrutinise their outlooks amid shifting trade dynamics. - AFP

CGTN Highlights President Xi's Call For Stronger China-EU Ties At Landmark 25th Summit

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with European Union (EU) leaders at the 25th China-EU Summit in Beijing, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations and calling for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, and global governance. As reported by China Global Television Network Corporation (CGTN), the summit emphasised China's push for multilateralism, economic openness, and mutual respect as the guiding principles for future China-EU relations. During a meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing recently, President Xi told European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that China-EU relations have entered a critical historical juncture. Xi said there are no fundamental conflicts of interest or geopolitical contradictions between the two sides, stressing that cooperation remains the dominant feature of bilateral ties, according to CGTN in a statement. He proposed that both parties uphold mutual respect, pursue openness and cooperation while managing differences, and jointly safeguard multilateralism and the international rules-based order. Xi said the China-EU economic relationship is naturally complementary and mutually beneficial and highlighted the importance of deepening partnerships in green and digital sectors. According to China's customs data, trade between China and the EU reached US$785.8 billion in 2024, a 300-fold increase compared to 1975, when relations were first established. (US$1=RM4.21) He also urged the EU to maintain an open market and refrain from restrictive trade measures to ensure a favourable business environment for Chinese enterprises in Europe, citing Chinese battery giant CALB's US$2.2 billion plant in Portugal—expected to create 1,800 jobs—as a model of productive bilateral investment. CGTN highlighted that both sides agreed to upgrade their export control dialogue mechanism, enhance communication, and ensure the stability of industrial and supply chains at the summit.

US-China set to meet with extension of tariff pause on the cards

STOCKHOLM/WASHINGTON: Top economic officials from the United States and China are set to renew negotiations Monday (July 28) -- with an extension of lower tariff levels on the cards -- as President Donald Trump's trade policy enters a critical week. Talks between the world's top two economies are slated to happen over two days in the Swedish capital Stockholm, and they come as other countries are also rushing to finalise deals with Washington. For dozens of trading partners, failing to strike an agreement in the coming days means they could face significant tariff hikes on exports to the United States come Friday, Aug 1. The steeper rates, threatened against partners like Brazil and India, would raise the duties their products face from a "baseline" of 10 per cent now to levels up to 50 per cent. Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have already effectively raised duties on US imports to levels not seen since the 1930s, according to data from The Budget Lab research centre at Yale University. For now, all eyes are on discussions between Washington and Beijing as a delegation including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent meets a Chinese team led by Vice Premier He Lifeng in Sweden. While both countries in April imposed tariffs on each other's products that reached triple-digit levels, US duties this year have temporarily been lowered to 30 per cent and China's countermeasures slashed to 10 per cent. But the 90-day truce, instituted after talks in Geneva in May, is set to expire on Aug 12. Since the Geneva meeting, the two sides have convened in London to iron out disagreements. "There seems to have been a fairly significant shift in (US) administration thinking on China since particularly the London talks," said Emily Benson, head of strategy at Minerva Technology Futures. "The mood now is much more focused on what's possible to achieve, on warming relations where possible and restraining any factors that could increase tensions," she told AFP. Talks with China have not produced a deal but Benson said both countries have made progress, with certain rare earth and semiconductor flows restarting. "Secretary Bessent has also signalled that he thinks a concrete outcome will be to delay the 90-day tariff pause," she said. "That's also promising, because it indicates that something potentially more substantive is on the horizon." The South China Morning Post, citing sources on both sides, reported Sunday that Washington and Beijing are expected to extend their tariff pause by another 90 days. Trump has announced pacts so far with the European Union, Britain, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, although details have been sparse. An extension of the US-China deal to keep tariffs at reduced levels "would show that both sides see value in continuing talks", said Thibault Denamiel, a fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. US-China Business Council President Sean Stein said the market is not anticipating a detailed readout from Stockholm: "What's more important is the atmosphere coming out." "The business community is optimistic that the two presidents will meet later this year, hopefully in Beijing," he told AFP. "It's clear that on both sides, the final decision-maker is going to be the president." Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said both countries' willingness to meet was a "positive development". For others, the prospect of higher US tariffs and few details from fresh trade deals mark "a far cry from the ideal scenario", said Denamiel. But they show some progress, particularly with partners Washington has signalled are on its priority list like the EU, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea. The EU unveiled a pact with Washington on Sunday while Seoul is rushing to strike an agreement, after Japan and the Philippines already reached the outlines of deals. Breakthroughs have been patchy since Washington promised a flurry of agreements after unveiling, and then swiftly postponing, tariff hikes targeting dozens of economies in April. Denamiel warned of overlooking countries that fall outside Washington's priority list. Solid partnerships are needed, he said, if Washington wants to diversify supply chains, enforce advanced technology controls, and tackle excess Chinese capacity. - Reuters
