Excise duty biggest challenge for beer industry: Kingfisher maker's CEO

Time of India09-05-2025

Excise duty remains the biggest challenge to beer business in the country, Vivek Gupta, managing director and chief executive officer of
United Breweries
, said on Thursday.
"The worry part is the increase in duty. We saw the impact of that in Telangana and Karnataka. Duty is posing to be the biggest threat," Gupta told analysts in the earnings call post fourth quarter results.
Karnataka last week increased tax on the manufacturing cost of beer to 205 per cent , from the earlier 195 per cent , thereby impacting the MRP of both mass and premium brands. In Telangana, too, prices went up 15 per cent in February.
However, "despite the disruption, we are in the middle of the season, (and) we feel confident," Gupta said.
The country's largest brewer plans to increase its production capacity this fiscal, he said.
United Breweries will also increase cooler installation in retail outlets across the country this fiscal. In Maharashtra alone, it plans to increase cooler penetration from the current 10-15 per cent retail outlets to 50 per cent over the next couple of years, according to Gupta.
He, however, declined to share the proposed capital expenditure figure for 2025-26.
The maker of Kingfisher and Heineken beers had a capex of Rs 254 crore in 2024-25, up by Rs 64 crore from the previous year, which was used in commercial and supply chain initiatives to drive growth.
Its standalone revenue for the fourth quarter declined 7.5 per cent year on year to Rs 4,425.5 crore. Its net profit grew by 20.5 per cent to Rs 97 crore, buoyed by increasing demand for premium brands.
The company posted 24 per cent volume growth for its premium portfolio during the quarter while its overall volume sales rose 5 per cent .
"We see strong growth from Kingfisher Ultra, Kingfisher Ultra Max and Heineken Silver and we continue to drive premium volume growth," the company said in its earnings report.
"After receiving an overwhelming response in Maharashtra and West Bengal, we also introduced Amstel Grande in Uttar Pradesh, a vibrant market with a growing demand for premium beverages," it added.
For 2024-25, UBL sales grew by 5.6 per cent on year to Rs 19,400.8 crore and net profit rose 7.8 per cent to Rs 441 crore.
United Breweries' shares closed at Rs 2,159 on the BSE on Thursday, down 1 per cent from the previous close.

Rs 2,000 denomination fake currency notes dip, but Rs 500 counterfeit notes spike in FY25

Chennai: Dip in Rs 2,000 denomination counterfeit notes contributed to the reduction in the value of fake banknotes detected by banks and Reserve Bank, but there was a rise in Rs 500 Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) during FY25, RBI data showed. Banknotes of Rs 2,000 denomination were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023, though it continues to be legal tender. The counterfeit notes detected in the denominations of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100 and Rs 2,000 declined in 2024-25, while those in Rs 200 and Rs 500 denominations increased by 13.9% and 37.3%, respectively, when compared with the previous year (FY24). A total number of 2,17,396 FICNs was detected by banks and Reserve Bank in FY25, recording a marginal drop by 2.3% in FY24 at 2,22,639 FICNs. However, it does not include counterfeit notes seized by the police and other enforcement agencies, India's central bank said in its annual report for 2024-25. According to data, Rs 500 FICNs increased from 85,722 in FY24 to 1,17,727 in FY25. Its value rose from around Rs 4.3 crore to Rs 5.9 crore, respectively. Subsequently, the number of Rs 2,000 denomination counterfeit notes plunged by 86.5% YoY at 3,508 in FY25 from 26,035 in FY24. Its value decreased to Rs 70 lakh in FY25 from Rs 5.2 crore in FY24. Further, 32,660 numbers of Rs 200 FICNs and 51,069 in the Rs 100 denomination were detected in the last fiscal (FY25). Out of the total FICNs detected in the banking sector in 2024-25, 95.3% was detected by banks and the rest 4.7% was detected at the Reserve Bank. The report said, a Currency Research and Development Centre (CRDC) has been set up under the administrative control of Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran (BRBNMPL) for conducting advanced testing of security features of Indian banknotes, counterfeit deterrence tests, forensic/scientific analysis of forged notes, ethical counterfeiting of notes by using latest available tools and technologies and for the development of security/design features for Indian banknotes. Former president of Bank Employees Federation of India C J Nandakumar said, the rise in Rs 500 FICNs indicates the circulation of counterfeit notes. 'Criminals have become sophisticated in designing fake notes with features that even escape from being identified by sorting machines. Apart from issuing guidelines, the regulator must also initiate more stringent actions and supervise to end the menace of FICNs,' he added. Siddaramaiah flags ‘stark imbalance in returns', seeks higher central tax pool share

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday met the 16th Finance Commission in Delhi and is learnt to have 'highlighted a stark imbalance in fiscal returns', telling the Commission that 'for every rupee Karnataka contributes to Union taxes, it receives only 15 paise in return'. A statement issued after the meeting by the CM's office said that Siddaramaiah 'pointed out that the reduction in Karnataka's share under the 15th Finance Commission from 4.713% to 3.647% resulted in a cumulative loss of over Rs 80,000 crore during the award period'. The overall share allocated to all states from central taxes was reduced to 41% for 2021-26, as against 42% in the previous cycle, primarily due to the creation of Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Siddaramaiah demanded a larger allocation for the state from the central tax pool for the five-year period beginning April 1, 2026. According to the statement, Karnataka 'proposed that the share of taxes devolved to states (vertical devolution) be increased to at least 50% (from April 1, 2026), and that cesses and surcharges be capped at 5%'. 'The state also recommended including Union non-tax revenues in the divisible pool.' 'For sharing funds among states (horizontal devolution), Karnataka suggested that each state retain about 60% of what it contributes, with 40% going to less-developed states, ensuring both growth and equity,' it said. Siddaramaiah told the Commission that 'to make the formula fairer, Karnataka has proposed reducing the weight of the income-distance criterion and giving more weight to a state's economic contribution, so that high-performing states are not penalised, but encouraged,' said the statement. The state also called for 'critical reforms' to make the fiscal devolution system 'more growth-oriented, predictable, and fair' and highlighted three 'key issues' — the growing disparities in per capita devolution; the flawed design of revenue deficit grants, and the unpredictable nature of state-specific grants. During the meeting, the CM told the Commission that the state recommends replacing discretionary special grants with a formula-based allocation of 0.3% of Gross Union Receipts. The CM also sought support for Rs 1.15 lakh crore investment to strengthen Bengaluru's infrastructure, given its major role in Karnataka's economy, said the statement.
