KUCHING (May 21): Billy Sujang (GPS-Opar) has proposed that the allowances for community leaders and village chiefs (KMKKs) be increased to at least RM1,700 per month, equivalent to the minimum wage in the public sector.
He said the proposal is timely and necessary to recognise the vital role played by KMKKs in coordinating government programmes, maintaining village harmony, and helping vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, and low-income families.
'With a more reasonable allowance, they would be more enthusiastic to carry out their duties, while producing more quality and dedicated grassroots leaders,' he said in his Motion of Appreciation to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
According to Billy, the issue of allowances for KMKKs has been discussed in several recent House sittings, but no decision has been made by the government so far.
'KMKKs are an important link between the government and the people. The current monthly allowance rates are RM1,300 for Pemanca, RM1,100 for Penghulu, and RM900 for Ketua Kaum.
'These amounts are no longer seen as commensurating with their responsibilities, workload, and time commitment,' he said.
On another matter, Billy drew the attention of the august House to the condition of Lundu Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Sarawak.
He noted that the building is now more than 60 years old, with the majority of its facilities outdated and no longer suitable for a functioning healthcare facility.
'This is unacceptable for a community that deserves better healthcare services.
'Given the new hospital site is already prepared, my fellow colleague from Tanjong Datu Azizul Adenan and I had brought up this issue in the august House last year, urging the federal government to approve and allocate funds for the construction of a new Lundu District Hospital.
'Modernising our healthcare facilities is not just an improvement; it is a necessity for providing quality healthcare to our residents,' he said. Billy Sujang community leaders DUN monthly allowance Opar village chiefs

What's next after your miraculous stage 4 cancer cure, Jamal Yunos? Stage 5 cancer, leukaemia or heart attack?

SUNGAI Besar UMNO division head Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos should have resorted to whispered prayers to express gratitude to divine intervention of having been 'finally free of cancer after a five-month battle for his life'. While it remains a mystery as to why he chose to publicly declare his miraculous healing from his stage four cancer, the Barisan Nasional (BN) Selangor communications head has certainly shot himself in the foot after political adversary Tressa Kok reminded him of payback time. 'Congratulations,' posted the Seputeh MP on her Facebook in response to a news article quoting Jamal as stating that the intensive treatment he underwent had completely removed the cancer. 'Time for Jamal to pay my lawyer as ordered by the court.' Recall that the DAP lawmaker has in October last year obtained a court order to seize and sell the contents of Jamal's house after the latter failed to pay RM50,000 for her legal costs upon losing a RM300,000 defamation lawsuit that dated back to July 26, 2022. On April 6, 2017, Kok sued Jamal for defamation after he accused her of misappropriating RM2 mil of funds from the Selangor state Government's Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (YAWAS). The former DAP vice-chairman was reported to have originally sought RM1 mil in general damages along with compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages and an injunction to prevent Jamal from repeating or spreading the allegations. Interestingly, not only had Kok demanded what's due to her, Malaysians, too, are keen to learn the secret to the tuala (towel) man's Stage 4 lung cancer healing for lives of many Malaysian cancer patients can be saved in the future. But that went on a bad start for Jamal's healthy physique is a tad too deceptive to people who had previous contact with cancer patients. 'Where got cancer 🤦‍♀️look so healthy and chubby. I've seen real cancer patients,' exclaimed one commenter. Many want to know the identity of the oncologist who could reverse a stage 4 cancer to full healing. Well, the 'Red Shirts' leader (a parody of Thailand's 'Yellow Shirts' protest against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his successors) certainly deserves an Oscar for pulling out his 'stage 4 cancer agony' stunt. – June 11, 2025

Fahmi: Tread carefully with Gerik crash online content

SINTOK: Content creators and social media users should exercise caution and uphold proper etiquette when sharing or producing content related to the Gerik bus accident, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic). The Communications Minister said the reminder was to protect the privacy and emotions of the victims' families. 'I urge everyone to give the victims' families as much space and privacy as possible. 'I came across a piece of content made by an individual at the scene of the incident and inside the bus. 'Although the message is a message of condolence, for me, it is an accident area that is under investigation by the authorities, so be careful in producing content,' he told a press conference after delivering a keynote address at the forum titled 'Suara, Siber dan Sempadan: Merungkai Dinamika Kebebasan Media dalam Era Digital' at Universiti Utara Malaysia here yesterday, Bernama reported. Fahmi indicated that the incident is anticipated to be among the topics discussed at today's Cabinet meeting. 'However, we will first await the official report from the authorities. 'Based on the findings, we will determine the necessary course of action, including any enforcement measures that may be required. 'We are currently awaiting the Cabinet meeting for the latest updates. 'Insya-Allah, a press conference will be held after the meeting, which I will personally oversee,' he said. Separately, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will provide RM1,000 each in immediate aid to 10 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students warded in the intensive care units of two hospitals in Perak. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the donations were made through Yayasan Kebajikan Negara under a compassionate fund. 'Eight students are being treated at Hospital Taiping, while two are in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh,' she told reporters in Putrajaya. Nancy said the ministry will also look into providing aid and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. 'I think the families need time to grieve as well,' she said. 'It is not just about giving money. What they need most right now is emotional support.'

KPWKM provides immediate aid to 10 UPSI students in ICU

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will provide RM1,000 each in immediate aid to 10 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) warded in the intensive care units of two hospitals in Perak. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the donations are through Yayasan Kebajikan Negara under the 'Skim Pemberian Ehsan Kepada Keluarga Mangsa'. She said her deputy, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, will visit the affected students on her behalf. 'Eight students are being treated at Taiping Hospital, while two are in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh,' she told reporters after officiating the Women Seminar 2025 'EmpowerHER: Engage Energise Elevate', here today. Nancy said the ministry will also look into aid and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. 'I think the families need time to grieve as well. It is not just about giving money. What they need most right now is emotional support,' she said, adding that the ministry is ready to offer the services of professional counsellors. 'But we cannot simply show up immediately, people are still devastated,' she said. The tragic crash occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am yesterday on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza. The accident claimed the lives of 15 students and left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and the Alza's driver and three passengers.
