RM94 million flood damage recorded by Works Ministry in 2024
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that most repairs in flood-hit states, including Terengganu (RM22.13 million), Kelantan (RM20.38 million), and Perak (RM33.4 million), have been completed.
'This demonstrates the government's commitment to assisting areas impacted by the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) and recent floods.
Necessary repairs have been carried out,' Nanta told reporters after inspecting the Marang bridge upgrading project. He added that the ministry is preparing for the upcoming MTL season, expected later this year.
A Disaster Operations Room has been set up to monitor and respond to flood-related infrastructure complaints.
'This operations room operates year-round, but we will intensify efforts during the MTL period to ensure nationwide coverage,' Nanta explained.
Meanwhile, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat noted that nearly 90 per cent of flood-damaged roads in the state have been repaired by the federal government through KKR.
'Only one slope road in Bukit Besi, Dungun, remains pending repair, with the tender expected in two months. The rest are fully restored,' Hanafiah said, expressing gratitude to the federal government and Nanta for overseeing the restoration efforts. - Bernama

TAWAU: The Works Ministry has decided not to allow any further extension of time (EOT) for the construction of the Additional Multi-Class Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT TPK) project at Kem Kabota. Its Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan issued the reminder following the second EOT granted to the contractor, with the new completion deadline now set for Oct 31, 2026 — a deadline he said must be strictly followed. Advertisement 'The contractor and consultants must now focus on solutions instead of excuses,' he said. Speaking to reporters during a site visit and briefing, Ahmad said the delay has forced many army personnel to rent homes outside the camp, with group rentals coordinated by Kem Kabota and the Ministry of Defence. He said the project is critical, as high rental costs are burdening some 1,500 military families currently staying off-base. 'To ease this burden, we support the contractor's suggestion for a temporary Industrialised Building System (IBS) facility to be set up within the camp itself, so that moulding work can be done closer to the construction site. 'At present, the contractor has to source materials from the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) plant in Kota Kinabalu, which takes about 12 hours in travel time,' he said. Ahmad expressed confidence that the IBS initiative would help reduce both time and costs at the construction site, while ensuring that building materials are delivered safely and promptly. According to a media release, the project is part of the Federal Government's effort to enhance the welfare of defence personnel and their families through the provision of safe, modern, and comfortable housing facilities. The RM97 million project began on May 2, 2023, and has reached 14 per cent physical progress. It is expected to be completed within the stipulated time, cost, and specifications. The project is being implemented conventionally by contractor Erawan Power Sdn Bhd, with the Public Works Department (JKR) acting as the executing agency, while JKR Malaysia's Special Project Team 2 oversees its management and execution. Modern residences for military personnel in Tawau
Ahmad Maslan TAWAU (July 17): A RM97 million modern residential project is being built for military personnel in Tawau as the government remains committed to enhancing the nation's defense ecosystem. Today, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan conducted an on-site inspection to monitor the progress of the Additional Multi-Class Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) Project at Kabota Camp, Tawau. This project is part of the government's initiative to strengthen the welfare of defense personnel and their families by providing modern, comfortable, and safe housing. The project commenced on 2 May 2023 and is scheduled for completion by 31 October 2026. To date, physical progress stands at 14%, with expectations to meet the stipulated timeline, cost and specifications. Upon completion, the project will include apartments, bungalows, houses, kindergarten and childcare center, multi-purpose court and playground, and new water tank tower. These facilities will significantly benefit military personnel and their families, ensuring a more comfortable and balanced lifestyle. The modern, well-equipped environment is also expected to boost morale and motivation as they fulfill their duties to the nation. This project reflects the MADANI government's dedication to delivering quality housing for the people, especially defense personnel, aligning with the core principles of Malaysia MADANI: compassion, wellbeing, confidence and sustainability. Speaking to reporters later, Ahmad said the project must be completed by Oct 31 next year, as scheduled. 'There will be no third extension of time (EOT). Two EOTs have already been granted. This is a very urgent and necessary project. Once completed, it will greatly benefit military personnel and their families by easing their burden of high rental costs outside,' he said. The Ministry of Works (KKR) urges the Public Works Department (JKR) to maintain rigorous oversight of the project's progress, collaborate closely with the contractor, and conduct continuous stakeholder engagement and inspections. This ensures timely, cost-effective, and quality completion, accelerating benefits for public defense personnel and their families. Meanwhile, Ahmad urged contractors using the Industrialised Building System (IBS) in government and major projects to produce components in situ or adjacent to the project site. He said the move could help reduce costs and construction time, while also minimising the risk of damage to IBS materials. 'This came after I agreed to the proposal by the contractor for the Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) project at Kabota Camp here to establish a temporary site for IBS components. 'It is more economical if the IBS material moulds are made in situ. I believe this is a good solution for government projects. Otherwise, the materials would have to be transported by trailer from the SEDCO factory in Kota Kinabalu,' he said. According to him, transporting materials to Tawau by trailer took 12 hours and posed various risks, including possible damage to IBS poles.
