King ‘riveted' by story of Royal Marine boxer who was stabbed
'I was a victim of knife crime myself at the age of 17,' the 23-year-old said.
'After getting stabbed, I really turned my life around, mainly because of my boxing coach. He was a great mentor for me.
'But boxing was so important because it meant six nights a week I weren't on the streets, I knew where I'd be.
'I'd always be in the gym, especially Friday night. He always called it naughty night. So I would be in the boxing gym.
'I'm not able to mess about – I'd be too tired to do anything else.'
Charles said he was 'riveted' by Mr Shaw-Tullin's story, adding that it was 'quite a good point' about 'being too exhausted to get into trouble'.
The King also invited Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had come straight from chairing a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy in attendance too.
Charles spoke to Michael Gilroy, a fight promoter from Newcastle, who went on the King's Trust's enterprise programme.
Mr Gilroy struggled with his mental health and took up Muay Thai to help him with discipline, which led him to start his business Evol Promotions.
He told the PA news agency: '(The King is) a really funny character, he's got a great sense of humour.
'As soon as he found out I was part of the King's Trust and I'm an ambassador, he said he's proud of me.'
The 27-year-old launched his business in June 2021 but said the first year was difficult.
'I learned more in the three-day enterprise course with the King's Trust than I did in a year in business,' Mr Gilroy said.
He said he hopes to inspire people in his role as a young ambassador after 'graduating' from the programme.
There were also discussions about other issues young people face in 2025.
Families of victims of knife crime were there, including Martin and Tara Cosser, the parents of Charlie Cosser, a 17-year-old who was stabbed at an end-of-term party nearly two years ago in Warnham, West Sussex.
'You are inspirational,' the Prime Minister told the campaigners.
'I find it really humbling that people that you have been through some of the most horrendous ordeals are able then somehow to turn that around and channel it into work to help other people that they will probably never meet and never know.
'I often ask myself, because we've got a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, I often ask myself, how would I react? And I'm not sure I would have the courage and resilience that you have to do what you do for other people.'
Sir Keir also lauded Elba's 'brilliant' campaign against knife crime, called Don't Stop Your Future.
Meanwhile, the Luther star said there had been some 'milestones' in knife crime campaigning, but added 'we can't take our foot off the pedal'.
The 52-year-old said: 'We've seen some things happen, and that's great.
'There's also been a small rise in knife crime at the same time, OK?
'And compared to the year before that rising knife crime might be less than the year before, but it was still a rise.
'So we can't take our foot off the pedal.
'We have to stay focused.'

It is not yet known whether the Taliban is in possession of the database. It includes names of Afghans as well as the names of their individual UK sponsors including SAS and MI6 spies and at least one Royal Marine Major General. The epic MoD blunder was kept Top Secret for almost three years by a legal super injunction. And the government is still battling the courts to keep details behind the Afghan data leak secret. Thousands of the refugees had to be secretly relocated to the UK and it is set to cost Britain up to £7 billion. A total of 18,714 Afghans were included on the secret list, many of whom arrived via unmarked planes which landed at Stansted airport. Many of the Afghans who were flown into the country as part of Operation Rubific were initially housed at MoD homes or hotels until permanent accommodation was found. Only around 10 to 15 per cent of the individuals on the list would have qualified for relocation under the emergency Afghan Relocation and Assistance Programme, known as ARAP, opened as Kabul fell to the Taliban. But the leak means many more now have a valid claim for assistance and relocation.

A thug suffered instant karma when he started a fight with a motorist, who turned out to be an experienced Muay Thai boxer. The man squared up to Peerapat Ngamsilapakorn, who he nearly grazed while allegedly speeding without headlights on in Bangkok last Friday. Peerapat's terrified girlfriend tried to diffuse tensions as the aggressive man walked up to Peerapat and began insulting him. Footage shows the thug throwing the first blow at Peerapat, which he blocked with an arm and backed away, before unleashing a flurry of punches at his opponent and knocking him to the ground within seconds. An enraged Peerapat kicked him several times and put him in a headlock before passers-by intervened. He then lodged a complaint with the Sai Mai Police Station. A police spokesman said: 'The complainant said he was heading to the convenience store and had his turn signal on, but the other man on the motorcycle came without headlights and nearly hit him. 'As seen in the clip, the attacker walked over, started cursing, and threw the first punch. The complainant said he retaliated in self-defence.' Peerapat said his opponent allegedly threatened him not to press charges, and challenged him to a rematch despite being wiped out. He said: 'I am a very calm person and never pick a fight with anyone. However, when you were being bold and loud to me, how can I yield? Everyone taught me not to concede easily. 'I talked with him politely but he refused to listen. I told him to leave, but he refused to go. 'I could have attacked him first, but it would not have been fair because I know Muay Thai so I let him throw the first punch. 'After that, it happened as is seen in the video. He talked too much and learned a hard lesson.' Peerapat said that police were tracking down the thug to be questioned over the road rage incident. Peerapat said his opponent allegedly threatened him not to press charges, and challenged him to a rematch despite being wiped out It comes after a Muay Thai instructor used his martial arts skills earlier this month to restrain pitbulls after they brutally attacked him earlier this month. Ernesto Chaves was on a morning run in Ponta Pora, west of Sao Paulo, Brazil, when two dangerous dogs attacked him. Using his martial arts skills, the 33-year-old managed to dramatically pin the animals down before he was taken to hospital with multiple injuries, including a bite to the leg and a broken finger. Muay Thai is a martial art that allows fighters to use their feet, fists, shins and elbows, and it is considered to be the national sport of Thailand.

Notting Hill Carnival not the cause of knife crime, event boss says
Notting Hill Carnival is not the cause of knife crime, said the festival's chief executive, as he announced greater safety measures ahead of this year's event. Matthew Phillip told the crowd at the festival's launch party on Thursday that money raised from the local council and the mayor of London would be put towards security measures at the event, which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend. The carnival has also partnered with actor Idris Elba's Hope Foundation and its campaign Don't Stop Your Future (DSYF) to combat knife and violent crime in London communities. Mr Phillip urged people not to scapegoat the carnival, which has faced criticism in recent years for not tackling violent crime, including the murders of two people last year – Cher Maximen, who was killed in front of her three-year-old daughter, and chef Mussie Imnetu. Takayo Nembhard, 21, was stabbed in 2022. Mr Phillip said: 'Knife crime is not a carnival issue. Youth violence is not a carnival issue. 'These are serious national issues, and while some statistics have improved, the roots remain poverty, isolation, racial inequality, disconnection and the absence of hope, especially for young people. 'Carnival does not cause these problems. It doesn't create violence. In fact, for many, it offers relief from it.' Concerns over safety at the carnival have also contributed to insecurity about its future, and the festival's organisers wrote to the Government earlier this year to ask for urgent funding. Carnival chairman Ian Comfort requested more funding from the Government to steward the event and address safety concerns, amid ongoing warnings from police that there could be a tragedy. Eventually City Hall, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea council and Westminster city council provided money, allowing this year's event to take place. Mr Phillip said: 'What began as a small gathering of courage on the streets of Notting Hill has grown into one of the largest cultural events in the world. 'That growth brings joy, but it also brings a huge responsibility. Each year, over a million people walk through these streets. 'We are strengthening every element of our operational infrastructure: more trained stewards, expanded CCTV coverage and parade co-ordination, faster response systems for stewards and safety teams, and expanded crowd management infrastructure and personnel, to give an example of a few of the initiatives we're embarking on. 'These are not tick boxes. They're a real commitment to care, to precision and to the protection of the community.' The carnival will run from August 23 to 25 and features parades, steelpan costumes, bands, sound systems and stages.
