Why The Substance should win the best picture Oscar

The Guardian25-02-2025
Thinking about it, I wasn't sure which image disturbed me more: the one where an eyeball begets another eyeball and the two of them start jostling for prominence in the same socket hole?; or the one where one eyeball begets four other eyeballs and they, you know, start slamming into each other?
On reflection, it's the first that's worse. As terrifying as the second may be, in a moment that sets off The Substance's super gross-out denouement, it is at least expected. Also, with four eyes (actually it could be six, or eight, it all happens so quickly) you can feel the body horror being ratcheted up to levels of preposterousness that take the edge off. The first instance, by contrast, is simple and pure; it jabs its fingers into your stomach and squeezes away until it takes physical effort to stop yourself from gagging.
So, that's that. Ranked. And a little something I wanted to get out of the way before going further into why Coralie Fargeat's story of a middle-aged woman who will do anything to get a pert butt should win this year's best picture award.
At least that's one way of interpreting the plot of this film. Another is that Demi Moore's Elisabeth Sparkle, the former Hollywood star turned Jane Fonda-esque dancercise queen, accepts an invitation to try a mysterious new treatment because she wants to prolong her career. Or, maybe, she is not sure what she wants at all and tries the substance just to do 'something'. In many reviews of the movie this lack of clarity has been pinned down as a weak spot. If The Substance is an allegory, what is it an allegory of, exactly? But liberating yourself from the quest for intentional meaning, I found, only made The Substance more compelling.
I knew about The Substance many months before I watched it, because the chatter around it found its way into my social feeds. This is not common for me, largely because my social media diet of football analysis and political journalists means nothing original ever comes my way. But here it was, a movie that had not only had a clear visceral impact on its audience, but also led them to ponder on its meaning.
Personally, I'm interested in the angle that says The Substance is a critique on consumer capitalism; the idea that a product can resolve the internal anguish that exists in all of us (or at least encourage it to form a homunculus that bursts from your spine). But I'm even more interested in a film that allows for such speculation at all. Fargeat said she wanted to 'explode the idea of beauty. To show the reality of who we really are and what we're made of', and that allows for a broader reflection on the human condition.
The visual language helps this process along. From the opening shot of a cracked egg giving birth to a more perfect cracked egg, provocative images are contrived consistently and stick in your brain. The lifesize photo of Elisabeth in her exercise gear, hung in the heart of her apartment like a cross between a religious icon and a hunting trophy. Meanwhile, outside gazing in, an even bigger billboard tribute to Elisabeth's more perfect alter ego, Sue, bought and paid for by corporate America. The font and the legend of The Substance itself ('You stabilise every day') that comes over half-health supplement, half-chemical weapon. The corridor of red, patterned linoleum that is just demanding a torrent of blood be unleashed across it. The various pustules of differing colours. The breast in the middle of the face.
I can't think of many other movies I've watched recently that have so many memorable images. I can't think of one that's been so gleefully gory or in such bad taste. The former is a better argument for giving The Substance an Oscar, but the second would work too at a push: good art that is in bad taste? There are not many films like that on at the multiplex, and even less likely on a streamer.
We can go on. The Substance has Moore giving a career-defining performance and Margaret Qualley an internet-breaking one. It has the impetus of history behind it, with the chance to become the first horror movie to win best picture (some people say that was The Silence of the Lambs, I would say no, that was a police procedural). It's also a movie for movie lovers, from The Shining references to the Lynchian distortion of physical space, and one that once again encourages the viewer to think: what does this remind me of? (I was transported back to the 90s, and Peter Jackson's Bad Taste on VHS).
There are umpteen reasons to recommend this film for Hollywood's most important bauble, and it's possible to do so wholeheartedly thanks to the knowledge that, in reality, The Substance has no chance of winning at all. It's a trashy horror film that makes you want to puke, for God's sake, and – get this – it's even made by a woman! Still, it's the Academy's loss. The Substance will probably continue unaffected: bouncing around our various screens and inside our heads, pulling us up short. This meme of a movie has a life of its own.

Demi Moore fans are shocked to learn her REAL name... and how she grew up in a UFO town

Demi Moore is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, especially now after her comeback that led to an Oscar nomination with her outstanding performance in The Substance. But the siren's image was not always so slick. The St Elmo's Fire actress was born with a very different name that did not quite have a ring to it: Demi Gene Guynes. Her last name changed to Moore after marrying musician Freddy Moore in 1979. And the Landman actress grew up far from the klieg lights of the movie industry: her hometown is Roswell, New Mexico, a city in the southeastern part of the state, known primarily for the alleged 1947 UFO incident. Earlier this year Demi told fans how to say her first name properly: Moore confirmed that she pronounces her name as 'Duh-mee' because it ' works better' with her last name. Her name has an interesting background. Her biological father, Air Force airman Charles Foster Harmon Sr., left her mother, who was only 18-years-old at the time, before Demi's birth. When Moore was three months old, her mother married Dan Guynes, a newspaper advertising salesman who often switched up his jobs; as a result, the family moved many times. Moore learned that Guynes was not her real father at age 13, when she discovered a marriage certificate and inquired about the circumstances since she 'saw my parents were married in February 1963. I was born in '62.' Moore said in 1991, 'My dad is Dan Guynes. He raised me. There is a man who would be considered my biological father who I don't really have a relationship with.' Her biological father Harmon died in 1997 from liver cancer in Texas. Demi and her mother shared plenty of drama: they became estranged in 1989, but reconciled shortly before Guynes death in 1998. When Demi was 14 she and her mom moved to West Hollywood, where she started modeling and taking acting classes. In 1979, three months before her 17th birthday, Moore wed Moore, and they divorced in 1985. That is how she became Demi Moore. Her career took off at a young age. Her first film was Choices (1981), then Parasite (1982), and next she was in the soap opera General Hospital. Following that came her famous Brat Pack phase. Moore recently said she felt 'a little terrified' when she was cast in General Hospital. The actress joined the cast of the hit soap opera in 1981, and the role proved to be a real turning point in her career. The Hollywood star told People: 'I think the first big moment that kind of gave me a little bit of encouragement of, wow, this could be possible, is when I got 'General Hospital' because it was a real job on a show that was successful for a soap opera. 'In fact, it was at a heightened state because Elizabeth Taylor had just been a guest on a soap opera.' Demi quickly became convinced that she had a long-term future in the entertainment industry. Demi - who became the world's highest-paid actress in the 90s - recalled: 'Literally, it was a month before my 19th birthday. And so it was like a real job where I was going to be paid and have an actual salary. Meaning that I didn't have to have another job. I could actually live by doing this thing that I loved and hoped I could do. So that was like the first moment to really kick it off.' Despite this, Demi still felt anxious about joining the cast of the hit TV show. Looking at a photo from a publicity shoot for General Hospital, Demi said: 'I got General Hospital a month before my 19th birthday, so I think I'm 19 years old. Super dolled up, heavy duty made up. 'You know, I just was so excited for all of it. But if I'm looking at this photo, I think I was probably a little terrified also.' In December, Demi revealed that she feels more 'liberated' than ever in her career. The actress has been working in Hollywood for decades, and Demi has now reached a place of 'radical acceptance' in her life. The movie star - who was married to Bruce Willis between 1987 and 2000 - told 'Extra': 'I think it's the most liberated that I feel. The place is of greater, or I would say, of radical acceptance.'

I'm a horror expert - these are the 7 best films of 2025 so far

2024 was a huge year for horror, but 2025 looks to be bigger and better than ever. Last year we were captivated by Longlegs' terrifying marketing campaign, marvelled at the power of indie horror with Late Night With The Devil, and simply shocked by The Substance sweeping awards ceremonies. Immaculate, Strange Darling, I Saw The TV Glow, and In A Violent Nature all graced top films of the year lists across the world – and that's just a handful of genre titles that made an impact. It's a tough act to follow, but this year, we have already witnessed some of the best horror has to offer, with chilling reboots, long-awaited sequels, and original titles that have had us in a chokehold. And we're only halfway through 2025 – there are still tonnes of chilling releases left to sink our teeth into. As an avid fan of horror – from gateway flicks to extreme gems – it's been one of the most exciting years of cinema in a while, but it can also become a daunting task trying to wade through the recommendations. So I have compiled a list of 7 of the best horror films of 2025 you need to make sure you watch before the New Year and a fresh slate of exciting releases arrive. Sweet screams. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Nosferatu kicked off the 2025 horror calendar in a sumptuous gothic fashion, offering a fresh twist on F. W. Murnau's iconic vampire flick. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, Robert Eggers' film follows estate agent Thomas Hutter (Hoult) as he travels to Transylvania to facilitate the sale of a home in his small German village. He meets with the prospective client, Count Orlok (Skarsgard), but is soon plagued by nightmarish visions and encounters an evil force far beyond his comprehension – and it's coming for his wife, Ellen (Depp). With a palpable sense of dread from the first scene, Eggers injects his signature dark and ominous flare into the classic tale, evident from his work on The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. Bolstered by incredible performances from its ensemble cast, Nosferatu set the bar mighty high for horror in the next 12 months. Where to watch: Available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV Plus, and Rakuten TV To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video If there's a body horror-shaped hole in your life left by 2024 hit The Substance, The Ugly Stepsister is here to fill that gap. The feature debut from Emilie Blichfeldt is as thought-provoking as it is stomach-churning, offering a visceral exploration of female beauty standards via a warped retelling of Cinderella. Elvira (Lea Myren) is obsessed with winning the heart of Prince Julian (Isac Calmroth) and will stop at nothing to do so, even if it means subjecting herself to painful cosmetic procedures closer to medieval torture methods. When it appears that her beautiful stepsister Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Naess) is about to receive what she believes is fated to her, Elvira resorts to drastic – and gruesome – methods to make sure that doesn't happen. Blichfeldt strikes a unique balance of pitch black comedy while remaining sympathetic towards her characters, but have your bucket at the ready, some seriously gross-out scenes in The Ugly Stepsister make The Substance look like a children's film. Where to watch: Shudder To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Ryan Coogler's genre cinema debut was nothing short of a masterpiece. Sinners stars Michael B Jordan in the twin roles of Smoke and Stack, offering a performance so captivating it's easy to forget it is one actor playing both characters. The action-packed, blood-soaked flick follows the duo as they set up their own blues bar in their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi, enlisting loved ones far and wide to help get the 'juke joint' up and running the very day they arrive back in town. Offering food, drinks, and live music, the party is well and truly popping just a short while after opening, but the night soon devolves into chaos when a group of strangers turns up and attempts to gain entry. Effortlessly stylish, action-packed, and surprisingly sexy, Sinners is an experience from start to finish that will have you laughing, crying, and dancing along to the impeccable soundtrack. Where to watch: Available to buy on Prime Video, Apple TV Plus, and Rakuten TV To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Outside of big screen releases, 2025 has gifted us with some truly incredible indie gems. Yuta Shimotsu's feature debut Best Wishes To All is one such title, a thoroughly unsettling, atmospheric film reminiscent of the J-horror era. It follows an unnamed nursing student (Kotone Furukawa) who visits her grandparents (Masashi Arifuku and Yoshiko Inuyama) in their rural Japanese town. She appears distressed to learn that her parents' arrival at the home is delayed, leaving her alone with her elderly relatives. As the visit winds on, the young woman uncovers dark secrets that seem to point to a mysterious presence lurking in the house. Packed full of surreal and deeply disturbing imagery, Best Wishes To All is a remarkable directorial effort from Shimotsu that cements his name as one to be watched. It explores what we are willing to ignore in a bid to live a carefree life, and there are few things more terrifying and relatable than that. Where to watch: Shudder To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Would you rather be trapped with a shark or a serial killer? Strangely, a release we had this year asked exactly this. Directed by The Loved Ones and The Devil's Candy creator Sean Byrne, Dangerous Animals introduces genre fans to charismatic villain Tucker (Jai Courtney), a serial killer who uses sharks as his weapon of choice. His latest potential victim is Zephyr (Hassie Harrison), who Tucker kidnaps and imprisons on his boat – but she won't go down without a fight. Byrne maintains tension throughout by making the most of the film's limited location, with much of the cat-and-mouse action taking place on Tucker's boat. It's hard not to be intrigued by his charismatic yet deadly persona, and the strong characterisations that invest the audience in their journey are crucial to help this outlandish concept land. What's more, there are buckets of blood and violence aplenty that help Dangerous Animals sit among its sharksploitation and ozsploitation peers comfortably. Where to watch: Not yet available to stream To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It's been 18 long years of waiting, but the eagerly anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later finally arrived in cinemas last month. 28 Years Later is set almost 30 years after the events of the first film (as the title would suggest), in which a group of survivors have found ways to live among the infected. Spike (Alfie Williams) and his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) venture off the island so the teenager can experience his first kill and learn more about how the world outside of their commune works. When Spike discovers something on the mainland that turns his world upside down, he ventures there with his sickly mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), in a bid to find a miracle cure for her mystery ailment. 28 Years Later boasts grisly kills, balls-to-the-wall action sequences, hair-raising chase sequences, and surprisingly heartfelt moments that will have audiences in tears. It is a British horror film through and through, encapsulating everything from the Covid pandemic to nostalgia culture in a way that is sure to be looked back on for generations to come to examine the landscape in which it was released. What's more, it offers a strangely hopeful twist to the standard zombie narrative that so often focuses on the evils of humanity, instead shining a light on the goodness of our being, which continues to shine in hardship. Where to watch: In cinemas now To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Last, but certainly not least, Danny and Michael Philippou have stunned once more with a crushing exploration of grief which will crawl under your skin and ruminate for days. After making a name for themselves in genre cinema with the release of Talk To Me in 2023, Bring Her Back cements their status as the most exciting directors in modern horror. Bring Her Back follows siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are set to be separated in the foster care system following the death of their father. Andy, desperate to care for his sister, begs for them to be kept together, and they go to live with foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) and her adopted son Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) in their remote home. But when Laura's behaviour towards Andy becomes increasingly hostile, he uncovers a terrifying ritual Laura is attempting to recreate. More Trending Like Talk To Me before it, Bring Her Back is a heartbreaking examination of grief from the perspective of teenagers as well as a mother. Every member of the cast delivers career-defining performances, particularly Paddington star Hawkins, whose devastation in the face of her daughter Cathy's death leads her to extreme lengths. It is both sympathetic to its subject matter without scrimping on the scares, featuring some of the most disturbing scenes cinema in 2025 has to offer. Where to watch: In cinemas from July 26 . What to know about Bruce Willis' frontotemporal dementia diagnosis

Bruce Willis' family first revealed he was battling 'health issues' in 2022, before later revealing that the actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. Subsequently, relatives of the 70-year-old Die Hard actor announced he would be 'stepping away' from his career and have since been offering updates on his condition as it develops. They first announced the specifics of his condition in an Instagram post shared by his daughter, Rumer Willis, in 2023. Rumer – who the star shares with his former partner, actress Demi Moore – penned a message explaining: 'Our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce's original diagnosis. 'In the spirit of that, we wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing. 'Since we announced Bruce's diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce's condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). 'Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.' Since this initial announcement, Bruce's family has shared regular updates about the actor, often thanking fans for their support. His wife, Emma Heming Willis, also shared in 2024 that she is writing a book about their family's experience with Bruce's disease. The book is scheduled to be released on September 9, 2025. Frontotemporal dementia, aka FTD, is a less common form of dementia usually diagnosed in people aged 45-65, whereas dementia mostly affects people over 65. The degenerative disease primarily affects communication and behaviour, as opposed to memory, like other types of dementia. According to the NHS, signs of frontotemporal dementia can include: Personality and behaviour changes – acting inappropriately or impulsively, appearing selfish or unsympathetic, neglecting personal hygiene, overeating, or loss of motivation language problems – speaking slowly, struggling to make the right sounds when saying a word, getting words in the wrong order, or using words incorrectly problems with mental abilities – getting distracted easily, struggling with planning and organisation memory problems – these only tend to occur later on, unlike more common forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease There may also be physical problems, such as slow or stiff movements, loss of bladder or bowel control (usually not until later on), muscle weakness or difficulty swallowing. Emma and Bruce have been married since 2009 and share daughters Mabel Ray Willis, 13, and Evelyn Penn Willis, 11. Bruce also shares three daughters with his ex-wife Demi Moore, with whom he was married from 1987 to 2000: daughters Rumer Glenn Willis, 36, Scout LaRue Willis, 34, and Tallulah Belle Willis, 31. Giving an update on her husband's health to NBC's Today programme, she explained: 'I think it was the blessing and the curse, to sort of finally understand what was happening, so that I can be into the acceptance of what is.' Asked if her husband knows what is going on and if his condition is something he is aware of, she said: 'Hard to know, it's hard to know.' october 2024 Emma reveals first signs of condition In an interview with Town & Country, Bruce's wife, Emma Heming Willis, revealed that Bruce's symptoms first began as language changes, which initially didn't cause alarm as he had a childhood stutter. 'As his language started changing, it (seemed like it) was just a part of a stutter, it was just Bruce. Never in a million years would I think it would be a form of dementia for someone so young,' she said. 'To hug you and ask you about life and your stories and struggles and successes.' Rumer continued: 'I know you wouldn't want me to be sad today so I'll try to just be grateful reminding myself how lucky I am that you're my dad.' june 23 2025 Tallulah Willis faces backlash for sharing photos of her dad Bruce's daughter Tallulah Willis spoke out after some social media users responded negatively to the 31-year-old sharing a photo of her dad. 'As a family we use our discretion when posting,' she wrote back to a fan who shared criticism under the June 23 post. 'Today was a great day filled with smiles. I made the judgement call to show that to the world, because I know what he means to everyone.' july 2025 Outlets report unverified claims Bruce can no longer speak or walk Rumours began to circulate online this month that Willis' condition has progressed to the point he can no longer speak or walk. This information has never been directly verified by his family or any other official source. While the specifics of the way Bruce's condition has progressed remain unknown, it's clear that he has plenty of support from both his family and his legion of devoted fans.
