Haathi Park runs into jumbo hurdles: Crumbling infra, poor upkeep & neglect

Time of India5 days ago
Lucknow: Once a vibrant public space and weekend destination for families, the famous Haathi Park in the Old City is now a picture of neglect. Crumbling infrastructure, broken play equipment, and a complete absence of maintenance have left the park in a dilapidated state, paving the way for drug addicts and criminal elements to take over the premises after dark.
Located strategically between the Daliganj railway and road bridges on MG Road, the park was once famed for its concrete elephant structure with internal stairs that children could climb. Now, it stands vandalised and misused, with its trunk and mouth reportedly being used to stash drugs.
Mohan Singh, a shopkeeper in the locality, said: "The swings are broken, the lights don't work, and there's no one to guard the area.
Criminals and addicts start gathering here every evening. What used to be a safe space for kids is now a spot we avoid after sunset."
Discarded syringes, empty liquor bottles and tablet wrappers litter the park's corners. Despite repeated complaints, there was no response from the Lucknow Municipal Corporation or the police.
Meera Yadav, a Daliganj resident, said: "It's as if the authorities have abandoned this place."

"In the 1990s and early 2000s, Haathi Park and the adjacent Buddha Park were among Lucknow's most popular public spaces. With a nominal Rs 5 entry fee, they attracted hundreds daily and were part of every Lucknowite's childhood. While Buddha Park was renovated, Haathi Park was left to decay. It deserves the same attention," said Abdul Rauf, 68, a retired govt teacher from Chowk.
Residents are now demanding that the LMC steps in to restore the park, with proper lighting, round-the-clock security and basic upkeep.

Who is Nicole Mitchell? Minnesota state senator found guilty of burglary; Democrats call for her resignation

A jury in northern Minnesota on Friday found state senator Nicole Mitchell guilty of felony burglary and possession of burglary tools, reports New York Times. The issue has the future of her political career and her party's majority in serious doubt. Nicole Mitchell is a Democrat representing a suburban district near Minneapolis and St Paul. She was found guilty on Friday after a jury trial in northern Minnesota. Mitchell was arrested in April 2024 after police responded to a reported break-in at her stepmother's home in Becker County. Officers discovered her dressed in black in the basement, holding a flashlight that had a sock pulled over it. Mitchell admitted to entering the home without permission. Bodycam footage captured her saying, 'I have never done anything like this.' She told officers she had gone into the house to retrieve sentimental items belonging to her late father, including a flannel shirt, after her stepmother had cut off communication. "I just wanted to get a couple of my dad's mementos" and "I know I did something bad," she said during the encounter, which prosecutors used to support their case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Cup Of This (Before Bed) Can Melt Fat Like Never Before The Healthy Way Learn More Undo She was charged with first-degree burglary and possession of tools commonly used for theft, crimes that carry prison sentences of up to 20 and three years respectively. Following the verdict, Mitchell was not taken into custody, and no sentencing date has yet been scheduled. She left court without addressing the media. How the arrest of Mitchell could affect Minnesota The conviction could affect politics in Minnesota. Right now, Democrats have just a one-seat lead in the state Senate. If Mitchell quits or is removed, the Senate would be split evenly until a new election is held. Republican Senate Leader Mark Johnson said, 'If she is unwilling to resign, she must be expelled as soon as possible to protect the integrity of the Senate.' Democratic leader Erin Murphy also said she expected Mitchell to step down. Minnesota law doesn't automatically stop convicted felons from holding office unless they are in jail. The state constitution says lawmakers must be "qualified voters," and people in prison can't vote. Legal experts say it's not clear if this rule applies for the whole time someone is in office or just when they're elected. Mitchell was elected in 2022 with a big win and represents a strong Democratic district. She used to be a TV weather reporter, served in the Air National Guard, and is also a trained lawyer.

Fake currency worth Rs 9 crore recovered in West Bengal's Dhamakhali

KOLKATA: Fake notes worth Rs nine crore have been recovered from Dhamakhali ferry ghat under Sandeshkhali police station in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. Two persons, namely Sirajuddin Mollah and Debabrata Chakraborty have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said on Saturday. The two arrested persons had checked into the Royal Guest House near Dhamakhali ferry ghat on Friday night. When buying goods at a local shop, the shopkeeper suspected that the notes were fake after seeing them. He immediately informed the police. Then the police came and detained the two persons. Later, they were arrested. Some original Indian currency and Nepalese currency were recovered from these two persons. A machine capable of punching large amounts of money was also found in their possession. Additionally, two Aadhaar cards have been recovered from Sirajuddin. The arrested are being interrogated, with the investigators trying to figure out the reason behind their stay at the Royal Guest House, whether they were planning to meet anyone in Dhamakhali, and what was their intended use of the extra Aadhaar cards. Efforts are being made to find if others are involved in this fake currency racket. Dhamakhali is a strategic location from where one can go to Kolkata, via Basanti highway, or to Bangladesh, through a river. Therefore, it is being investigated whether the arrested people had a plan to escape to Bangladesh.
