Walmart boycott 2.0: What does it mean for shoppers?

Hindustan Times22-05-2025
Walmart is facing yet another boycott after March's economic blackout. A boycott of Walmart from May 20 to May 26 was announced by the advocacy group People's Union USA, which accused Walmart of 'crushing small businesses' and 'underpaying' its employees.
Both in-store and online shopping at Walmart locations are included in the boycott. Affiliated Walmart-branded companies like Sam's Club, as well as private label brands such as Great Value and Equate, are also facing the boycott.
John Schwarz, the founder of The People's Union, has led several boycott campaigns against major corporations in the past. He urged shoppers to avoid Walmart in a May 20 post on social media, saying, 'After all the record profits, all the tax loopholes, all the corporate greed, Walmart now once again wants to raise prices. But this time, because of the tariffs—as if they can't absorb the cost. As if you and I should carry this burden.'
Responding to previous boycott efforts in April, Walmart said in a statement, according to USA Today, 'As one of the largest corporate taxpayers in the country, not only do we pay our fair share, we are an economic force multiplier strengthening communities nationwide through job creation, supplier growth, and over $1.7 billion in donations last year.'
The ongoing Walmart boycott is actually part of a wider series of weekly protests organized by The People's Union. Target is one of the upcoming corporates, with a boycott having been planned from June 3 to 9. A McDonald's boycott will run from June 24 to 30. The group has reportedly also planned a nationwide consumer blackout on July 4.
Back in March, Schwarz and the People's Union organized a week-long 'economic blackout.' At the time, they urged consumers to avoid making purchases from Amazon's main site, and also other companies it owns, such as Amazon Alexa, IMDb, Prime Video, Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods, and Zappos.

Trump Tariff Effect: Instagram User Shows Sharp Spike In Walmart Pricing

An Instagram user, Mercedes Chandler, recently shared a video from a Walmart store in the United States asserting how US President Donald Trump's tariffs are directly causing a sharp spike in prices across clothes and other items. The post captioned, "Donald Trump's tariffs are in full swing!" shows Chandler walking across clothing sections comparing old price tags with new ones. The older tags had been either removed or covered up and new higher prices added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mercedes Chandler (@campcallout) "Guys, the tariffs are in active effect," Chandler says, adding, "Look at these clothes in Walmart. All the tags have these bottom pieces ripped off, but then you find one with the bottom still on - $10.98. The price is raised to $11.98." Showing a children's outfit originally priced at $6.98, hiked up to $10.98, and a backpack originally sold for $19.97 now priced at $24.97, Chandler points out "That's a $4 increase". "If you don't believe me, go to your local, whether it be Walmart or Target and check this out for yourself," they said in the video. Users on Instagram have reacted to the video in different ways. Some were confused, a few criticised the tariffs and others responded sarcastically. "Was it worth it? Are we great yet?", one user commented, taking a slight at Trump's MAGA philosophy. Another said, "Remember when Trump freaked out when Amazon put the tariff charges when you check out? Retail stores should put that in their receipt." A Target employee commented, "...We also are taking the perforated price tags off the clothing starting a few days ago". Another user, supporting the tariffs said, "Wow we get billions and billions from the tariffs and in return we have to pay an extra dollar for a shirt OH NOOOOO the world is coming to an end". Since Trump assumed office in January, he has threatened to impose the main cornerstone of his campaign - tariffs on other countries. He has repeatedly argued that tariffs boost American manufacturing and protect jobs. Now, companies that bring in foreign goods into the US have to pay tax to the government. In return, American buyers will have to pay more for the imports. On Wednesday, Trump escalated his tariff offensive against India by slapping an additional 25 percent duty and subsequently doubling it to 50 percent on Indian goods over New Delhi's continuous imports of Russian oil.

Trump tariffs impact? Viral Instagram video shows hike in clothing prices at Walmart

Mercedes Chandler, an Instagram user, has recently shared a video from inside a Walmart store in the United States, claiming that President Donald Trump's tariffs, which came into effect on 1 August, 2025 are directly causing price hikes across clothing sections and other items. In the video, which has now gone viral, Chandler walks through Walmart and shows price tags on clothes and other items with original, lower prices removed or covered up and new, higher prices marked. The video is captioned 'Donald Trump's tariffs are in full swing!" by the user who points to various products, including clothes of children and a backpack. 'Guys, the tariffs are in active effect," Chandler says. 'Look at these clothes in Walmart. All the tags have these bottom pieces ripped off, but then you find one with the bottom still on – $10.98. The price is raised to $11.98.' they said. 'This is the effect of Donald Trump's tariffs." Chandler continues, showing an outfit from the children's section marked up from $6.98 to $10.98, and a backpack that previously sold for $19.97, now priced at $24.97.' 'That is a $4 increase," Chandler points out, adding that many price tags have been covered with white stickers to hide the original price. 'If you don't believe me, go to your local, whether it be Walmart or Target and check this out for yourself," Chandler says in conclusion. Netizens flooded the comment section of the post with a wave of different reactions. While most of the users criticized this change, some comments also took a sarcastic turn. One user commented: 'Was it worth it? Are we great yet?" Another added sarcastically, 'Wasn't China supposed to pay those tariffs?" A supermarket employee shared their first hand experience of altering tags, 'When i am assigned to rip prices off of clothes I purposely leave a few price tags on so y'all can see the difference.' One user also said, 'So many clothes are coming from India and other countries and he raised tariffs to 50% so we have to suffer.' After Donald Trump assumed office in the White House, he reintroduced tariffs on a wide range of imports, arguing that these tariffs will make foreign goods more expensive which will give a competitive edge to American manufacturers. Within the last few weeks, Trump has imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on all Indian goods, bringing the total to 50 per cent. China also faces a 30 per cent tariff, even though it's comparatively lower than India. India's textile exports to the US stood at $35.87 billion in 2023-24. Readymade garments accounted for 41 per cent of that volume. The US is India's largest textile export market. In 2023-24, the US imported textiles worth $10.05 billion, accounting for 28 per cent of India's overall exports. Apparel makes up the largest share of the export pie, Mint reported earlier.

'Effect Of Trump's Tariffs': Instagram User Exposes Clothing Price Hikes At Walmart

Last Updated: In the video, Chandler walks through Walmart, pointing to clothing tags that appear to have their original prices removed or covered up An Instagram user has shared a video from inside a Walmart store in the US, claiming that President Donald Trump's tariffs, which came into effect on 1 August, are directly causing noticeable price increases on clothing and other everyday items. 'Guys, the tariffs are in active effect," Chandler says. 'Look at these clothes in Walmart. All the tags have these bottom pieces ripped off, but then you find one with the bottom still on — $10.98. The price is raised to $11.98." 'This is the effect of Donald Trump's tariffs." Chandler continues, showing a child's outfit marked up from $6.98 to $10.98, and a backpack that previously sold for $19.97, now priced at $24.97. 'That is a $4 increase," Chandler points out, adding that many price tags have been replaced with stickers to hide the original price. 'If you don't believe me, go to your local — whether it be Walmart or Target — and check this out for yourself," Chandler says in the video. The post has triggered a wave of reactions on the platform. One user commented: 'Well MAGA… are you winning yet?" Another added sarcastically, 'Wasn't China supposed to pay those tariffs?" A Target employee also chimed in, 'We also are taking the perforated price tags off the clothing starting a few days ago." 'I am not getting they are imposing high tarrif on china and india but their price increased. Can some one explain me?," another confused user asked. What Are Trump's Tariffs? As part of his current economic policy, President Donald Trump has reintroduced or expanded tariffs on a wide range of imports. The goal, according to Trump, is to protect American jobs, boost domestic manufacturing, and reduce the US trade deficit. Trump argued that these tariffs make foreign goods more expensive, encouraging Americans to buy locally made products. However, in practice, many retailers — including giants like Walmart and Target — pass the extra costs on to consumers, resulting in higher prices on store shelves. Economists have long debated the effectiveness of tariffs. While the Trump administration claims they protect national interests and promote growth, critics argue they lead to inflation, supply chain disruption, and higher costs for American families.
