Elton John's heartbreaking admission as he reveals he wants to 'die a natural death'

Daily Mirror24-04-2025
Elton John has made no secret of his addiction battle, and the devastating impact drugs had on his life - but it was during his darkest days that he made a heartbreaking admission
Singer Elton John has candidly confessed his desire to "die a natural death" following his harrowing struggle with addiction. The iconic Crocodile Rock singer battled addictions to "drugs, alcohol, food and sex" during his bleakest periods.
In 1990, he took the brave step of seeking help, checking into a treatment facility. In his revealing 2019 autobiography Me, Sir Elton, now aged 78, recounted the poignant letter he wrote to cocaine while undergoing treatment at the Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. He wrote: "You have been my w***e. You have kept me from any sort of spirituality and you have kept me from finding out who I really am."

His words continued with a firm rejection of his past life: "I don't want you and I to share the same grave. I want to die a natural death when I go, at peace with myself. I want to live the rest of my life being honest and facing the consequences rather than hiding behind my celebrity status."
He reflected on his long-term relationship with the drug, saying: "I feel as though, after sixteen years with you, I was dead anyway.", reports the Express.
At that time, Elton was romantically involved with Hugh Williams. The couple met in the eighties and together spiralled into drug abuse.

However, a turning point came when Hugh decided to quit their destructive lifestyle and entered rehab, which eventually inspired Elton to follow suit.
Yet, making such a life-altering choice wasn't straightforward for Elton, as he disclosed to the Daily Mail: "I went ballistic, screaming, shouting, saying the most hurtful things I could think of. Afterwards, I holed up alone in a rented house in London for two weeks, snorting cocaine and drinking whisky."
Elton eventually came to the realisation that he required assistance and, though the initial days in rehab were "tough", he managed to pick up some basic life skills like operating a washing machine and tidying up his own room—tasks he hadn't done for decades due to having staff to do them.

After a six-week stint in a treatment facility, Elton now has a strong aversion to being around anyone under the influence of drugs. He confessed: "I just leave – because, quite frankly, it's a drug that makes people act like a*******s. I wish I'd realised that 45 years ago."
Elton recently opened up about a series of health challenges that sparked concern among fans around the world. It left him contemplating his own mortality. The music icon appeared on The Graham Norton Show in February alongside singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile to promote their track, Who Believes In Angels?
Elton used the time to speak about how the songwriting process for another project unexpectedly hit home, forcing him to think about his future. He admitted that when he worked on a song called When This Whole World Is Done With Me, written by longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, he was overcome with emotion.

He said: "I get to the chorus, and I find that it's about my death, my demise. And as a 76 year old man, which I was at that time, and having children and having a husband, mortality, and you think about, 'How long have I got? How long? I hope I've got, much longer than maybe I've got.'
"And so by the time I got to the chorus and suddenly realised that I started singing it (and) I lost it for 45 minutes. It was a very, very heavy moment for me. After 45 minutes of being consoled, I was okay, but I recorded the next day... when you're singing about being washed out to sea and the end of your life, it took me by surprise."

US star raises eyebrows as he makes shock joke about popular Aussie city and drug use

Jeremy Piven was the star of the show on Monday night as he attended the Sydney premiere for his latest flick Primitive War. The Hollywood heavyweight, 60, has spent months Down Under filming the Aussie-made production and touring his stand-up comedy act across the country. But while raving about his time in Australia - and revealing his favourite spot - the American funnyman made an eyebrow raising suggestion regarding the renaming of a certain city. 'In the middle of my tour, we headed over to Perth which is the meth capital of Australia, I don't know if you know that,' Jeremy hilariously pointed out in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail. The acting icon then made a quip aimed at the US president, saying: 'And so, in the spirit of Donald Trump, I wanna rename Perth "Merth".' Cracking up with laughter, he shook his head, signalling his comment was simply tongue in cheek. Jeremy went on to list some of the highlights of his travels around Australia, even naming his favourite hangout spot in Merth, I mean Perth. 'The reality is, I went to a cigar bar called The Social Club there and it was one of the best cigar lounges I've ever been to in my life. 'Every stop that I had, whether it was the Enmore Theatre here in Sydney or going to Melbourne and playing Hamer Hall, they were some of the best times I've ever had in my life,' he revealed. 'Sold out houses... It was just incredible. I loved it.' On Monday night, Jeremy and his fellow castmates stepped out on the red carpet in Sydney to promote the upcoming film Primitive War. Based on the best-selling novel by Ethan Pettus, the sci-fi thriller is set during the Vietnam War in 1968. It follows a search-and-rescue team who are sent out into the jungle to recover a missing platoon, and instead find terrifying dinosaurs and an undercover mission that could mean the end of the world. With stunning special effects and a big-named cast, the movie was brought to life by Aussie director Luke Sparke, who Jeremy couldn't help but gush about. 'He dreamed so big! He made this indie film and he made it this larger-than-life, science fiction fantasy that looks like it's an eighty million dollar movie and he did it in his backyard.' He added: 'No one's doing that, so we need to celebrate this guy.' The adrenaline-fuelled film was shot entirely in Australia and predominantly on the Gold Coast, a place Jeremy 'did not want to leave'. 'Big lush beaches, the atmosphere is incredible, people are there living their best lives,' he said of the popular East Coast. Jeremy rose to fame as the foul-mouthed agent in satirical Hollywood dramedy Entourage. The actor played the acerbic character Ari Gold on the HBO series from 2004 to 2011, as well as appearing in the 2015 movie.

Katie Price's ex-husband Kieran Hayler apologises to Princess Andre

Katie Price's ex-husband Kieran Hayler has apologised to his former stepdaughter Princess Andre following the release of her new show. The personal trainer, 38, said he regrets his multiple affairs that ended his marriage to Katie, which had a devastating impact on Princess's childhood. Kieran and Katie were married from 2013 until their divorce in 2021, which he described as 'one of the hardest things' he has ever been through. Speaking in her new ITV2 series The Princess Diaries, the daughter of Katie and Peter Andre shed light on her mother's decline following her split from Kieran, who confessed to cheating with several different women. The 18-year-old also recalled how her mother was 'heartbroken' and suffered 'dark times', which led to her battles with drug addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and attempted suicide. Princess said: 'He was in our lives for five years, so we got really close to him, obviously we loved him, he did a lot of stuff and when they split up everything went downhill. She also admitted at one point: 'I wish I could have had a happier childhood' before saying how she saw things 'that kids should never see' after Katie and Kieran's split. Now, speaking to the Daily Mail, Kieran has admitted his 'regrets' after cheating on Katie with her former best friend Jane Pountney and their ex-nanny Nikki Brown. Kieran, who shares Jett, 12, and Bunny, 11, with Katie, said: 'It makes me feel so sad. I am as sorry as I can be to Princess witnessing us go through such a horrible separation. Leaving them was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. 'I would love to apologise and really know how she felt during that time when mine and Kate's marriage broke down. 'It's difficult isn't it but I would like to reach out. I would love to support Princess and when I have time I will sit down and watch her show. 'Whenever any marriage breaks down and one parent has to leave the house, it rocks those children's worlds, it's really sad. I went into my marriage wanting a happily ever after, no one goes into a marriage wanting it to break down and end but ultimately as much as it impacted the adults, it disrupted and affected the children. 'When I left, it wasn't that was it, end of, point blank, I always made sure I kept in touch. 'It's hard, when they're your stepchildren, naturally that bond disappears over time, you have played a massive part in their life but Princess is 18 now, life moves on and you no longer play a role in their lives anymore. 'But when I look back, I believe I was the best stepfather that I could have been to them. I was respectful to Pete, I hope that's how they see me as well.' This is also not the first difficult moment that Princess has opened up about in her new series, after she described the frightening moment she thought she was going to die during a carjacking in South Africa. In 2018, the then-10-year-old and her mother were driving with a film crew between Johannesburg to Swaziland for another reality show, My Crazy Life, when they were held at gunpoint by six men. Elsewhere in the documentary, her father Peter was also left horrified when she revealed some of the abusive messages she receives from men on social media. More Trending After digging out one example of 'disgusting' direct messaging, Princess could be seen handing Peter the phone, to which he physically recoils. 'I didn't think it was gonna be like that,' he said. 'Oh my God. 'That really has made me feel sick, like, in the pit of my stomach.' View More » Watch The Princess Diaries on ITVX. Got a story?
