When Life Gives You Tangerines controversy: IU and Park Bo Gum's hit K-drama rocked by shocking abuse claims; Netflix responds

Time of India29-05-2025
Once hailed as a gem among recent K-dramas, When Life Gives You Tangerines has now found itself at the centre of controversy. Starring IU and Park Bo Gum, the Netflix original broke global viewership records and earned praise for its storytelling and nostalgic visuals. But behind the romantic charm of Jeju Island and sweeping timelines, serious allegations have surfaced from people who were on set, which have sent shockwaves among fans of the beloved drama.
Allegations of mistreatment spark online storm
The situation began unravelling when an X user, allegedly affiliated with a prop company, claimed the production team mishandled and damaged rented retro buses and large-scale props. They described the staff as 'ignorant or irresponsible,' noting that damage was documented and claims were filed.
"Our company staff were present on set to 'facilitate' the use of the props (we were really just there to monitor them) because the production team lacked the skills to operate the retro buses or large props we rented or made for them. They damaged everything. They were either ignorant or irresponsible. Naturally, we documented the damage and filed claims later (sic)," the tweet stated.
This post quickly snowballed, prompting several background actors to share their own distressing experiences, ranging from being forced to shave their heads to being left cold and hungry during long shoots in the winter. One post even likened the treatment of extras to being 'like slaves.'
Some users also raised concerns about the crew's alleged disregard for protected or culturally significant areas during filming. According to a few posts, the production team may have caused damage to heritage sites on Jeju Island in their pursuit of visually stunning scenes.
Netflix issues official response
As backlash mounted and criticism spread across social media platforms, Netflix was eventually forced to respond. The streaming giant broke its silence with an official statement addressing the growing allegations of mistreatment and negligence on set. 'We are working closely with our Korean production partners to improve working conditions and will thoroughly review the facts to prevent similar issues in the future,' the platform said.
About When Life Gives You Tangerines
Set against the backdrop of Jeju Island, When Life Gives You Tangerines follows Ae-sun (played by IU) and Gwan-sik (played by Park Bo Gum) as their lives intertwine from the 1960s to the present.
The romance drama touched viewers worldwide with its emotional depth and period-accurate aesthetic. However, with these behind-the-scenes claims now surfacing, it remains unclear if WLGYT will go on to become a cult classic.

Jenna Ortega on her Wednesday dance going viral globally: It was unexpected

Jenna Ortega-starrer supernatural dark comedy series Wednesday released in 2022 and immediately became a global phenomenon. As the series gears up for the release of its second season, the actor exclusively tells us how the success of the show has impacted her life. Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams As much love as the show got, Jenna Ortega's special 'Wednesday dance' from season one also got viral. Ask her about that global craze and she says, 'It's an honour and it was very unexpected. Oftentimes, you make these jobs and you never know what will come of them, or if anyone will watch them. So, the reception and excitement for what we worked on and accomplished here in season one is just something that I'm very grateful for and it still surprises me.' Watch the full interview here: The global success of the Netflix show Wednesday has also come with a lot of limelight. How is she handling being under the spotlight? 'It's been a pretty tremendous impact and an unexpected one. I have just been grateful and honored. It's such a pleasure as you hope that you're able to connect with people when you do these things and maybe it matters to someone, and it does,' Jenna responds. The actor adds, 'In my personal life, yes, it's been a great change and one that takes a lot of getting accustomed to, but I also think it's good to not fully succumb to that. So, it's interesting finding the balance, but ultimately I just kind of try to not put that pressure on the show and go about my daily life the way that suits me best. It's a learning curve for sure, but it's been a great education.' Based on the character Wednesday Addams by Charles Addams, the show saw Jenna take up the titular role of a morbid and emotionally reserved child that is fascinated by the macabre, and solves a murder at her school. The series also highlights many socially relevant issues under the garb of satire. Does she see its impact in real life too? 'I'm not sure that I've seen its general impact, but for me, in my personal life, I feel like that I kind of have the same outlook or similar stances on things. I am a very sarcastic and nihilistic person too,' she responds. Jenna adds that she does see Wednesday become a part of the pop culture: 'In general audiences, it's funny seeing girls who were once very colourful and expressive, try on eyeliner for the first time or try not to smile. I've seen people at birthday parties not breaking character and being very Wednesday. So, I see it like that.'
