Pamela Ling's lawyer accuses MACC of ‘misleading' public, says she wasn't treated as mere witness

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 – The family lawyer of Datin Seri Pamela Ling has labelled recent statements by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as 'entirely false', accusing the commission of intimidation and abuse of process.
Their lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo today accused MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki of allegedly misleading the public when he claimed Ling was never a suspect and had only been called in as a witness.
'He should come clean about who ordered Pamela's arrest and inexcusable treatment, even though her role was merely that of a witness, instead of making statements which are shockingly untrue,' the lawyer claimed in a statement here.
She said the MACC had in obtained an arrest warrant for Ling from the Johor Baru Magistrate's Court dated December 2, 2024, and that she was detained on January 8, 2024, after being handed over by Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).
Ling was then transported in handcuffs from the border to the MACC's Johor Baru office, and then to Putrajaya where she was held overnight in a lockup.
She was served with a formal arrest notice under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act and later remanded for three days, during which she was interrogated and had her phone seized.
Upon release, Ling was required to post bail of RM35,000, report monthly to the MACC, and was barred from leaving the country, even when one of her children was hospitalised.
Sangeet said the MACC's treatment of Ling was not consistent with how a witness would be handled, asserting that the agency had 'hounded' her rather than merely summoning her.
She noted that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had granted leave to challenge both the arrest warrant and the travel restriction, further undermining MACC's narrative.
Sangeet described the MACC's conduct as clear harassment and called on the agency to be held accountable, stating that such actions damage the public's trust in national institutions.
MACC had launched an investigation into Ling and her husband, Thomas Hah, in May last year over suspected corruption and money laundering activities.
Despite remaining missing, the High Court last week granted leave for Ling to proceed with her judicial review challenging her arrest and a travel ban imposed by the MACC and the Immigration Director-General.

Earlier, Yusri announced that a special task force would be formed to investigate the crash. It will comprise the police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the road transport department, the Land Public Transport Agency, and other relevant bodies. 'We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible. Our investigation will be thorough and cover all aspects, including the driver's past offences, background, activities and career history,' he said. Fifteen UPSI students were killed when the bus travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, crashed into the rear of a Perodua Alza, veered off the road, and overturned along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding early yesterday morning.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The bus involved in the crash that killed 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) on the East-West Highway yesterday was not fitted with passenger seat belts, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said. He said the bus was manufactured in 2013, seven years before seat belt installation became mandatory for newly manufactured buses, Berita Harian reported. 'But in the incident that occurred on the East-West Highway, the bus was 12 years old and built in 2013, so there were no seat belts (for passengers),' he was quoted as saying after an event in George Town, Penang. The minister also acknowledged concerns over road safety and urged all parties, including transport operators, to take responsibility. 'It's not that we don't have laws or regulations. Some say there are no laws, but we do have laws mandating both the installation and use of seat belts,' he said. 'The challenge is enforcement – how do we monitor compliance at all times? I understand that everyone is worried and concerned about road safety.' Loke said the transport ministry is now studying proposals to make seatbelt use compulsory on all express buses, regardless of when they were built. The ministry is also looking at mandating speed limiters and dashboard cameras for heavy vehicles. He added that safety-related policies often faced pushback for being either too strict or too lax. However, he insisted that any new rule must be backed by industry players and the public. 'When we implement something, it must be supported by all parties, including industry players and operators. 'Don't say it's burdensome or expensive when we introduce mandatory requirements,' he said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has issued a show-cause letter to the operator of the bus involved in the accident that killed 15 university students early this morning, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the action was taken immediately after the incident as part of the government's commitment to ensure passenger safety and hold operators accountable. 'At the same time, the road transport department (JPJ) is carrying out a safety inspection and audit on the bus and the company involved under the Road Transport Act and Land Public Transport Act,' he said in a Facebook post. Loke said both agencies are working closely to determine if there was any negligence or failure to comply with safety standards by the company. The minister said further action would be taken based on the outcome of the audit and investigation. He said the government will continue strengthening road safety policies to protect road users from the risks posed by irresponsible drivers and heavy vehicles that do not comply with safety standards. Among the policies being formulated is the mandatory implementation of speed limiters for heavy vehicles, he added. This is currently under comprehensive review, including steps to eliminate any potential for tampering once enforcement begins. Earlier, the bus operator said the vehicle had been recently serviced while the driver, loaned from another company, had a clean record and was regarded as responsible. A total of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students died in the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. A total of 48 victims were involved: 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant, and a married couple along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, who were in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with. Meanwhile, UPSI's corporate communications division has released the names of those killed. They included Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21, (from Kampung Air Terjun, Jertih); Aqil Taqiudin, 21, (Kampung Gong Bayor, Besut); Anis Soffiyya Zaidi, 20, (Kampung Rahmat, Chalok, Setiu); and Nur Ainul Qistina Mat Ali, 21, (Lorong Tapah, Kampung Anak Ikan, Jertih). The others who died included Fakhrul Arif Rosdi, 20, (from Kampung Kerandang, Jertih); Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, 22, (Kampung Gong Duek, Besut); Nur Dalila Farhana Isma, 21, (Kampung Bharu Tok Dor, Jertih); Nurul Izyanti Azahar, 21, (Kampung Padang Luas, Jertih); and Nur Amni Nadiah Nik Nor Zabir, 21, (Kampung Paya Rawa, Besut). The statement also identified Mustaqim Rosde, 21, (Kampung Telaga Nibong, Jertih); Nor Ayuni Maslan, 21, (Felda Tenang, Jertih); Nurly Sahirah Azman, 23, (Kampung Gong Pasir Kerandang, Besut); and Fatin Nasrien Fadli, 22, (Kampung Kerandang, Besut) as among those who died. The post-mortems for these victims were conducted at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh. The post-mortem for two other victims were carried out at Hospital Gerik. They were Adib Hazim Halim, 21, (from Kampung Pasir Badak, Jertih); and Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22, (from Jalan Gong Maksom, Kampung Amer, Besut).
