The Great British Sewing Bee is back - but I miss Kiell Smith-Bynoe
She was dressed as a strange, trippy cloud – and it was wonderful.
Until Sewing Bee comes around, I always forget how much I love it. And Tuesday's launch show might just have been the greatest opening episode of any Sewing Bee yet – the talent more exciting than any series before it.
But I missed Kiell Smith-Bynoe, and wished he could've been part of its great return.
Sara had to skip the last series of Sewing Bee to have her second child, so Ghosts actor and fellow comedian Kiell stepped in and unexpectedly became the best thing to ever happen to the show.
Kiell's lack of presenting experience might be why he was so great.
He felt more like each contestant's mate popping over for a catch up. There was an effortlessness to him that I imagine comes from not really having a presenting hat on and just having a laugh.
The contestants clearly adored him on a personal level and it was easy to see why, when he approached them all with sincere interest and genuine appreciation of their work. All without pretending he had the slightest clue what they were doing.
At the time, he felt like such an obscure choice. Sure, spooky sitcom Ghosts is hugely popular, but he wasn't a household name like the previous Sewing Bee hosts: Pascoe, Joe Lycett, and Claudia Winkleman.
But very quickly, it became clear that Kiell fit Sewing Bee like a perfectly hand-crafted glove.
Every week, I found myself looking forward to the show more than I ever had before – genuinely counting down the days until my boyfriend and I could get cosy and watch the most content people I've ever seen create breathtaking designs with a level of humility and kindness you'd be hard-pressed to find backstage at London Fashion Week.
I hadn't even seen Kiell in anything before. He'd acted in the likes of Death in Paradise, Stath Lets Flats, Ghosts, and Lily Allen's short-lived comedy Dreamland. He'd also been a huge hit on Channel 4's Taskmaster, which pits comedians against each other in absurd challenges – but admittedly, I knew nothing about him.
Even Kiell himself had no idea why he'd been chosen to present Sewing Bee.
He wasn't afraid to address the elephant in the room either. In his first episode as a host, he joked: 'Now this challenge is judged blindly, so the judges are off to watch Ghosts on iPlayer, as Esme has no idea who I am or why I got this job.'
But judge Patrick Grant saw the potential, slid into his DMs, and it turned out to be an inspired decision.
Even on X (formerly Twitter), where compliments are few and far between, the response was overwhelmingly positive. You'd have struggled to find a single negative tweet and it seemed he'd found a home there for good.
But to clarify: I'm not a monster. I would never suggest that a woman take time off to have a baby and lose her job as a result.
I absolutely love Sara Pascoe. Every time I see or hear her, I fall even more in love with her nervous energy and obscure quick wit. She's absolutely fantastic on Sewing Bee because she's just completely herself at all times.
I've seen her stand-up too many times to count, and there's such an ease to everything she does.
Still, I do think it's a missed opportunity not to have kept Kiell on, too – the pair of them could've made the dreamiest of double acts. And one that isn't made up of the same few presenters – Rylan, Alison Hammond, Davina McCall, or AJ Odudu – currently hogging every corner of British television.
Sewing Bee is as close to perfect as television gets, but even perfection can evolve. I don't think Bake Off would work with Noel Fielding on his own. Granted, Alison Hammond's chaos gives every show she touches the Midas touch, but these gentle-competition formats thrive with a dynamic duo at the helm.
As Sewing Bee's judges, Patrick Grant and Esme Young are a criminally underrated double act whose chemistry puts Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith to shame. But with Kiell proving to be such a seamless addition to the franchise, it feels strange – almost wrong – to return to Sewing Bee without him.
Since launching in 2013, Sewing Bee has been consistently popular, but it hasn't quite captured the zeitgeist the way Bake Off or even The Great Pottery Throw Down has – and in my opinion, it's so much better than both.
It's inclusive, innovative, and packed with warmth, even if that's the last thing we need during this insufferable heatwave.
But I really believe it could break through to the next level with Kiell joining Sara. More Trending
As well as his everyman charm, he was brilliant at the off-beat comedy that interrupts the contest – something Sara also excels at. Together, they could be an unstoppable pairing, capable of transcending Sewing Bee altogether.
Regardless, one episode in and there's already a lot to be excited about the Sewing Bee, including Sara Pascoe. I'd listen to Jojo Siwa's torturous cover of Bette Davis Eyes on repeat for Caz, and Saffie's purple and yellow pleated dress in the made-to-measure was a work of art. Every single contestant feels like 'one other watch', which is unheard of.
I just wish Kiell was there too.

Countdown's Susie Dent is coming to Wrexham - here's when
She is bringing her new tour 'Word Perfect' to Wrexham's William Aston Hall on August 23. For someone whose life revolves around a true love of the English language and who is razor-sharp at deciphering the whimsies of our mother tongue, Susie Dent doesn't seem like the sort of person to be tripped up by the simple things. But she admits she has been stumped, albeit on the rare occasion. Countdown co-presenter and Queen of Dictionary Corner for more than 30 years, Susie – who will hit the road with her all-new second 26-date tour Word Perfect this summer – has many fond memories of her time on the show and recalls one particularly amusing moment. She said: 'I was doing some work on the tour the other day, and I was reminiscing about Richard Whiteley, when one of my most embarrassing moments came back to me. 'The letters had been selected, the clock had ticked down, and a contestant offered their five-letter word. I didn't quite catch what they said, so I asked them to spell it, which they duly did: D. O. I. N. G. In my head this translated to 'doi-ng' to rhyme with 'boing', so I proceeded to look it up. Until Richard saved my bacon by chipping in with 'It's do-ing Susie'.' Susie turned down the offer to join the team of Oxford University Press lexicographers who took turns in Dictionary Corner three times, but a persistent boss wouldn't let it lie. She said: 'It wasn't on my bucket list to be on TV; I'm happiest when I'm below the radar! But now I'm so grateful my audition was successful. As for my first appearance, I said as little as possible! There is a clip online of that first show, when I sat next to Rula Lenska and looked utterly frozen. 'I will be forever amazed, and grateful, that they kept me on. After about 10 years, Richard and Carol wanted a full-time lexicographer within the team, and happily I ended up alongside them as a permanent fixture.' But for someone who had no inclination to appear on TV, Susie has a very clear place in her heart for the Channel 4 tea-time words and numbers quiz and its Friday-night naughtier sibling 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown. She said: '8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown has reminded many of those people who grew up with the show of the joy of the game, and of course it's brought in the laughs to go with it. TOP STORIES TODAY 'The real beauty of Countdown is its format. Anybody who watches it can understand the rules of the game within minutes and then join in to play along – no matter what their age or ability. Even with the comedy version, people do still love to play the game. 'Many of our contestants watched the show with their parents and grandparents, and so it has that real connection with family, too. 'After 33 years I still feel the adrenaline as the clock starts to tick down. It really is one of the biggest joys of my life. My feet will stay under the table in Dictionary Corner for as long as viewers will have me!' In her new tour Word Perfect, she is looking forward to taking audiences on a 'romp through some of the joys of the English language', looking at specific words and their stories, as well as many of the quirks which make our mother tongue so brilliantly unpredictable as well as magical. Speaking about her new tour, Susie said: 'The English language will never stop surprising and delighting me: It is as wayward as it is majestic, while the dictionary is as full of magic, drama and adventure as you will find anywhere. 'I can't wait to walk down some more of its secret alleyways with the Word Perfect audiences, and to hear their own questions about our curious mother tongue! We're going to have a lot of fun. Susie's tour, which will run from August 19 through until January 24, will coincide with the launch of her next two books, Words For Life and her children's book Roots We Share: 100 Words That Bring Us Together.

Celebs Go Dating's Anna Williamson praises 'brave' Christine McGuinness amid update
Celebs Go Dating's Anna Williamson spoke to the Mirror about Christine McGuinness' involvement with the new series of the E4 show, which is set to launch later this year Anna Williamson has paid tribute to Christine McGuinness following her departure from the new series of Celebs Go Dating. She's also given an insight into how much the reality TV star will feature after quitting during its production. Christine, 37, was announced as part of the line-up for the E4 show's upcoming return in April. The cast were then understood to have jetted off to Ibiza for a trip but, days into filming, it was revealed that she had quit the show. The reality TV star, who was previously married to Paddy McGuinness, said that it was "too soon" for her to be dating in the public eye. It was later confirmed that Christine had returned for the finale of the series, which is yet to launch. Dating coach Anna, 43, has now praised former co-star Christine over her decision to leave. Speaking to the Mirror about having reunited at the finale, Anna said: "Christine is so wonderful. I've really enjoyed getting to know her. "I do believe that she is very much still part of our ... the early few episodes of this series, which is lovely. Viewers will be really keen to hear some of Christine's story which she very much shares with us in the first two episodes." Anna continued by saying that Christine then made the "brave" decision to step back from the show. She told us recently: "[Christine] made the very brave decision that perhaps, actually, now wasn't the right time for her." Further sharing her thoughts ahead of the launch, Anna said in our interview: "But yeah, she's a great lady and the door is very much open for her to return. And I believe she would like to if the circumstances are right in the future." Christine was in the line-up for the new series, which was described by Anna as "such a fun series," alongside Kerry Katona, Olivia Hawkins, Louis Russell and Jon Lee. Mark Labbett, Donna Preston and Sam Prince will feature too. Announcing her departure, Christine said in her statement that was released back in May: "I joined Celebs Go Dating with great intentions but have realised that dating on a public platform and the attention that brings is just too soon for me. They've said the door is always open for me which I'm so grateful but for now I'm returning home to my family." A spokesperson for Celebs Go Dating said at the time that the door is "always open" for her. They said: "We have loved having Christine on the show and completely respect her feelings and decision to return home and have told her that the door is always open for her in the future at the agency." Anna's comments come after she spoke to the Mirror about her approach to parenting recently. She opened up about her life whilst discussing the Great British Phone Swap. The Channel 4 show, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, saw parents temporarily swap phone habits with their children. The experiment, fronted by Anna and clinical psychologist Dr Martha Deiros Collado, explored topics such as online safety. Participants left the experience with goals for their family, such as scheduled time off their devices at home. Asked her takeaways from hosting the five-part project, she told us earlier this month: "I think the main thing is boundaries and having very healthy, open communication. Boundaries being time when you are not on your phone and I think we found that was really beneficial for all families." Anna said she doesn't support banning technology from kids though, sharing: "You need to teach your children how to navigate it." She also said: "I think as we portray in the Great British Phone Switch phones aren't a bad thing. Tech isn't a bad thing. But it's about consuming the right things on it and that's the important thing here." All five episodes of the Great British Phone Swap are available through Channel 4. Celebs Go Dating is set to return for its new series on E4 later this year.
